Inspired by the National Ideas and Achievement suggestions threads, I thought it would be a good idea to have a thread specifically for suggesting new flavour text for the Start-Up Screen, keeping everything in one place and making them much easier to find.

Please feel free to contribute! If you're looking for some inspiration, check out Demetrios's list of important and interesting countries that (as yet) don't have any flavour text.

The most recent (17/10/2017) EU4 DD announced a new feature called Startup Screen. This will be a little text that will appear when you start a game, giving some info and flavor about the country you've selected and it's mechanics. As they only have screens for 29 countries* they said in the DD that they'll take suggestions. So I made this thread to have all suggestions in one place (and I'll add links to this OP as people make suggestions.

* @Trin Tragula gave this list in the DD thread:
Ming
Mongolia
Iroquois
Huron
Osage
Cherokee
Creek
Poland
Austria
Sweden
Castile
Burgundy
France
Denmark
Portugal
England
Brandenburg
Muscovy
The Ottoman Empire
The Mamluk Sultanate
Timurids
Qara Qoyunlu
Aq Qoyunlu
Khorasan
Transoxiana
Hisn Kayfa (Ayyubids)
Kharabakh
Georgia
Yemen (shared with Rassids and Aden)

EDIT:

Suggestions:

Byzantium (by me, also check @CheesySnake's version in their thread, and the one by @holyvigil here).

Byzantium
It wouldn't be a suggestion thread without a mention for:

Byzantium

The last two hundred years have not been kind to what remains of the Eastern Roman Empire. Following the sack of Constantinople in 1204, the Empire dissolved into three successor states: Nicaea, Epirus and Trebizond.

In addition to battling for their survival against the Latin Empire that had been established by the Crusaders in Greece, the Sejluk Turks also gradually nibbled away at Imperial possessions in Anatolia and Asia Minor. The recapture of Constantinople by the Nicaeans in 1261 restored the Empire under the Palaiologos Dynasty.

Despite some initial success at consolidating their position, the rise of the Ottoman Turks and their subsequent conquest of Anatolia and the Balkans has left the Byzantines reduced to a shadow of their former selves, clinging on to their holdings in the Morea, and with only the Duke of Athens still swearing fealty to the Emperor in Constantinople.

Following their victory in Battle of Varna, the Ottoman's attention is diverted to the Balkans which may yet give the Emperor some time to build his forces and craft alliances for the next inevitable war with the Turks. The situation is bleak, but if that war can be won, there is yet hope that the Empire will rise again and see the glory of Rome restored.

Holy fuck dude we're thinking the exact same things. (I was writing a Byz suggestion in "my" thread and decided to refresh the forum just for curiosity).

Haha, feel free to post it here. It'd be interesting to read your take on it.

Byzantium
I made one for Byzantium (country tab only), because, you know, it's Byzantium.

The last vestige of the Roman Empire. Byzantium has been in decline since the Fourth Crusade, where Venetian treasons briefly cost them their capital of Constantinople. Now their position is even more dire because of the ever-present threat of the Ottomans, who will end them unless some divine intervention smiles upon these pitiful Romans.

The Emperor of Byzantium, Ioannes VIII from the Palaiologos dynasty, rules a realm reduced to it's capital, part of Morea and an Athenian Vassal. But the Greeks still remember a time when they lived under the Empire and should the opportunity arise, they'll welcome it's banner again.

The Eastern Mediterranean is a hostile land for small states: the Turkish Sultan is almost unopposed in Anatolia and the Balkans, with the Mamluks in Egypt as their only true rival. The seas are ruled by the merchant republics of Venice and Genoa, who'd like nothing more than to control the trade that flows through Constantinople.

But should you prove the Ottomans are the sick man of Europe and retake Anatolia, you can reestablish the theme system and turn the peninsula into a power capable of restoring Caesar's Rome.

Byzantium
Here's another Byzantium suggestion posted by @holyvigil: https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/foru...zantium-country-information-proposal.1050749/

Here is my proposal for Byzantium the most unique country in the world of 1444. I don't actually know how long the France introduction is but if necessary I could go into more detail on all these points but I do think this properly summarizes Byzantium at 1444 and gets a feel for it's attitude.:

Byzantium or Empire of the Romans as they would call themselves is a nation steeped in history. Since the 1204 Sack of Constantinople the city and by extension Byzantium has never fully recovered. Civil war, Crusader states, and Muslim invaders have all wrecked the nation.

Byzantium is surrounded on all sides by the Ottoman Empire a young empire arisen from the Sejuk Empire's own civil strife.

Recently Byzantium has reconquered the crusader state of Achaia and has established Athens a as a tributary state. The crusader states of Naxos, Negroponte, Corfu, Chios and more remain under Catholic powers.

The Emperor has spent more time abroad in the last few years than at home. Pleading with the Catholic Nations, many of whom invaded Byzantium years earlier, to save Byzantium. Their response was the Crusade of Varna. A host of countries' armies descended upon the Balkans and while the Crusade had many early victories it was ultimately a failure. Now Byzantium is isolated and without any strong nations to protect Byzantium the Roman Empire is surely doomed to come to an end.

