I've just started playing and I'm using the 1.04 patch. Everything was going fine until I declared war on a country and invaded, the combat started and before it finished the "you surrendered" screen pops up like I quit the game? So I try again, same thing... only this time it does it before the combat actually shows on the small screen.
OK I try invading a different Country, this time it's a siege, I watch the seige on the small screen and as the status bar moves along, gets near the end......."you surrendered" pops up again? it's working like a CTD every time I go into combat, I've tried loads of times now, the battles either never progress or dont start? the whole combat scenario triggers the quit screen any ideas?

Not really sure I understand, but I think I am going to have to suggest a reinstall.

Also these tips.:
1) Make sure you have the latest patch for the game.
2) Rename the AVI folder to AVI_back
3) Set the color depth to 16BIT
4) Turn off everything in the background like E-mail/ICQ/Messenger, Virus protection and everything in the system tray beside the clock.
5) Update your Windows, update your Video card drivers and audio card drivers. Then repeat steps 1-3.

Just an idea...

This sounds as if your ruler dies without a dynasty heir. Can you check if your rulers has a heir of the same dynasty as he?

Castellon, thanks for the quick reply, I'll try a reinstall and your list and see how it goes. Yes it's hard to explain I've seen plenty of CTD's in games but none where you get a CTQ ( crash to quit screen)

Are the kids his heir? I am just trying to rule out a possibility. If you have e.g. elective succession laws, having kids does not mean they are the designated heirs.

Havard, let me try to reinstall anyway and I'll get back to you, my feeling is theres something wrong by the way I've seen it happen, when I go into combat I've seen it straight away before the animations take place on the small screen, then I 've seen it halfway through combat, when I was winning, and again during a seige as I watched the status bar go to red then ....surrender!, I've never seen a battle that ends? the way it triggers either before of halfway through combat looks wrong to me.

Havard, seems like you are right, I did a reinstall as per Castellons directions and as a test I started as Malcolm of Scotland on the first turn I invaded Plasencia with my own army. OK I watch the siege and when I still have 920 men the siege looks in full swing green status bar halfway... the you surrender screen pops in, maybe because I have no experience of EU games this looks odd to me as Ive no idea I'm losing the battle and thats it?
Anyway I start again this time I send armies of 4 vassals and stay at home, this time all the battle scenarios play out fully and win or lose at least I see the ends of them. It still seems odd to me the way that screen kicks in, in the middle of something.

Still not even sure what you guys are talking about, but as long as it is working now. :)

Well if you start as Malcolm Dunkeld King of Scotland in 1066 you have 3 sons already as your heir plus a brother, so if even if your king Malcolm dies in battle you shouldn't see the surrender screen, it would be weird that they all died before you.

When you are at war, are your provinces being besieged to ? If that is the case and all those sieges are succesfull, all your demesne is taken, then you also get the surrender screen.

Try another ruler to start and see what happens then.

Veldmaarschalk, No I'm playiing as Malcolm in the third crusade scenario, so he starts on his own. I've started a new game, plus some experimenting and the previous post was what was wrong I just did'nt realise what was happening  erm.. I'm kind of getting the hang of it now.

Oh so this does not happen to you every battle just occasionally?

When I was on my first game it happened straight away when I went into combat, so I replayed invading the same place and one other a further 5 times and it happened every time (when I sent my own army with my character in it), being a noob I'm still experimenting on how to do the movements etc, anyway thats when I assumed there was something wrong, as I said, because the surrender screen seems to appear right in the middle of a battle even if I was winning it and the status bar is green, seemed like it was a fault, I had no idea that was the end of my dynasty. It would be much clearer if it was shown my character had died in action, then on to the surrender screen. Now that it's been pointed out thats what is happening, I'm more protective of the characters. Anyway as it's no longer a technical issue fell free to delete the thread if you like. :)

Okay, as long as it all worked out. :)
