Succession window not showing, but game paused while it's "open"

Description​

My landless adventurer character died during a camp hunt, causing a succession. The succession window didn't open, however the game is perpetually paused and the following message displays: "You can view, but not affect the game while the Succession window is open".

My new character appears bottom left and despite the message I can choose a lifestyle and spend money on camp upgrades, however I cannot unpause.

Steps to reproduce​

Suspect it's having your character die while at a camp event.

Had the same with succession as Byzantine emperor dying during a hunt

I also have the same issue. My landless adventurer died during a hunt and then I was stuck on the screen with the same message.

I also experenced this after dying on a hunt as the byzantine emperor. The succession window opened just fine, but the forced pause won't go away even though I can still do stuff like queue up buildings and declare wars.

Same issue here. It's happened twice. First time I was killed my a white boar. Both in Iron Man.

If you died during a hunt, you hopefully have enough money saved to initiate a new hunt with the player heir (you can do that even though the game forcefully remains paused). This should trigger the outcome of the old event where your predecessor died and make the "succession window" show up. It's a terrible workaround, but seemingly the only solution at the moment.

Player character died during a hunt, heir took over but with the same issue with the succession window. Sold some items to try another hunt to try the workaround. But it had no effect.

I have this issues while my adventurer who turned emperor died in event while doing journey around the kingdom and now Im stuck. And ofc its ironman so can't take older save.

So I had the same issue, player died by falling off a horse while on a hunt. And my 17 year old heir was stuck in succession window.


FIX - Start a new hunt. It works indeed. That is if you have enough money.

Luckily he didn't die too.

Hello ! I have the samed problem. In Ironman mode, my character died during a hunt and the succession window didn't open when I switched to his son. I can't interact with the game and unpause. Aparently, some people were able to debug by starting a new hunt. The problem is, my new character - the son of the one who died - was also part of the hunt. So he is stuck over there and I cannot make any decisions to unlock the game since he is already traveling. What should I do ? I can't play anymore...

I have the same problem. But my heir is a child, so I cannot start a new hunt

Bottom-left corner, click the event Icon, this re-opens the event which you can then proceed in the scenario which then allows you to view the succession screen and continue.

I followed someone's advice above about getting my heir to start a hunting event first (which didn't rectify the issue), and it was then I noticed the event icon still available above my character despite travelling, so you may actually need to start that, or you may not need to... either way, the way to get out of it is that icon.
