The Great Council of 233 AL : A Song of Ice and Fire Forum Game

450px-Marc_Simonetti_RoyalP.jpg

It is 233 years after Aegon the Conquerer landed in Westeros and united the continent under one crown. One day ago his kinsman King Maekar I has died. It is now unclear who should rule the Seven Kingdoms. Thus , the Lords of the Realm have decided to hold a Great Council. There are many candidates for the crown, and there is even the rumor one of the Blackfyres wants to peacefully partake in the process and attempt to mount the throne with words, as swords have long since failed his family.

The whole of the Seven Kingdoms will hold its breath as the council convenes. Who will hold the throne?

How to Play :

In this game you will be pretty much able to play anything and anyone. However, there are a few rules and regulations on those :
1 : To apply for House Targaryen, you need to send me a personal message and write a decent message why you should be the one to play them (Since they are naturally quite important. I do not want an inactive King.)
2 : The heirs of player houses are by default reserved by the player and thus head of the house. ( To avoid situations similar to previous games)
3 : To sign up, you need to pick 3 , no more and no less , houses that in order of wanting the play the most. I will then pick the players of those houses. If a spot becomes vacant, you can PM me or contact me on IRC if you want said spot.
I will be using the statistic system employed by BlackBishop for his previous ASOIAF games, and it is thus I will quote :

This game does not rely on rigid mechanics, but rather common sense and role play. While there are hard stats for the game, your choices through your IC and orders will bear the brunt of success or failure. Mounting an assault on the Eyrie? Good luck! Throwing your vassals into your battles while you eat lemon cakes safe in your castle? Coward I name you! Rape pillage and burn a bloody swath across Westeros? Well, don't expect an invite to my heir's wedding, you monster! The way you play the game will reflect how both players, NPCs, and orders will turn out for you.

This isn't to say that I expect OP tales of awesomness at every corner. Play the bad guy, carry your faults with pride. It makes for a great story, and a bribe here and there goes along way to rally swords to your side.

However you want to play, realism is what we are aiming for in orders, and how they turn out for you will be based on reason. Bear in mind that I am human, and make mistakes. Be that as it may, my word is final as are all updates. If you feel I overlooked a crucial detail come to me in private, (not spamming the IRC please), and I will decide if you deserve compensation in a future update.

Now then, as we aren't all strategists, some things to keep in mind; The wiki is your friend. It will be my main resource in deciding outcomes, it stands to reason it should be yours as well when forming orders. Bookmark it, keep it close. Let it be your maester to guide you through this time of peace and war.

Wiki of Ice and Fire

Military units have been broken down into specific roles to help plan and decide outcomes. Levies are lightly armoured and can move quiet, as are archers. Your spearmen are your best defense against mounted knights and cavalry. Your heavy foot can take on other infantry but your cavalry are best overall and perfect for quick strikes.

The best advice I can give you is be patient and use your head. Rome wasn't built in a day nor was it's downfall.

Orders are pm'd to me. Please try and be brief as possible, I don't have the time to sift through an entire novella of war strategy. Be concise, be specific. Give an outline of your strategy, a possible back up plan, and anything you want added for flavour; such as who your commanders are.

As far as diplomacy goes, don't expect NPC's to be mindless drones waiting on your beck and call. If you can't give them a good enough reason to lift their banner by your side, then they won't. Simple as that. In fact they might come back to bite you. Be reasonable. Money, influence, marriage, all this can make the difference between an enemy and a friend. Just look at the Targaryens and Martells. Be reasonable!

Administrative orders are an area I will still largely rely on rolls. Too many factors may impede your internal realm's progress, and it is a matter I'd rather leave to chance, both on the success, and the outcomes. You can expect everything you do to have a cost. Whether it will be worth the reward, I'll leave it to the dice. Don't expect a boom of gold over night. Your income is reflective of the most influx of gold you will see in your treasury. A cap of 30% of your income per turn is the best you can hope for. As for your income yourself, best case scenario will leave you with an increase of 10%.

Income growth is curbed at a more, hopefully, realistic level then last time around, and events such as war and winter can see both your income and population fall.

Speaking of population, peace brings growth. 0.5% per year. Banners are also replenished once a year. Be warned, lost levies in combat are struck from your population, so keep that in mind.

Some general information about characters alive at the time :

House Baratheon of the Stormlands
- Head: Lyonel Baratheon, "the Laughing Storm"
- Family: At least one daughter, and at least one son, his heir Ormund Baratheon. Wife unknown.
- Ages and Info: Lyonel is likely in his early 40s or late 30s. The evidence for this is that when he died between 239 and 245 AC his son was both old enough to rule in his own right when he inherited as well as old enough to serve as Hand of the King soon after, so he was probably in his early 20s or thereabouts at least in 245 AC, meaning he is probably a teenager at game start. Daughter's age is unknown.

