I play HOI2 on a mac, and now that Virtual Programming has fixed the serious bugs with their 1.3b release and I can play the game again, I am looking at mods.

CORE is now available for the mac platform. Can anyone quickly summarize or point me to a link describing its features/advantages?

thanks.

CORE takes HOI2 to the next level. It has a hugely improved tech tree (though it takes some time to get the hang of it), revised units and historical 1936 OOB's, a 1:1 naval unit queue, and of course many, many new events and event chains (and not only for the major powers, but minors as well). Aim is to follow history as close as possible, but offer in-depth 'what-if' options as well. For instance the Munich chain, a 'simple' chain in HOI2 which divides up CZE in two, maybe three events offering no real alternatives, is replaced by two hundred (!) events based on the actual Munich conference.
The current release of CORE, 0.11, is the first (beta) release of the mod plus its primary bug fixes. As a result it still has a very weak AI (the default Paradox HOI2 AI, actually). That will be revised in 0.2, which is pending for beta-testing in a couple of weeks. Apart from the AI some major improvements will be added in 0.2, as well as an overhaul of parts of the existing tech tree as well, to improve it even further.
Though other mods are around for HOI2, most of them more 'mature', I've tried most of 'em but revert to CORE pretty soon after. It's simply the most balanced one, I guess. It creates a challenge for the player, and though the game will develop along historical lines 9 out of 10 times you play it, it will go ahistorical at times, making it less predictable (at a price of course).
Most of the mod developers have close ties with Paradox and the original HOI2 (DD as well), which certainly helps. In 0.2 CORE will revert from HOI2 1.2 to 1.3b files, and (probably) from thereafter to DD. AFAIK 0.11 works fine on a MAC.

Should you choose to try CORE, remember it's installed in a subdirectory of HOI2, so it won't hurt your existing HOI2 install one bit. And if you're want to find out more about CORE (or the impressive VIP mod for Victoria: an empire under the sun for that matter, which is about to release 0.5) you're welcome to visit the development forum at www.21vikings.dk ... We're allways looking for more reporters (testers) anyway ;)

Regards,

Maarten (CORE addict and beta-tester)

Hagar,

Thanks for the great description. I'm sold. One question: does CORE explore different potential political evolutions in Europe prior to 1936? In other words, is Germany always National Socialist or are there options to be communist or parliamentarian? Same for other major and minor powers.

I'm wondering because, if the game proceeds historically 9 times out of 10, as you say, and is more historical wrt OOBs, unit abilities, and such, I am afraid that it might take some of the fun out of playing Germany. After all, Germany was in a tough place, historically, hemmed in by enemies east and west.

There are options for you as a German player that can lead you on alternative paths and there are some proceedings, if not outcomes, that may be ahistorical from other nations' choices in response to yours. The split is 90/10 between historical and ahistorical, but since that split exists within almost all events the likelyhood of something going ahistorical in every game is almost guaranteed.

Hope you like the mod and don't hesitate to ask any questions!

In all fairness it should be noted that we are, as Hagar says, with 0.11 still with vanilla 1.2 base files, which prevents it from being compared fully to vanilla itself. I have pretty high hopes that 0.2 (and I personally assume a hotfix, considering the number of changes we're making) will make it much more playable and enjoyable.

(I still like playing 0.11 myself, but I just wanted to note this especially)
