So what gives? I am kicking around western Europe as England and all is right with the world, when I have finally had enough of the shenanigans in Ireland. So I go in there and realize that Ulster and their ilk have land tech levels hovering around 10 or 12 in the 1510s, whereas I am scraping for my 6 as quickly as possible. Overall I notice that most AI nations, no matter how much I spend or where my sliders are seem to totally outdistance me in the land/sea tech arena. In fact the smaller they are, the higher the tech gets.

This can't make sense. My nation has vast resources after kicking over France and punishing Spain on a few occasions. How in the heck can they be so far ahead? I must be missing something big. Thanks in advance!

wrong culture/religion increases tech costs, so does lower stab [from wars etc]. Small peaceful nations which are 100% the right culture religion can just focus on teching up rather pleasantly.

Also, the AI in 1.2 is not really good at researching infra and trade, so its military techs end up ahead in the short term and behind in the long term. I've done some work on its priorities since 1.2.

@chessmasterhex

If AI is too strong you can turn off AI cheat:
1. open For the Glory\Db\Map\terrains.txt
2. change all values in ai_attack_power to 1.00

Now AI don't cheating :)
The comment in terrains.txt is somewhat unclear, so let me set the record straight: ai_attack_power is a modifier to tell the AI how many extra troops it needs to bring to that terrain. It's tweakable so that if you see the AI consistently not bringing enough troops when attacking into e.g. mountains, you can adjust the modifier yourself.

ai_conquer_check actually is a relatively small modifier compared to ai_attack_power. I'm not sure why it got exported as a boolean instead of an integer.

So, what are the number ranges for both ai_attack_power and ai_conquer_check ? and is each number a multiplier based on needed amount of troops that can counter the defence numbers of the province in question

BTW , anty resolution to my issue I sent you.?

ai_attack_power isn't specifically limited, but values below 1 probably wouldn't make sense and values at or below 0 would probably be gamebreaking.
ai_conquer_check is a yes/no.

More or less, yes.

ok, what what should the number be for ai_attack_power if I lower the defence to 4000 in the defines file?

EDIT...I remember now , I just read my beta notes.

Because how tech is worked out in this game is really quite stupid, the bigger you get the more tech costs...doesnt matter that you actually have more money to invest* (* while you continue to expand).

Expanding - as a rule - is bad for tech, the only way to bring the equation back the other way is to increase trade and your manufacturing base... or, only conquer rich provinces aka Gold or Cots (centre of trades).... or or or looting enemy provinces and the such... gain income without gaining land.

I think the system is actually pretty nice, it keeps the large nations from pulling to far ahead in tech, otherwise France would stomp everyone. Together with the neighbour bonus it keeps most countries in the tech group equal unless they really screw up.

I think it's more problematic that OPM's are able to field such huges armies despite of their small size!

I reckon the whole tech system could be just thrown out the door and the process could just be kept to historical values / time lines. That way everyone will always have roughly the same (Extra money and size should help those nations be at the cutting edge, while economic dunghills like Ulster would be alittle behind)... of course Africa, large parts of Asia etc will be in the stone age for most of the game though. But then a real neighborhood bonus could come into play... when a European nation enters parts of Africa, the 'tech' of neighboring nations will increase dramatically etc

But of course Im just dreaming... we got what we got.

And that is exactly what I like in the tech system. It resembles history - the larger empires got the closer to their end they came.
e.g. It ought to lower Austria-Hungarys speed in developing a better military when they take over wrong religion, wrong culture provinces like bosnia.

Unless you carefully pick where to expand. Taking only gold and/or Centers of Trade or very rich provinces will give you relativeley more money to spend on technology than the increase in cost for those technologies.
