The world stood in peace as the rampaging armies of Hitler and Hirohito finally stood silent. A deathly pall has been cast over Europe and Asia, as the victorious United Nations are left to deal with the ruins left behind from the wars of conquest. A peace has settled across the planet between the major powers, but this unity was not long to last. Both the United States and the Soviet Union began to become more and more involved against each other, as the Soviet Union grew more and more isolated. The two largest victors of the Second World War now stand locked in a Twilight Struggle against once another. Only now, the Soviet Union's aging leader Joseph Stalin has passed from the Earth, setting up the stage for new leadership in the world's most powerful Communist state. It is now time for you to guide your nation as these two nations duel each other on the world stage, guiding your people through this period that has been created from the ashes of the most terrible war the world has ever seen.

This game is much like the successful and popular World in Revolution series of games, except under a different name. For such a time period, the name does not fit the nature of the game. The name itself was taken from the board game that only allows two players, however, this shall not be the case in Twilight Struggle: 1953. Instead, it will operate much like the older World in Revolutions, except under a slightly modified set of rules and procedures. For this thread, you are to submit your choices for a nation to place in this time period. The only nations that you may not sign up for are the United States and the Soviet Union, those will be dealt with separately. For general information, the game will start on July 27th, 1953.

In order to submit an application to play, you must post one to four picks in order to be considered as a player. If you are applying for a nation, your first pick MUST have at least a few sentence explanation on why you want that nation. Failure to do so will result in your submission being ignored.

Enjoy! Signups will last until Thursday, January 22nd, 2015.

1.Brazil
I have a lot of experience playing Brazil it's one of my favorite countries and this is my favorite era in Brazilian history right before the second military coup. I would like the lead Brazil to exterminate the favelas and to really complete some of my late game goals from MK I. and from MK II.

2.Argentina
In both 1920's Argentina has been an amazing opponent and a great friend to me I'd like a chance to play them and get a chance to see how things were from the other side of the tracks. Also for once it'd be nice to have the economic advantage and not be playing catch up.

3.West Germany
Because why not? West Germany is a very interesting nation in the early 50's and leading it through the trauma of the post-war years would be fun to do. Also it'd be a nice break from South America.

1. DDR, because I think the DDR would be interesting to play and I would hope to turn the nation in a socialist paradise. I do hope that I am allowed to do it, for I would try to make it more popular and better than it was in our own timeline. The last reason is that I generally want to play a communistic nation, but all other nations are or too powerful for my liking (Soviet Union, China) or too small and boring (Bulgaria, Hungary). I also hope that you will allow me to play the DDR to create a strong nation, rather than leading one to destruction.
2. BRD
2. The Netherlands
3. Indonesia

1. China, the Peoples Republic
So recently ripped from my communist nation I still sometimes sit in dark corners and cry bitter tears; what could have been. All my war plans wasted, my maps useless and my ambitions so cruelly crushed. I like states that pose somewhat of a challenge and also offer the potential for whining at other players. With the amount of people I have ongoing hatreds with, it is almost certain there will be a Sino-Soviet split. Also I like their flag.

2. North Korea (this is choice #1 if XVG gets China >.>)
Smaller version of China. State with a lot of potential, but only if China is also friendly. Would not recommend giving me North Korea if China is someone I don't get along with. I feel I'd be good at being a mad dictator and threatening half the world with nuclear annihilation.

3. United States of America
I apply solely on the conviction that Dutchbag is a scrub and will do wrong. Also I think giving me a large nuclear arsenal and navy cannot go wrong.

4. Soviet Union
I would do my best to follow one of my idols, Mathrim, and make this state fully democratic by 1962.

1. Peoples Republic of China: Still recent enough after the Chinese civil war but still needs alot of work to become a major power. So gets all the fun of a minor that needs building up and (hopefully) all the fun of a GP in the late game
2. Afghanistan: Even if this is unlikely to be allowed, might be fun to just be an annoyance to everyone around me.
3. SFR Yugo: Cause why not, maybe somehow turn those ethnic tensions from WW2 around.

1. Canada

Canada played an interesting role during the Cold War, specifically with NORAD, patrolling the North Atlantic and North Pacific as well as conducting Peace keeping operations around the world. Seeing that I was not capable of seeing Canada live through the Cold War in 1920, I would love to see it happen in Twilight. I also feel like playing an European nation would bring me too close to the conflict, whilst playing an African or South American nation would bring me too far away.

2. Japan
3. North Korea
4. Saudi Arabia

1. The People’s Republic of China
Without Comrade Mao there would be no new China. China has excellent potential for some funny Maoist adventures, from famine to industrialization, not to mention the possibility of propping up little Communist puppets here and there. Also, would be great to finally play an actually relevant and strong country. Or, eh, at least almost strong. Soon.

