Does the single player campaign only support one campaign line (meaning only playing one story line) at a time? I played all three beginning campaign starters thinking I could pick and choose which campaign I wanted to play at will, but it seems if you play one campaign then existing campaign saves are removed?

Yes, more or less. You have 2 missions with each race and then a final mission, where you can take any commander whose campaign you finished.
Oh ok. So you have to complete that campaign, otherwise you will lose progress of that first campaign if you happen to start another campaign of another race, correct?
...ummm, no. You need to go to Load Game if you wanna load a campaign, not hit "New Campaign"
