1) Grant the title to someone
2) Just name flavour
3) They are defined like that so that in all other start dates where they joined of their free will they are called Prince etc and it cannot be revoked
4) Event chain that may trigger
5) A ruler can grant their son who is a bastard a cadet dynasty

while I understand that this is likely a limitation of how CK2 handles title names, I do like the idea of being able to let some of the Westerosi kings keep their crowns after submitting to the Iron Throne if I like them...

Maybe as some sort of "minor" title? like how the Wardens of the North/South/East/West?
Grant them royal privilege then, it is a targeted decision

Sure the granting of Ghaston Grey works as intended? I tried again and it worked, but the first time I gave it away it didn't seem to become a military command. Any specific requirements for the holder? Like, do they need a certain combination of gender, stats or traits in order for Ghaston Grey to work properly?

So cadet dynasties can only be granted from parents to bastard children? Do they need to be a vassal or part of the same realm? Legit bastards excluded I presume?
Who are you trying to grant it to? I just loaded up as Doran in Crowned Stag and granted it to Oberyn and it was a military command
The decision is the cadet_bastard decision in the targetted_decisions file the conditions are all there but summarised very quickly it is: they are your bastard, not a prisoner and in your realm, they are 16 and male, you have some prestige or they have good stats and you have a spare title you can give away

One final thing before I stop bothering people.

How do I edit defines.lua? There were a few changes I wanted to try, but when i change the file the game refuses to start, and even after resetting all values to their original values the game is still down. The only fix is to delete the whole thing and replace it with a new copy of defines.lua. I haven't had any problems with defines in the base game or CK2+, so what am I doing wrong here?
You edit defines.lua the same way you would edit it normally, what lines are you editing that is causing it crash?
