I've heard that non-European nations have severe restrictions placed on them, should you want to play them. My question is, if I steal a European tag and give it to someone in, say East Asia, will those restrictions still be there?

Changing a dozen different things in a dozen different places doesn't intimidate me, but I wanna know first if it's possible to get a non-European country to be playable, or I won't bother.

But according to what Gen. Suvorov said, I'm thinking these restrictions are hard-coded based on the region that the nation's in rather than its tag. In that case, I guess I shouldn't bother. Damn. I hope EU2 will be different.

I want to make my own fantasy nation. I want to start out owning all of Java (4 provs I think) and see if I can keep the spices away from the dirty Europeans. But I want to be able to explore and colonize too.

Pagans and techonolgy

If you use a scenario generator to make pagans playable, or the ICG for that matter, you will have to use the fantasia rule set to play, not normal settings. Under normal settings, pagans cannot upgrade anything. This is the primary reason I used fantasia settings for my scenario Heathens Unite! in the depot. I was not about to make heathen nations some other religion so they could upgrade.

Okay, so...if I use the fantasia setting, and I lift some European tag (like Malta or something) and give it the starting provinces I mentioned (all of Java island), will I be able to explore (with Explorers and Conq. of course), colonize (with appropriate colonial dynamic settings), build walls, upgrade infrastructure, etc?

Yes, yes, yes and yes.

Some things to keep in mind with fantasia settings, though.

1) Colonists and merchants will be 6 a year for every country in the game, reagardless. There will be no increase in the number of merchants you can get based on CoTs, monopolies, etc.

2) Since it is fantasia settings, all armies and fleets can explore. If they dont have a conquistador or explorer, they just suffer alot of attrition. This is regardless of technology level.

3) I suggest using Monteczuma's Scenario generator. It is a big help. Also, you can use any number of nations and tags, but because it is fantasia rules, you might find the world explored within 100 years. With every nation exploring and swapping maps, there is nowhere to hide by 1650.

4) Under fantasia settings, colonization is generally cheaper and easier. The provinces which would normally have negative population growth may end up with a decent amount of population growth under fantasia rules.

5) With fantasia rules, countries can make non-historical religion changes. This wont be a problem, as the AI wont do them non-historical changes. But if you play the papacy, you could convert to Islam or even heathenism.

Just some things to keep in mind.

Ah, so the fantasia setting opens up a whole big can-of-worms, eh? That's okay, it's not as if I'd be expecting anything remotley historical while trying to build an Indonesian based world power anyway.

Thanks for the info!

I often use the scenario generator when im really really bored and need a good laugh.. imagine Spain stuck on Hawaii without being able to do shit :D

Heh. Now, do you play Spain on Hawaii yourself, or do you just stick the Spain AI out there just cause they pissed you off last game?? :D

No problem Treedom

However, if your looking for a really fun game, try this and see how it works for you.

If you grab Moteczuma's scenario generator in the scenario depot, use the following settings for a truly random, bizarre game.

1) Set it to use every single tag available to the game.

2) Randomize goods in provinces

3) Randomize the prices of goods.

4) Randomize the placement of nations.

5) Give everyone equal realtions.

6) Put everyone in the latin technology group, with equal starting tech.

7) Sit back and enjoy the show.

Take it from me, there is nothing more amusing that watching the Huguenots and Mysore as neighbors in the Caribbean, fighting over provinces that continue grain... which is priced at 15 ducats!