But if by some stroke of diplomatic or military genius the Turkish armies are able to be beaten back across the Bosphorus then there is hope for the empire. Byzantium would have the chance to create an empire that exceeds Justinian's, that exceeds even Augustus' greatest accomplishments, an empire that would last for a thousand more years.

EDIT: Revised post due to merging of threads.

Scotland
So we don't go completely Byzanticrazy:

Scotland
Twice in the last 150 years an English King has attempted to seize the Scottish throne, and twice have the Scots emerged victorious. The most recent of these wars ended almost 90 years ago, yet the Auld Enemy's ambition to unite the Crowns is unlikely to have been completely extinguished. Being relatively isolated atop their perch, and with a hungry neighbour to the south, the Scots will likely have to look to the Continent for allies.

With the Hundred Years War threatening to reignite, Charles VII of France is no friend of the English. The Scots and French have fought side-by-side during the War multiple times, and the Garde Écossaise have served as bodyguards of the French Monarch since 1418. Renewing the Auld Alliance would likely be of interest to him, and a distracted England may provide opportunity for a prudent King of Scots to advance the frontier.

Following the death of David II, son of Robert the Bruce, in 1371, the Scottish Crown passed to the House of Stuart. The current King of Scots, James II, came to the throne in 1437 while just a child. The political machinations that occurred during his regency, and the resulting growth in power of the Earls of Douglas will eventually need to be dealt with one way or another.

If their position at home can be secured, the Scots may look west across the Irish Sea. Between plague and war, English hegemony over Ireland has diminished, and while they are preoccupied with defending their holdings in France, the squabbling Earldoms may make a tempting acquisition.

After that, the Scots may look further afield. Perhaps they would aim to establish themselves on the Continent, like the English before them, or sail off to the West in search of pastures green.

Denmark
Danmark
In 1397 the three kingdoms of Scandinavia finally decided to unite into one union with one leader. The Arch-King Christian I has set his eyes towards the riches of the south, to the displeasing of the Swedish nobles, who now threaten to leave the union.

If this can be prevented, the kings of Denmark might eventually furfill the ambition of uniting the three crowns into one centralized state. Should this succeed, Scandinavia is destined to become a great power.

Korea
Korea
Korea lies at a crossroads in 1444. Its namesake dynasty, Goryeo, has fallen to a coup by General Yi Seong-gye in 1392, ushering in a new age of scientific innovation and Confucian thought. The current king Do, perhaps better known to history as "Sejong the Great", has invented a new and innovative way of writing the Korean language, improving the literacy of his people for generations to come.

Under Sejong's benevolent rule, the kingdom of Korea has flourished technologically and culturally. With the guidance of a shrewd and cunning ruler, Korea may harness this newfound age of progress to establish a long-lasting Northeast Asian empire. At the same time, rumors from Ming China tell of a vast, open continent across the great eastern ocean. Perhaps Korea's true destiny lies across the sea, instead?

The islands to the far south are rich and lay divided between numerous petty sultanates and kingdoms. If an expedition were to be mounted to conquer the islands in the name of Korea, the kingdom has the potential to grow rich off the abundant trade passing through the archipelago.

Despite the chaos caused by the collapse of the Yuan Dynasty in China, Korea remains a tributary of the far more affluent Ming Dynasty. The Chinese Empires have held hegemony over Korea for countless centuries, now may be the time to break the status quo and install a Korean emperor on the Dragon Throne.

An index with links to each text in the first post would be most helpful :)

Also @Uebeltank Denmark already has a startup screen as you can see in the posted list :)

Korea
Korea

50 years have passed since Yi Seong-gye overthrew Goryeo dynasty and carved his own dynasty Joseon. At 1444, Joseon is under a golden age with the reign of king Do who is better known as Sejong the great. Various scientific and cultural innnovations were made and Korean alphabet Hanguel is representative of those. In the means of diplomatic relation and military, Korea is in a stable state as Sejong managed to cover various threats, but there are some still remaining.

North of Korea territory lies Manchu plains where various Jurchen tribe lives. There has been many conflicts with these people throughout the history from small raid to a huge war that is enough to decide country's fate. Last decades were fortunate for Korea as Sejong drove off Jurchen people living in Yukjin area at 1432 and established 4 gun 6 jin year after to colonize these land and make it Korean's. Jurchen tribes may look weak individually, but we know there lies much potential in united Jurchen. Great empire like Jin dynasty could rise again from them and Korea must be vigilant to prevent these things from happening.

Coastal provinces and occasionally inlands of Korea suffered from Japanese pirate Wokou for a long time. Because of these, Sejong launched Gihae Eastern Expedition(Oei invasion) to strike Wokou's homeport Daemado(Tsushima island). Last year, Gyehae treaty was made and Daemado's Sō clan were allowed to trade with Joseon in exchange for forbidding piracy. However, we still view them as pirates and we doubt this is the end of confliict between Japanese. If we truly beleive this is end of their piracy we could abolish empty island policy and claim vast islands of south.

