If you aren't the leader of the alliance, you'll have the option "cancel alliance" (or something like that) in the diplomatic screen.

If you're the leader, you can't leave the alliance. It's the drawback..

If you are the leader, but nevertheless want out, your quickest solution is to insult all your allies until they hate you, then declare war on somebody and ask for their help. They should all bail on you, and you're free to start/join a new alliance - plus you have Casus Belli on all your former allies :D

If you want to use this trick but not actually fight a war, pick on somebody like Nubia, Pskov, or Cologne, who can't possibly attack you. (Make sure they don't have powerful allies!)

"Leave alliance" if you're not the leader but will cost stability. Otherwise, you decline a request to join in the war which will also cost stability points. Change religion usually works very well but has the big stability hit.

If you are the leader you should be able to "Ban from alliance" on each member but this will give you a stability hit for each one.

The safest things is to do, as suggested and declare war, with a country with whom your partners are all more friendly than with you.

Or maybe you could just wait until it expires.

What's more don't be fooled by the fact that some place is far away and will never attack you. I've had Algerians in Ireland before and Scots invading Northern Germany when they were supposed to be defending their homeland against England (who declared war). Poles will appear in North America in a war with Prussia.

General rule. It they have a fleet and an army and know how to find you, they will probably turn up sooner or later and presumably when you have forgotten about it too

Very good points... that's why it's nice to see an alliance between, say, Bavaria and Thuringen, since both are completely landlocked and couldn't fight you if they tried. *G*

Nubia is pretty safe if you have no African/Asian lands.. after running a fleet all the way around Africa with no stopovers, they won't have enough troops left to be able to invade a cowshed.
