Using proton or trying to play nativly doesn't work. I click play on steam and nothing. The game acts as if it's being played and then nothing for a few seconds before steam recognizes that it's closed. I don't know what else to say, nothing i've tried helped. I thought that paradox launcher works on linux?
I tried to reinstall the launcher, the game, steam itself, messing around with launcher settings, granting permissions to the app.
Launching hoi4 without the launcher works, vicky 3 doesn't, but i need the launcher to work to use mods.
I'm using the latest version of ubuntu, i don't know what else i need to provide, i'm new to linux , had to switch due to unrelated reasons, so i'm probably doing something wrong.

The native linux version of the launcher normally works. Have you already tried the steps which are described under "If none of the above first steps work please try the following:" in this launcher support article?
If that doesn't help, how did you install steam? The versions of steam which you can get from your package management (e.g. via flatpak) are often problematic. Installing the official debian/ubuntu package from https://store.steampowered.com/about/ often works better. You have to uninstall your other version first and I think you also have to remove all your user specific steam files (e.g. from ~/.steam or ~/.local/share/steam or wherever your steam version installed them)

Edit: fixed broken link
