i have never had a problem with past paradox games however i need help pinpointing the problem thats causes rome to be incredibly slow and practicly unplayable

I'm assuming you've updated your drivers to the latest versions and have DirectX 9.0c?

How does EU3 run on your machine? Rome should run similarly (if not a little faster). Have you installed anything else recently on your machine? Do you have any hard drive space left? I'd check what background processes are running (esp. antivirus stuff) and see if you can disable them or at least tone them down. Also, reduce Rome's video settings to the most basic level.

A tip:

When you don't actually need to look at the game (During peace or waiting for BB to go down etc)

Zoom all the way out, and move your view over some PTI. As there is nothing to process, it goes much much faster.

actually, zooming right in over PTI should be even quicker.