House Arryn of the Vale
- Head: Jasper Arryn
- Family: Jon Arryn (son), Alys Arryn (daughter) and Ronnel Arryn (younger son) may or may not have been born yet, but probably were not far from Jon in age.
- Ages and Info: Jasper is almost certainly in his 30s. The evidence for this is that Jon, his oldest son, was born between 217 to 220 AC, meaning that he is around 15 to 18 years old at game start. Assuming Jasper had him at age 16, he would be around 30, though he was probably older (though perhaps not by much). Mid 30s is likely.

House Lannister of the Westerlands
- Head: Gerold Lannister
- Family: Dead son (Tywald), dead older brother (Tybolt), son and heir Tion Lannister, Tytos Lannister (son), Jason Lannister (son), dead first wife Alysanne Farman (no children), current wife Rohanne Webber.
- Ages and Info: Given that his two oldest sons Tywald and Tion were born between 211 and 219 AC, Gerold is at least in his early thirties at game start, but more likely in his mid-to late thirties. Tywald was probably in his 20s or close to tjat when he died (in 233 in battle), and given that Tion marries in 235 AC and dies in battle in 236 AC he is likely close to 16 years old at game start. Tytos was born in 220 AC so he is 13 years old. Jason was born in 229 AC so he is 4 years old.

House Greyjoy of the Iron Islands
- Head: Dagon Greyjoy (probably - could be a younger relative)
- Family: Unknown
- Ages and Info: Dagon led raids along the Sunset Sea around 211 AC, so presumably he was of age at that time. He could be anywhere from his mid 20s to middle age - we don't know. Odds are he was probably older than younger though - perhaps late 20s or early 30s is a good guess. He could also have died, leaving a younger relative to inherit.

House Stark of the North
- Head: Edwyle Stark
- Family: Son and heir Rickard Stark (may or may not be born yet), dead father Willam Stark, Artos Stark (uncle), Berena Stark (aunt), Alysanne Stark (aunt), Errold Stark (aunt), Rodrik Stark (uncle), Marna Locke (wife), Melantha Blackwood (mother), Jocelyn (sister), Benedict Royce (brother-in-law), Brandon (cousin, son of Artos), Benjen (cousin, son of Artos)
- Ages and Info: The family tree of the Starks at this time is very confusing with little information about ages, but luckily we know that Rickard, Edwyle's son, was born between 230 AC and 249 AC, meaning that Edwyle must be around 20 years old at least around game start. Given that his father Willam died in 226 AC and Edwyle seems to have been able to succeed him immediately, it is likely he is in his mid to late twenties at the youngest, but could be older. The ages of his family are unknown, but it is likely his aunts and uncles are approximately a decade older than him and that his cousins are of similar ages to him.

House Tyrell of the Reach
- Head: Luthor Tyrell (probably - maybe his father)
- Family: Gormon (brother), Garth (brother), Moryn (brother)
- Ages and Info: All we know of Luthor is that he was the father of Mace Tyrell, but as he was born far from the start date around 256 AC, this is of limited use - however, we do know that in 240 AC, seven years from the start date, his betrothal to Shaera Targaryen was broken and he married Olenna Redwyne instead. The fact that he was betrothed but not married suggests that he was quite young in 240 AC, possibly 16 years old or a little older, and was most likely in a regency at game start. His siblings are all younger than him, but by how much is unknown - some of them might not even have been born. It could very well be that at game start Luthor's father ruled, but we do not know of him.

House Tully of the Riverlands
- Head: Unnamed Tully lord
- Family: Celia Tully (daughter), dead father Medgar Tully, unknown wife
- Ages and Info: We know that in 211 AC a young boy of 8 years old was the successor of Medgar Tully. That means he is 20 years old at game start. Celia Tully was the daughter or a Tully lord that was engaged to marry Jaehaerys Targaryen at one point - to be the unnamed lord's daughter she would have to be 4 years old or younger at game start, making her born in 229 AC at the earliest.

House Martell of Dorne
- Head: Unnamed Martell princess (probably - or her father/mother)
- Family: Lewyn Martell (younger brother)
- Ages and Info: All we know of the ruler of Dorne at game start is that it is likely the mother of Doran Martell, Oberyn, Elia and their siblings, who was the Princess of Dorne. However, the oldest of them, Doran, was not born until 247 AC - over a decade after start date. This means that either the Princess of Dorne was ruling in her own right in 233 AC but had children over a decade later (unlikely), that she was a young child with a regent in 233 and had children when she came of age and married (plausible), or that her father/mother was ruling Dorne in 233 and she was their only daughter (also plausible). However, we know nothing of her family other than that she had a younger brother, Lewyn - though he may or may not have been born by 233 AC.

