So, ummm..... Apparently I'm at war with France now.

How come nobody told me?

In my Aquitaine save, I've become the King of Navarra. I still own all my French lands, but now also have 5 counties (2 mine, 3 vassals) south of the Pyrenees.

I've just come out of wars with Léon and Urgell (which had gone independent).

Léon were, and still are, allied with the Duchy of Galloway. Urgell had no allies.

By that logic, I should be at war with Galloway, but I'm not. There is no reason, as far as I can tell, for my being at war with France.

I haven't been at war with any of their allies, they haven't been at war with any of mine. I've not declared war on them. I've had no notification of them declaring war on me.

The first I knew about it, I saw some French armies marching around, and decided to have a look and see who they were off to fight, only to see it was me.

So why am I suddenly at war with France, and why wasn't I notified at all?

And how do I change the save file to get rid of the war? (Seeing as how the AI cheated, I have no qualms about cheating to fix the problem on this occasion)

I'm pretty sure the French King has claims on your french holdings and they won't tolerate people suddenly declaring independence.

Right, I understand that, but:

A. I've been independent for almost 5 years already, in which time I've been at peace with France, and had relations of +101 with him. If he was that pissed off about it, he could've declared war straight away. It's not like he's been fighting anyone else in the meantime.

B. When war is declared you get a message about it, like this one:

Which I never got.

EDIT: Never mind, I fought them off anyway, though it cost about 300 gold and the lives of a couple of my counts, and they only relinquished their claims on 2 of my counties, so I suspect I'll be seeing more of them later....

When your primary title changes(in this case from D of Aq to K of Na) you are treated as AI until you reload.

Therefore you get no warning when war is declared upon you.

(This has happened to me an embarrasing number of times)

Oh OK, that's weird, but somehow typical of Paradox.

Thanks for explaining ;)

Yes, you should always save and reload as soon as you go from Count to Duke or Duke to King. Gaining other titles of the same rank doesn't matter, just moving to a higher rank.

To be more precise, you need to save and reload everytime when your primary title changes. Which might sometimes also mean that you have the save and reload if you keep the same rank, but because for some reason you lose your primary title in a war.
