Just finished binge watching Game of Thrones, season 1 and 2 ( no spoilers about what's to come! ), so I plan to finally download this mod for Crusader Kings. I don't plan on following the show, and I actually want to change the course of history. But I need to ask you all first if this is possible:

After Robert's Rebellion, is it possible to 'steal' the throne from him as Eddard? In the show, they said all Ned had to do was climb the steps first; Is this necessarily true in game? Like a flavor event or simply sacking King's Landing first?

Thanks!

Robert had the stronger claim but he also said he never wanted the throne. If Robert and Jon Arryn chose to support Eddard instead it would probably have happened. The Riverlands would support it too, thanks to Catlyn's betrothal. The Westerlands would be forced to accept it due to their betrayal, otherwise they would be ostracised due to the murders. That leaves only Dorne and the Reach to contest it.

That was only a quote in the show for a reason. It was never said in the books (correct me if I'm wrong) but Eddard had no claim at all to the Iron Throne. Climbing the steps and sitting in the chair wouldn't have been enough to make himself king, even with support. I doubt even Robert would have supported that.

The only reason Robert was able to take the throne was because his grandmother was Rhaella Targaryen, giving him a legitimate claim to it.

The succession laws also made Robert unable to claim the throne, doubly so because there were still some Targaryen's alive. Robert got the throne because his claim was the strongest of those usually exempt from succession, and he had the force to back it up. He was them able to declare the surviving Targaryen's exiles and removed from succession.

There's no reason another Lord Paramount couldn't have gotten the throne if Robert refused.

The "other" Targaryans where a girl, so unable to inherent under any regard, and a exile. Dany does not have a good "claim on the throne". She was born after her father's death, giving her a claim through her mother, but none the less a weak one.

You're forgetting Viserys. He would be a boy king, but yeah he has a better claim on the Iron Throne.

I would actually prefer that for the Robert's Rebellion bookmark, Robert is actually given the choice of the CB he will use in the rebellion: To place himself on the Iron Throne OR to simply depose Aerys. The CB to free Lyanna remains, of course.

Pretty sure he'd want Rhaegar's head on a stick regardless though. Also, I was under the impression that Robert wasn't really the one who made that call; it seems more of a Jon Arryn decision. They needed a figurehead, and Robert was the only prominent rebel with a non-laughable claim to the throne. Add that young Robert, for all his faults, was extremely charismatic and already a war hero.

There's also the fact that Ned backstabbing his best friend by claiming the throne (especially when his sister is still missing) is about the least Ned-like thing you can possibly imagine him doing.

Not to mention the impracticality of Ned being king. His power base was the other end of the continent and he followed the wrong gods. Robert was the more pragmatic choice. Which is a bit embarressing all things considered.

Robert had the claim, but really, almost every other Lord Paramount would have made a better king. Of course, if Lyanna hadn't died, and Tywin becomes Hand, things will have been very different.

Well, there is an event I think if you're Robb you can decide to leave the Iron Throne "open" so that the first guy who steps in King's Landing becomes king. Maybe the same could be uttilized here?

I don't think the line appears anywhere verbatim, but the idea of Ned proclaiming himself king after the Sack of King's Landing (and the many, many reasons why he would never do it) was at least brought up in the books.

As long as there is a King in the North, Robb and his successors will never have peace. Once there is a King on the Iron Throne who can get all the LPs on his side, the North and The Riverlands cannot stand against such numbers.

Surely a combined force of the southern realms would be able to invade the independent north. But what I meant is that the first guy who takes King's Landing in the rebellion could become King, that would be a solution for Eddard to gain the Iron Throne or simply an event in the beginning of the war where Eddard can choose to press his own claim on the throne.

He would give Dorne the heads of Clegane and Lorch, and he has a son of an age with Margaery Tyrell.

There isn't any official evidence that the Stark line has any claim to the throne... but the heresy around a certain forum claims that just as Robert has a little dragon blood in his veins, so does Ned and his brothers. After all, we all know Ned's father is Rickard and Rickard's father is Edwyle, but neither Rickard's nor Edwyle's wife are known. In fact, we can go further and say that we know nothing of who came before Edwyle. The Aerys may be mad, but he was afraid of the Starks and Baratheons for a reason.

Not to mention that House Baratheon is generally believed to be a bastard/cadet House of the Targaryens. That still gives more claim than many.

I think that Jamie did not know himself well on the genealogy and history, and thought like men who respects only strength and is not too honorable :D
Stark is first, have army, Riverland support him(Hoster's daughter will be queen) maybe Vale too. Why not ?
