I downloaded Rome gold from steam and I am having a lot of crashing issues. The game will crash randomly and every time I exit the game a windows error message pops up. Then I have to verify the integrity of the files and steam downloads around 50mb every time. This "update" has erased some of my saved games or if I play the last save the game freezes. So basically I can't save games and I cannot play a whole game through. If someone esle has experience with this issue or can maybe offer some tips i would appreciate it. I will post specs or dxdiag if needed.

Can you post the exact text of teh Windows error you mention please.

Please run DXDIAG, Save All Info, and post dxdiag.txt here (first delete everything after the Sound Devices section so it will fit). Also post your Rome/settings.txt and Rome/logs/system.log files. Note that if you use Vista and have installed the game in the suggested folder c:\Program Files\Paradox Interactive\Rome\, the active versions of these last two files will have been redirected by Vista to a non-system directory, like c:\users\[name]\appdata\local\virtualstore\Program Files\Paradox Interactive\Rome\. You may have to search your C: drive for them.

Windows error: Rome has stopped working. Windows is searcging for a solution. Every time I quit the game. Maybe I should never quit?:D
Correct observation - that one happens to us all. :D

As Peter says, the crash on exit is common but not known to cause the kind of corruption you are seeing. I recommend a complete reinstall into a new directory: First move any valued save games elsewhere. Then uninstall the game, and then manually delete the game directory - this is important. Reinstall Rome - choose a new directory like c:\games\rome instead of the suggested path. I'm not sure if Steam's Rome:Gold includes the 2.1 patch, if not apply that to the same new directory.

Now before you play for the first time, edit c:\games\rome\settings.txt and change multisampling=0 .

Thanks for the tips. I reinstalled the game. You cannot change the directory for steam games. They have to be saved in the steam apps folder or they will not work. The game is version 2.1. I just tried a game and it ctd in about 30 min. I then verified the integrity of the game cache and steam downloaded around 50 mb of data. Is it a steam issue maybe? I haven't had any issues with any other games on my computer. Hopefully we an get it working because I really enjoy the game but it is unplayable right now. Any other tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I noticed some other posters mentioned that their error log had entries. There are a bunch in mine log. Could that be a problem. This is after 3rd clean install.

Well yes, that does look very bad, it is beginning to look as if the Steam version of Gold has some problems. What about just after you do the Verify, do you get those same errors? Either way, I'd encourage you to contact Steam on the issue.

I wonder if they would consider allowing you to download plain Rome and then VV instead of Rome Gold?

I've posted this elsewhere, but just want to make sure people see it.. I also have this exact issue, didn't try to verify the integrity (but trying to now, and it downloads something now).
I think it's proper that PI contacts Steam and not the users, as it's a game distribution problem, and not something we did wrong, or our systems.
Please, sort it out somehow...

(Seems to be less rewarding to buy the game rather than pirate it..then companies complain)

Actually it would be better if both were to happen, so please keep up pressure on Steam (ha!), which can then pass it on to PI. Meanwhile one Gamers Gate customer reports they gave him access to separate Rome/VV downloads and they worked fine, so see if Steam will do that for you too.

I have the Steam Gold version of Rome and I was just getting crashes at the end of the game when I quit but now I am getting crashes when starting a saved game approx 2 minutes after starting it. Seems to be crashing a the same place every time. IS there anyway to claim money back from a Steam purchase? If this crash goes on I will be wanting my money back.

Nats, if it is the same game and it seems to crash every time at a specific date a short time after start, you might want to check the savegame to see if it is this known bug that troubles you. (I'm not sure it can even happen in VV, but the thread is still stickied, so might be worth a try)

You'd have to ask them that, not sure why you'd be asking Paradox this question.

Thanks for the help but it seems that I have got past the problem after a few crashes and I have not crashed again for a few days. It could have well been due to Barbarians trying to take a couple of Roman provinces as they were invading at the time of the crash. But I resaved the game nearer to when it was due to crash, it crashed once. I then went to Steam and reininilaised my files or something and it hasnt crashed since. Not sure what exactly I did but it seems to have worked.

But this does highlight an issue with Steam games - that you cant easily return them if they dont work unlike a normal game purchased from Game etc. There seems to be no one to argue with and the Steam return policy is very strict!! I will be bearing this in mind in future and not getting any more Steam games if I can help it. I like to at least have a game I can sell if I get fed up with it and make some money back on the purchase. Sort of dont mind with Rome as it was pretty cheap and its a good game actually but I wont be downloading anything else from now on.
