So I played a pretty long running game year was 2563 before I rage quit this nonsense but I went from the top galactic power to utter trash. I went ahead and throughout the game focused on upgrading beam weaponry, shields and armor for my fleets. Well at year 2400 I had Titans and was ruling high and mighty. 2452 was when I met something of a problem. I went to war with a galactic civilization that just wouldn't open their borders and I really wanted to go kill the Ether Drake. I sent a fleet with 110k fleet power in and was chewing through Starbase left and right then I saw a fleet approach me. 80k nothing but hundreds of corvettes. I laughed even as I was amazed at their sheer number but I had 30k power more than them and my ships would vaporize them individually if need be, they had enough hull, shields, armor and weaponry to take them. Right? Wrong. They swarmed my vessels losing less than half their numbers. So I talked to the community and whined about how that makes Titans literally irelavent?! Most helpful response back? "Shrugs" That's Stellaris for ya. So, I pool everything together and go on the defensive since I surrounded my borders with citadels all with between 70k and 68k military power each with 4 defense platforms and 3 ion cannons. Now I know the only strategy in the game and begin spamming Corvettes since that is the only viable option meanwhile I also have high enough research and think. "Hmmm... since I am building these Corvettes I sure ought to be upgrading other weapons and defenses." So I begin working on Thrusters, Missiles and torpedoes. Then I notice all my stations need an upgrade so I do it because a swarm of Corvettes is coming. Set them all to upgrade go and throw a bag of popcorn in the microwave since the upgrades take a sec. Come back, put a mug of coffee to the left, my popcorn to the right glance at the upgrades. Stations are at 30k, tell the cat to stop meowing at the bac... 30k... 30K!!! Look at all of my newly upgraded stations all between 30 and 28k. Swarm still coming. Look at one of my stations get engulfed. Ion cannons just sit there doing nothing. Look closer at station all ion cannons no longer have weapons all power focused on armor and NEW FREAKING SHIELDS!!! WHY IS THE A.I. SETTING ION CANNONS TO FOCUS ON SHIELDS?! So, I quietly looked to reload not far enough back and wanna know the only way to get achievements? Ironman mode. Wanna know the only way I play? Ironman mode. Wanna know how quickly they swept through my systems killing everything no matter how quickly I disbanded the absolutely pointless Ion cannons for more defense platforms? At year 2563 I gave it up for a lost cause. Corvette spam is the only viable offense nullifying all other ships so my fleets all died. Getting rid of all of my ion cannons was like getting punched in the groin since they are slow to build and cost 2k alloys a piece and I had a lot of them. And so here I have arrived since I now know the most irritating gaming experience of the year that I have had. Please. I don't know what you guys will or even can do to fix the upgrading system of the game or the purely pointless ships like Titans. But do something because the game is fun when its fun but moments like these make me overly angry at the amount of money I spent on the game and all of it's DLC.

Can you set specific upgrades on console? I didn't see an option and would have been more than happy to do it manually.
for ship designer, yep
for other stuff, not as of yet

so when you are in the ship designer tab there is an option that is selected by default "Auto-Generate Designs", turn that off and then you can customize ships freely
leave the auto-upgrade option selected as that is useful

some tech won't upgrade into your ships because it is dangerous technology or rare/crisis technology so you have to put that in yourself, but otherwise any weapons/other stuff you put into your ship design will upgrade as your research the tech

you'll have to tell your fleet to upgrade and as long as you have the resources it will upgrade [this also applies to any defense platforms or ion cannons built on stations]

you can change weapons around later if you want (be it because you got better tech or the tech you needed/wanted unlocked)
