Hello Guys

Bought Surviving Mars recently and now on my first real game.

Started with the European Union and want to do a research run.

The EU has as special Building, the Low G Labs which need less people to operated and are outside the Dome.

First i think it is a bonus to have them outside and dont waste space in the dome but now i think they are worst then regular research labs.
Because they are outside the dome the scientists get a penalty for working outside so the efficiency would be not as high as inside the dome.
Especial before you have a lot of martianborn you cant run nightshifts at the Low G labs because of the double penalty and the go insane.

Also i want to set up a new researchdome at a place where i have two 20% Research Sites so 40% more research in this dome...but does this buff also apply for the outside low g labs?
Also the network note spire boosts research in a Dome. Again does it also work on the outside labs?

Do Low G labs count as a new research building and have there own Collaboration Loss? In the wiki no penalty is mentioned.

And also a last question. Is it better at the 40% research site dome to stack this only with research labs and hawking institutes and a connected dome with housing and services and take the efficiently penalty?

Hope some of the veteran players can help me.

Thanks in advance.

I tend to play Europe pretty exclusively. I only ever build 1 low-g lab to get the bonus reduction on techs it offers. It's an OK very-early game way to add some research to a basic dome, but research labs and Hawking Institutes are much more effective later when larger domes and spires become available/effective.

I am uncertain if law-g labs research gets affected by location bonuses. I think those are applied inside domes only, but I've never really tried to test it out. The same for spires.

I always found inter-dome travel more annoying than valuable. I'd probably just arrange a couple of medium domes with 3-5 Hawking Institutes, network node, housing and amenities sharing the bonuses.

Each Science building suffers from diminish returns on THAT type of building (minus 10 percent for each building beyond 1, maxing out at 50 percent penalty). The two standard science buildings and explorers are each on separate diminishing returns.

The strength of low g labs is that they are another building type... allowing you to have another separate diminishing return. They also have high sci/worker. The game mechanics really favor building 2 (maybe 3) of each research building eventually - then just picking one research building to build tons of (only getting the max 50 percent penalty on that type of science building - like how the other poster spams hawkings).

Workers only get a performance penalty when working in a dome they do not live in (via passage), not for working outside of a dome. They do however get a sanity penalty, as you noted, which can decrease their performance by -5, since the +5 morale from high sanity disappears. Later, both medical centers and smart homes can keep sanity high even with a daily -10.

The low-g lab is only buffed by research sites in its direct working radius. They do have their own collaboration loss, which is a big part of their strength. The first lab build also reduces the cost of Physics and Biotech by 20%, so it can pay to build one early.

Especially if you have a network node, it can pay to stack as many research buildings as possible in a single dome. (network node is more than 20 bonus). I would however "export" services first, then housing. I like to build a medium dome with research and housing and a connected barrel dome with open air gyms, parks, and some additional housing.

Thank you for the replies.

So my suspicion was correct that the low g labs are only an addition to the normal labs and not a replacement.

So the Physics and biotech bonus is nice.

Then i will keep the 2 that i have and stack as many normal labs in the dome that covers the two 20% research sites.
