I've started a new game and my ruler died in battle in his first campaign in 1071. At the time he had one daughter, a bun in the oven, and no cadet line. I had selected salic law so a country cousin with horrible, horrible stats took over rather than the game ending. A few months later a son was born to the original ruler's pregnant wife.

Is there some way for me to have the son of the preceding ruler become the heir of the country cousin? After the kid was born, I clicked on the cousin but the kid is not listed as a successor. But then again the cousin wasn't listed as a successor either until the ruler's death.......if the cousin never marries and produces heirs and dies will the direct dynasty regain control of its provinces?

Thank you in advance for reading another of my questions. I suspect that the original dynasty can never get back into power, but if anyone actually knows the answer, it would help me move on and decide whether to get the cousin a wife or not.

Most likely no. The country counsin continues the name, but is not "related" to the old ruler, thus the young son is not in the line of successon as he is seen as not of the same family.

But you could give him a bunch of titles (eventually) and then reload as him, and then polt to take back your rightful throne from the "usurper" :)

'In-Game' you are really limited to ways to get the original family back in power. You could institue Elective Law (assuming you are a Duke/King), load that kid up with enough titles to make him at the head of the list.
(Edited - I have no idea why Draztikus's post didn't show for me earlier, as this is exactly what he said)

Or, have your Country Cousin marry the previous Ruler's wife, and hope he has sons. His first born son will inherit him, but when this new son inherits and has no sons, his elder 'half-brother' (and his sons after him) should be first Heir. Without going into the game and checking, I think the Eldest brother's line always has first dibs. There's a lot of 'ifs' there, of course. :)

TempestDK's method would probably be the safest (and more role-playing) way.

For that to work I think he would have to institute semi-salic inheritance law, as the half-brothers are only linked through their mother, and in salic law, inheritance is never traced through the female line.

I have a question regarding succesion - I am playing as Croatia and my current king has 50 years and only 3 daughters. He inherited the crown from his uncle (his fathers brother) who only had one daughter. That daughter eventually had one son (after two daughters). There are no other relatives to my king. I toyed around with succesion laws but couldnt make him heir. Is there some law that would enable him to succed so that I can continue playing?

I assume elective law could work if I gave that child a lot of titles, even though he has no prestige or martial currently.

Since that son will be of a different dynastie it will be game over for you if you are able to make him your heir.

If there is no heir listed at all, the game will create one when your current ruler dies so it won't be game over then. This character (a 'country cousin') will have the same dynastie-name as your previous ruler but otherwise will not be related to him, he also will start with -50 prestige and his stats will be low.

This is something that I have yet to try. How do you reload the same game as a different person? What needs to be changed in what files? I did some poiking around in the DNA, etc a long time ago and I recall it was a bit tricky to find things from one file to the next...

Nothing. When you reload any game, the realm from the save game is selected by default, but you can easily just change the realm you load as.

1. Select the save game in the list
2. Click on another realm in the realm lists, and click load.

What a good idea. I have actually wondered what to do with the ability to load as a different realm. Now this really adds to the role playing idea AND adds action. Nice.
