I don't know if anyone has asked this question or if
I should have read it somewhere, but...

when you open up the screen which shows your monarch
(or any other nations monarch), there is a number that
I wonder about. It's above your monarchs name and stats
and starts with an # followed by a number. (Between 1 - 10.)

What is the function of this number? Has it any meaning
at all? Does it affect the game in any way? Or is it there just to anoy someone which has nothing better to do than to worry about it?
 
If it's the large number in a shield you're referring to, that would be your current VP standing in relation to everyone else (ie. #5 = fifth in VPs). You can also use the arrows at the bottom to scroll through the other nations to see where everybody is...