2. The Islamic Republic of Pakistan
A rising new nation in Asia, blessed with a considerable population, good basis for economic growth and eternal conflict with perfidious Hindustan.

3. Syrian Republic
No explanation needed.

Nation Choices:

1) Deutsches Demokratische Republik (East Germany): I have an interest in the country of East Germany, I myself speak some intermediate German, My family has very close ties to the country and I am what one could describe as a "Deutschophile". I am also quite well versed in the teachings of Marxism and Socialism, and the cold war in one of my favorite periods of history, and I just happens that I am actually studying the period for my GCSEs. My main aims would be attempting to make it a stable, prosperous nation that would be relatively free, and if opportunities permit it, allow reunification. I have been reliable with regards to orders, and I will do my utmost to remain to do so. I will also attempt to write as much IC as I can, to a quality that would be worthy of this game.

2) Socijalistička Federativna Republika Jugoslavija (Yugoslavia): I have done a lot of research into this country before WiR:1920, and I believe I could experiment more with the communistic forms of government and try to reform the country and prevent the ethnic tensions that lead to its demise.

3) The Imperial State of Iran: This was my second nation in 1920, and I believe that I could use my knowledge from that game to reform the country into a truly western nation and thus prevent the Islamic revolution.

4) Republica Socialistă România (Romania): One reason for this choice is retribution, another is that from the research that I did for 1920, I could put it to good use here.

1. United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland: As an Afrikaner it would be a good lesson in role playing, playing perfidious Albion.
2. French Fourth Republic
3. People's Republic of China
4. Italian Republic

1. Israel:

Israel and the Middle East were a volatile compound during, and after the cold war, being also a battleground between Soviet and American influence, with - in the end the Soviets taking the Arab Baath side, and the USA taking the Israeli side. However in 1953 the lines are not fully drawn yet, and labor zionism may prevail, opening israel to soviet immigration? Or not?

2. DDR:

Ze German Demokratik Republik, also sometimes called, or DDR, as it is called in ze German, was the soviet part of Germany, and right at the front of the cold war. It suffered badly from the soviet reparations and taking of industrial goods, however later became one of the Soviet puppets that was most developed and invented, amongst others the modern calculator! Clearly this feat must be repeated.

3. Yugoslavia:

Yugoslavia, albeit a "communist" system, broke with the Soviet Union and became leader of the non-aligned block. This unique position made Yugoslavia a diplomatic miracle, a symbol of "freedom" from both sides, and a very popular destination for hippies.

1. Italy- A power recovering swiftly under the Marshal Plan, Italy has much potential for becoming an important part of an increasingly inter-connected Europe.

2. Japan- Not even one year has passed since the occupation of Japan ended, and the nation has to deal with major changes to its government, culture, and foreign policy. With America's interest in East Asia rising, Japan stands as potentially an important player in Asia once again.

3. West Germany (BRD)- A nation recovering under the Marshal Plan and at the heart of the European struggle of the Cold War, it would be a country of significance with potential to become even more important with European unity.

(I like the Democratic ex-Axis powers basically)

4. Yugoslavia- a communist state, that doesn't follow the Soviet Union, and has to bring together many ethnic groups is full of potential, though difficult to achieve.

As much as I would like to reprise my role as the USSR following the 1920, and the research I have done into the country for the period regarding the soviet economy and military and their relationship.

However, if that is not an option, my choices are as follows with the reasoning behind these choices.
1. Japan - As it will allow me concentrate on the economic growth and development of the nation without too much international polticing and the associated headaches. Also a fairly loyal population is a good bonus. It would also allow me to reprise my role in the previous 1953.
2. France - the fun of being the lone wolf like character of French entering and leaving NATO, the EEC, and all the fun of economic cooperation and the development of nuclear power (and the Force de Frappe). Additional French qualification: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y-7j4WVTgWc
3. India - champion of the Non-Aligned movement, the chance to raise hundreds of millions of people to better lives, the world's largest democracy
4. UK - the chance to manage the decline of the empire, while retaining pride, and pushing forward to a new role on the world stage.

Bonus. Brazil - avoid the stagnation and dictatorships of history and develop a better future for the people.

Bigger request, not be forgotten for the 4th straight game in signups >.>

1: Portugal/Estado Novo

I would like to apply for Portugal due to my infatuation with the idea of Portugal keeping its colonial intact. The period of decolonization could prove to be a very valuable learning experience for me as I am not very used to managing overseas anything in the forum games. I honestly do believe that I could be able to usher in Portugal as a somewhat important global player in international politics. It would be nice to play a nation that isn't immediately at risk of being invaded or destitute.