I must however thank oxfordroyale for inspiring me to do this and sending me that information.

Books. In about one or two weeks, so people with exams right about now can still participate.

(On that note, exam people will be allowed to miss turns without consequences this period. I know what you guys are going through and I wish you the best of luck.)

Lyonel Baratheon, "the Laughing Storm", Lord of Storm's End and Lord Paramount of the Stormlands

Born: 191 AC (age 40)

Born in 191 AC to Lord Axel Baratheon and his wife Lady Delia Buckler, Lyonel Baratheon is one of the greatest living warriors in the Seven Kingdoms. As a youth he developed a fondness for jousts and tourneys great and small, receiving his knighthood at the age of ten-and-six after besting men twice his age and size at the Tourney of Bronzegate. At the Tourney of Ashford Meadow two years later he broke nine lances against Ser Robert Ashford in the first tilt; they unseated each other on their tenth course only to rise again and fight together, sword against mace. Finally a battered Robert admitted defeat, and Lyonel became a champion in his place. At the same tourney he would fight many matches against lesser foes, becoming famous for his penchant of breaking into booming laughter the moment they touched his shield. If his challengers wore any sort of crest on their helm, Lyonel would strike it off and fling it into the crowd. He notably joined Ser Duncan the Tall in the trial of seven that resulted in the accidental death of Prince Baelor Targaryen.

His father succumbed to a longtime illness in 226 AC, and upon his death Lyonel ascended to the position of Lord of Storm's End and Lord Paramount of the Stormlands at the age of thirty-four. By the time he became the lord of his house he had been married for almost a decade, and his wife (now deceased) had borne him four strong, healthy children: a son, Ormund, two boys, Harbert and Gowen, and a daughter, Mya.

Lyonel is a good-natured and genial man who takes his responsibilities as a lord seriously despite his frequent indulgences of his hobbies and passions. A brave and talented warrior blessed with a powerful physique, his martial prowess is recognized by all. Nevertheless, he is notoriously quick to anger and swollen with pride, giving him a somewhat prickly reputation. He is not one to forget a slight or let anyone besmirch the honor of his house.

QJbnkBtm.jpg

Ormund Baratheon

Born: 213 AC (age 20)
Whereas his father is prideful, bombastic and larger than life, his eldest son Ormund is quite the opposite: plain, soft-spoken, loyal and exceedingly sensible. A skilled warrior in his own right, Ormund's prowess in arms is often overshadowed by his intelligence and mastery of courtly intrigue and noble diplomacy despite his relative youth. It is commonly remarked that Ormund might well have joined the Citadel had he been born a younger son to a more minor house. While Lyonel's force of personality and reputation has bolstered the influence of House Baratheon within the realm, it is Ormund who has ensured its stability as his father's right hand.

t2OTy0Gm.jpg

Harbert Baratheon

Born: 214 AC ( age 19)
A youth of nineteen, Harbert is a shy and quiet young man with a deep love of history and a keen thirst for knowledge. He is jokingly referred to as "Blacknose" by his brothers due to his habit of burying his nose in his books and smudging the ink. He is the smartest of the Baratheon children, even more so than Ormund, though his skill at both interpersonal relationships and swordsmanship are sorely lacking. His father Lyonel worries that he is too weak and constantly wishes for him to adopt more martial and masculine pursuits. As a child he was bullied mercilessly by his younger brother Edric, and has feared him ever since.

tnKbfQ4m.jpg

Edric Baratheon

Born: 215 AC (age 18)
Lyonel's youngest son the meanest of the Baratheon children with the blackest of reputations, Edric is cruel, manipulative, ambitious and vindictive. He excels at fighting - with blades and without - but is utterly without honor, finding pleasure in violence and the instigator of a number of bloody brawls. Despite his age he has already developed a reputation as a notorious womanizer, having taken half a dozen whores to bed while his father was away during a tour of his realm. He is regarded as the black sheep of the family - he is held in contempt by Ormund, feared by Harbert and Mya, a disappointment to his father and a black stain on the family name. Lyonel had previously contemplated exiling Edric after he nearly killed a household retainer during a drunken dispute. In sharp, ironic contrast to his nature, he is considered by most to be extraordinarily attractive. Unknown to his family members, Edric has a history of torturing wild animals such as squirrels and rabbits in the woods outside Storm's End.

P5bRCTgm.jpg

Mya Baratheon

Born: 220 AC (age 13)
The youngest of the Lord Lyonel's children and his only daughter, Mya is a bright and precocious young girl who loves her father deeply. In return he dotes on her constantly, and frequently brings her with him on his travels so as to show her more of the world. Due to her somewhat spoiled nature, Mya can be willful on occasion.
