It's a small suggestion but I would personally remove ethics from slaves.

They don't use those until they are free (no faction so no happiness gain and no faction share increase) and an ethics could probably be rolled for them at that point (with a high weight for the dominant faction of their new empire and egalitarian).

This would remove a bit of clutter as slaves can have up to 6 groups for the same subspecie (one for each ethic). In particular gestalt that have slaves don't have governing attraction so slaves don't even end up grouping into 2 or 3 factions + egalitarian.

As pops are now treated by group, going from 6 to 1 slave group would divide by 6 the calculations of pops that are 100% identical otherwise. So even performance wise that would be a small buff.

I mean, while slaves aren't allowed to be in a faction, they still can have the ethics of one.
As well as try to convince their overlords from being in such a faction.

Yup I should have used the word ethic instead of faction. Would have been clearer (PS : changed it).

Yes slaves could have ethics but having one generate an extra group for basically nothing. Slaves don't have their happiness changed by ethics and they can't be in a faction so they don't influence faction shares. So having an ethic does nothing but add extra subgroups for slaves. 4.0 is all about grouping pops that act the same way... all slaves of the same subspecie act exactly the same.

The only way they don't is if they are freed, and I think that calculation could be done at that point. As a bonus, slaves would not have to be checked for ethic attraction which would further reduce the number of checks /tic (on top of grouping).

Slave ethics are pretty important -- when I unleash my Liberation War, those newly freed slaves start to be counted.

That means I can look at slave ethics to know if declaring a Liberation War is worth doing.

Imo, the "pop group clutter" doesn't need to be "fixed".
There is no need to reduce the number of pop groups in the background, but the UI need to display less of them.

I would not display ethics by default (for all pops), and instead add a toggle for the few cases where the player want to see them.
