I thought i say somewhere that the speed could be altered in MP games. Is that true or what?

Changing speed in-game thru the options menu doesn't work, but you can use the hotkeys (ctrl + and -) to change speeds. I don't think you could do it in version 1.00 though, so make sure you upgrade to 1.03.
On the laptop I have to press the Fn key + ctrl + the "-" or "+" .. and its real hard to make it click together at times..