3: Denmark

Greenland and technological advancements. I want to increase centralization and make the Faroe Islands a county of Denmark once more.

4: Belgium

The Congo, if nothing else. While efforts are being taken to improve the colony at this point of time, I ultimately want to keep it under Belgium, which is basically at pipe dream at best.

2: Quốc gia Việt Nam

1953 is in the only modern time period where I actually like the Vietnamese leadership. Also, I'm Vietnamese myself, so I am pretty interested in ushering in as a potential regional power without having to become Communist.

1. The Kingdom of Iraq
An interesting regional power that is at the cusp of a revolution, from the Hashemite monarchy to the glorious republic. I have some degree of experience in overseeing a majestic revolution of arms by heroic men (blessed be the Musso), and I feel I can make a sensible path for the decaying Iraqi kingdom.

2. The Kingdom of Libya
This is a very close second, on par with my first choice, so I figured I'd give it a quip too. Similarly, we see a kingdom destined to fall to pan-Arab generals, and I feel I have the ability to make this metamorphisis interesting for others to read about and for me to create a new path for.

3. Republic of Indonesia

1. The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea)
A good understanding of North Korean politics in the 50s and 60s; I won't cause too much trouble (lol), and it'll be fun to see if I can avoid the mishaps the DPRK caused itself in the 20th century. It has a very unique, Asian-tinged type of Marxist ideology, independent especially of Stalinism and even from Maoism that can be shaped and molded into making North Korea a very fun and interesting country.

2. The German Democratic Republic (East Germany)

3. The Republic of Korea (South Korea)

1. Saudi Arabia
-Saudi Arabia is an interesting choice to play as they aren't developed much in the way of their economy but as most of my other choices they have the resources to develop it, namely Oil. As well as being one of the main powers who has the capability in itself to be the dominating power of the Middle East due to their economy. They also must balance themselves between the East and West like so many other nations. The culture of Saudi Arabia is also interesting as it is the birthplace of Islam and embraces many aspects of Bedouin culture.

2. The Republic of Turkey
-Due to Turkeys interesting position in the Mediterranean and controlling the entrance into the Black Sea it is a major player in the relations of the East and West despite being neutral in World War Two. Even though reforms have been made in Turkey it still has room for improvement in most areas.

3. Egypt
- Egypt is more conflict centered but to me it doesn't make it any less fun to play as they also need to develop an economy more while balancing relations between Eastern and Western influences.

4. Sweden
-Sweden has a lot of potential to become great due to their Iron deposits in addition to their timber industry. While developed their position puts them closer to the East and would be very interesting to play in an East-West conflict.

1. Tanganyika African National Union (TANU). Tanganyika is an interesting land with a great deal of potential, ranging from its abundance of natural resources to its stunning landscapes. However it also has a great deal of problems, including poor basic infrastructure, poor healthcare and British governance. Tanganyika shall be a challenge, however I believe the future is bright. My goal for Tanganyika shall be to eventually make it a success story, a nation which can work with its neighbors, provide the services its citizens require, and which boasts a robust economy. To be a key player in East Africa.
2. Federation of Malaya.
3. Malta. Because Malta doesn't get enough acknowledgment in WiR.

1. The State of Israel
Born in the aftermath of World War II, the State of Israel is unique in modern history: a state founded as the homeland for a persecuted people. Israel is a nation at war, with much of its claimed territory behind the Green Line established during the ceasefire of the Arab-Israeli War of 1948. It is in many ways the focal point of the entire Middle East. I'm looking forward to the challenge of playing a small, isolated nation surrounded by hostile neighbors, and one that's still technically at war with all of them.

1. The United Kingdom - The Crown Jewel is gone, and the rest of the empire is slowly disappearing. I'd like to try out my homeland and see whether I can manage its changing role in the world gracefully. There's stronger bonds with the dominions and the rest of the Commonwealth to cultivate, there's the process of decolonisation to hopefully administer better, and there's an economy to successfully reboot after the horrors of war - it was only last year that tea stopped being rationed! Although she is no longer the world's most powerful country, I hope to ensure that Her Majesty's Government can remain a key player in the world affairs.

2. The Republic of China - The rightful President of China might not have the mainland any longer, but he has the loyalist stronghold of Taiwan behind him! Armed with a conviction of crushing communists in the one hand, and the teachings of Sun Yat-Sen in the other, nothing is impossible for Chiang. I hope to transform the Taiwan into an shining beacon of hope that one day the rest of China shall experience.

3. The Kingdom of Spain - Because not even Franco's death will be enough to bring an end to his legacy.
