Sudden Exit To Windows Desktop

Hi,
I have this problem:
the game often crashes and comes back to windows desktop. It always happens when the special event window appear and i have to
choose one of the possibilities: I point the mouse on the one i want to choose and then i am on my desktop.
This does not occur all the time an event appears but in some occasions (e.g. Russia to recover Byzanthium eredity or not) the crash is
impossible to avoid.
I have the Italian version of the game and I have installed 1.07 patch. My PC configuration is:
Athlon XP 200+
Windows XP
Direct X 9
InVidia Geforce 4 (latest drivers)
256 MB RAM
