I have twice psoted this letter to support.se@panvision.com. Has the tech support ceased to work?

Dear Tech Support

Thank you for your part in making the lovely “Hearts of Iron” a workable game.

I have managed to get the 1.02 HoI version to work but not the 1.03 version. The one I tried with was HoI_1.03b_EU_ENG_Update.exe

"The error I get is that no program seems to start at all. Looking at the task manager, however, indicates that a program is running in the background, but it is not possible to get in. The only thing I can do ist to terminate the game.

I have a PII processor 333 MHz, a Western Digital 4.3 Gb hard disk, a Prographics AGP 4 (Mb) graphics card, four S/D Ram 32 Mb/100hz for a total of 128 Mb RAM and a Sound Blaster Pro sound card. I run the program on Win95. (Yeah, I know, that program makes Moamar Ghaddaffi mental state seem stable by comparison, but I am not complaining about lack of stability, I am complaining that the program does not run at all besides the game claims you can run it on Win 95.)"

Tried and failed

I tried your suggested solution twice. First just installing the HoI 1.03b over the old version. It failed in precisely the same way it had failed previously. I remove all HoI components and tried again. It failed again in precisely the same way.

I have never renewed my graphics card driver. I entered Prographics homepage under drivers and downloads without finding anything matching the description from my receipt: "Prographics, 3D, AGP 4 Mb".

:(

I do not even see that hey make video cards. Are you sure that they are the manufactors of your card?

What version of DirectX are you running?

(Castellon: ProGraphics AGP cards are quite old - i.e. >5 yrs but after some searching I found a couple 3rd party drivers for it but none of them is 100% compatible with DirectX 8.0 - let alone 8.1 or later - so my guess is that this is at issue)

Thanks for the tip MrT, I New it sounded familiar, but I was not sure if it was just a model produced by one of the major producers.

Do this:

Start-->Run-->dxdiag.exe

This will launch the DirectX diagnostic tool and will display all relevent info.

Try turning the sound off in the HOI config program.

This is from the Sys. Req. Thread

Windows 95: The game should run on windows 95 with DirectX ver8.0a, however it's recommended you set your music to OFF using the HOI Settings file. You can always play the mp3s with Winamp in the background anyway, so this shouldn't be too big a loss.

Tried and failed

I have tried to install HoI 1.03b over the current installation. Installation went fine and I made sure music was off. The game wouldn't started. Exactly the same error as previously described. The game starts but I cannot enter it. I can olny see it in file manager.

Did you install to the default directory?

Is there any way you could shuffle some files around to make enough space on your C drive? I'm not convinced that it will solve the problem though.

Just going back to your DirectX installation again, could you please do the following:

1. Go to Start-->Run-->dxdiag.exe

2. There should be a tab near the bottom of the page that says "Save all Information". Click on this.

3. It will ask you where you want to save the file. Pick anywhere that's convenient (maybe your desktop temporarily). This will save the full dxdiag output as a text file (txt).

4. Use Notepad or Wordpad to open this text file and paste the information here please so Castellon and I can have a really detailed look at your resident drivers and associations. The problem might be visible there.

Don't worry that this will probably be a long post you put up. It's just that it will give us some very important info to look at that would otherwise take you a very long time to check and type out for us.

Also note that it might take us a little time to digest the info after you've posted it. Don't despair, though. If it's possible to run it on your system we'll figure out how. :)

Here you go

Ah! your video card is actually an S3 Virge, Now that one is a well known card. I will see if I can find a better driver for you, however it is very old so I doubt it.

I also note that it looks like you've got a joystick attached and running. Removing it might help.

Also try reducing or turning off the harware sound acceleration since your older system may not eb able to handle the load.

Edit: you also have a number of invalid registry entries so you might want to run a registry cleaning utility to get rid of those (although I doubt that's at fault).

No knowledge of such things

I have no idea what a sound accelarator hardware is. I have no idea where I can find a register cleanup utility. I do get register messages when I start the program which is quite annoying but have failed to find out how to get rid of them.
