Starting EU2 in Win2k

Ok. I think I have read all the messages in the forum thoroughly.

I have an Inspiron 8100 with 256M of memory and a Pentium IV processor, plenty of free HD space. I have Norton 2002 installed. I have an ATI Radeon all-in-one card. I am running win2k with service pack 2.

- I have uninstalled old Nvidia drivers
- I have disabled my NAV 2002 (I even tried uninstalling it)
- I have shut off auto play (by pressing SHIFT) as i entered the CD for the game
- I have checked direct x everything is working fine, all the tests passed.
- I have tried renaming the AVI directory
- I have take out my CD-R drive from d and put it to e, putting a plain cd drive in d.

Still when I click on the icon for eu2, the computer acts as if something might happen, then NOTHING happens.

I also noticed something odd. Even though it is doing nothing, when I press CNTR-ALT-DEL, EU2.exe is not listed in the application window but in process window. It also takes up varying amounts of memory while it is running.

What the hell do I have to do to run this game. I liked the first version EU I but i am really pissed now. What do I do?

I think it could be copy protection. What is your CD-ROM brand?

And try something:
go the device manager (control panel, system), IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers and double click on the controller to wich your CD-ROM is attached (if you don't know, do it for both), advance settings and you'll see "transfer mode" for Device 0 and Device 1.

For "Primary IDE Channel", "Device 1": change transfer mode to "PIO only"

For "Secondary IDE Channel", "Device 0&1": change transfer mode to "PIO only"

Of course, if you know where your CD-ROM is, just do it only once for the correct controller.

Both cdroms are in PIO mode.

The CD ROM is a simple PANASONIC drive. What do I do now?

I'm assuming you have the North American version of the game since you are in Canada, so you'll have to e-mail Strategy First at nyared@strategyfirst.com. Point him to this thread and tell him you have a copy protection problem; he will be able to help you (he might ask you for a proof of purchase, so have your bill ready).

I think I might have the same problem on the benelux version with win2k (get a black screen).
I did the following in the task manager kill the bink process swith back to EU then go back to task manager and kill the bink application. Closed the task manager and it ran.
Is there an easier way?

Renaming the AVI Folder should do it.

Only pity I will never see the intro or victory movie.