Realationship between Joseon and Ming is in a good shape and Ming has no interest in conquering Joseon's land as long as Joseon keeps tributing and follows Ming's will. They might help us in times of dire needs if things go very well. However there are some quarrels left between two countries and things could change if Korea plans to attack Liadong which was planned for several times during last century. If Joseon is thinking of claiming long forgotten lands of ancestors or going for dragon throne, the war between Ming is inevitable.

=========================================================================================================================================

Backgorund: Jurchen - Korea constantly attacked Jurchen tribe untill Japanese invasions of Korea(1592). There are so many cases for this so I couldn't list them all.
PS: Chinese don't use Manchu as location but Korea is. But this could be a problem.

Japan - Early wokou's invasion is not only limited to coastal provinces of Goryeo.
Originally only 60 Japanese peoples were allowed to live in limited place of Korea as merchant. However it increased to 2000 and this thing happened (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_riots_in_Southeast_Korea_(1510)). After that there is Japanese invasion.
abolishing empty isalnd policy: Made that up as an game guide. Since this policy was made because of pirates.

Liaodong- 1. 1370 Goryeo attacked Yuan and occupied Liaodong for a short time.
2. 1388 Goryo tried to attack Ming but Yi Seong-gye who led the army turned back and held a coup.
3. 1398 Joseon's prime minister Jeong Dojeon planned to attack Liadong. Yi Bang-won killed him and stop the plan during 1st revolt of the prince.
Simyang(Liaodong area) and Korea was under personal union during king Chungseon's era(1275~1325) and Simyang's other kings were also Korean.(Lasted until 1376) Some records even say large portion of population were Korean at these times.(1464).

Some records even say large portion of population were Korean at these times.(1464).
This should be out as when Goryeo was retreating from Liaodong they brought back most of Korean population.

This should be out as when Goryeo was retreating from Liaodong they brought back most of Korean population.

I don't know whether you're Korean or not but I was referencing this record(http://sillok.history.go.kr/id/kga_11008001_002). It's not official census but at least this is suitable for a source that some Korean guy living in that era claimed it. (If you're not Korean, the guy in that record is claiming 30% of population living in Liaodong is Korean and telling we should care for them. )

Source of these population: At 1383 guy named 胡拔都 abducted many of Korea people. These people are called mansangun(만산군; 漫散軍). At 1402 many of these guys return to Joseon during chaos of Jingnan Campaign. However, Yongle Emperor forced Joseon to return them to Ming's land and Joseon sent them back and number of these on the records are over 10,000.

I don't think '30% of population in Liaodong is Korean' proposition is true. But I think it's quite true that there were some Korean people living there in large numbers.(At least ten thousand)

Majapahit
Majapahit

In 1293, Kublai Khan of Mongols Yuan dynasty sent a massive expedition of 20,000-30,000 soldiers to Java in order to punish King Kertanagara of Singhasari, who had insulted his ambassador few years before. However, the said king had already died by then, in a rebellion led by Jayakatwang just a year prior.

By allying himself to the punitive army, Sanggramawijaya, Kertanegara’s son-in-law, managed to destroy Jayakatwang. Afterwards, by launching a surprise attack to his former ally, he managed to force their withdrawal from Java. Sanggramawijaya was then enthroned as Kertarajasa Jayawardhana, the first king of Majapahit, securing Rajasa dynasty’s rule over Java for the centuries to come as the continuation of Singhasari.

Later, Majapahit reached its golden era in the reign of Rajasanagara, the fourth Majapahit king and Kertarajasa’s grandson. Majapahit’s territory included most of Indonesian archipelago, Malay Peninsula, and part of Philipines at the time.

Following Rajasanagara’s death in 1389, Majapahit entered a decline period with conflict over succession. Especially after the Paregreg War in 1405-1406, the civil war between the western and eastern courts of Majapahit, which has left the empire in a devastated state and has allowed its vassals outside Majapahit’s core in Central and East Java to release themselves from Majapahit’s grip.

Now in 1444, surrounded by the rising Islamic sultanates that come to power in the region, it is up to Queen Suhita and her brother (heir) Kertawijaya to lead their weakened nation back to its former glory.

PS. sorry if my english is bad

I reckon Aragon and Venice as well.

I was about to suggest we post a list of important countries that aren't on the original list - those that are reasonably large and/or interesting to play, to focus on first, instead of potentially getting overwhelmed with a lot of fairly unimportant OPMs and the like. At the moment, though, most of the suggestions have been for countries I would list. Give me a bit and I'll create a suggested focus list for countries.

So here is a suggested list of important/interesting countries we should likely focus on. @CheesySnake , if you want to cut and paste this list to the top post, and mark them off as suggestions are made, go right ahead. And anyone who wants to suggest additions/deletions, please do so as well!
