Description
Savegame Crash to Desktop + Crash to Desktop by full zoom out

Windows

Steam

What is your game version?
1001586

Do you have Space Race installed?
Yes

Please explain your issue is in as much detail as possible.
I've a very big colony with over 20.000 colonists. If I zoom out the CPU and GPU goes to 100% and the game crashes to desktop without any error report. The game also damages my last 5 to 10 savegames, with no reason, first time the issue (crash to desktop) occurred the last 10 savegames (100 sols !!!!) were damaged, and loading any of them results in a crash to desktop as well, after a short loading time. now i've played 30 sols from sol 1155 to sol 1185, same thing without crash the last 5 savegames (10 sols) are damaged and not loadabel.

I've put in my colony a lot of love + time and i will go further, cause its running realy nice and smooth, i've fixed all problems at sol 1255 and the colony was going realy well, so it is realy disapointing that the game crashes by zooming out, but more disapointing that 8 hours of work are gone cause the savegames are damaged as well. I looking forvard to a good solution from you pro guys ;-) :)

No Mods istalled

DLC's :

- Colony Design Set
- Green Planet
- Marsvision Song Contest
- Mysteries Resupply Pack
- Project Laika
- Season Pass
- Space Race

My System:

AMD Ryzen 5 2600X Six-Core (overclock to 4,2 Ghz to get a (nearly) liquid gameplay in surviving mars)
16 GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 Super
Game on own HD seperated from the Win system

Things done:

Overclockt CPU
All drivers updated
Reinstalled the game
-> First try -> deinstalled and installed with Steam
-> 2nd try -> deinstalled with revo deinstaller and installed new over steam (incl. deleting everything)
Run game as Admin
Run game in Comp Mode for win 7 and as admin also
Put the game .exe on withelist of my antivirus
Disabeld the savegame cloud upload to steam

Issue takes place in Full HD and 4K also

all this things are doesnt help to fix the both issues

it would be very great if you guys can give me a workaorund or we find a solution in the communitiy to fix this. I think if i can go on, the colony will go up to 30-40.000 colonists and i realy want to get "metroplois" ready on mars. :)

last broken savegame and some screenshots from the error below attached. shortly after i've taken the both screenshots from the colony the game crashes, but taken the screenshot sometimes works, sometime the game crahes bevor i can enter the photoeditor.

Best regards
Pulsar

Can you replicate the issue?
see description above, it is a repeating issue

Yes, thats the issue.... with the savegames, the other issue is a system thing, i dont belive that the same issue with zooming out + crash, occurres if you do it. ;-)
I need to know wahts wrong with the game or my settings, cause the game highest system requirmets are a Core I5, maybe it needs a Intel processor only and AMD doesnt work, i dont know.....maybe the game doesnt supports this huge population of people....???
And i can life with out full zoom, but that my saves become broken is very annoying.

I do suspect you've exceeded the design limits of the game, or at least the colony size it's ever been tested with.

I didn't quite get the bit with the save games though. Are you saying that a crash while playing corrupted previous saved games that had been okay? If so it's hard to see how that is possible ... !

Please attach here the latest (ONLY!) game log file, from here:
C:\Users\{Username}\AppData\Roaming\Surviving Mars\logs\
To see the AppData folder you'll need to enable View Hidden Items in File Explorer.

Plus, DXDIAG is a program you run from the Windows search box on the task bar. After running it will open a window and start collecting info with a progress bar in the lower-left corner. When it completes click the 'save all information' button and save it to a file then attach that file here.

I've seen 13K~ unmodded, but you're the first 20K I've seen (which is why I wanted the save).
Yes i guess that ;-) but this is my save m8 ;-) there are 141 hours in it, and 3 restarts ( 12k, 15k, 17k) to get here, so i cant give this away.... i put it to 22 K ... and Metropolis runs very fine now B-) .... crashes included.... ;-).. I've two 22k savegames now, so I'm fine. :) B-) and yes unmodded, only thing is free build and it isn't in creativ mode.

Are you running the game in Windows 8 compatibility mode?
*** OS info
OS: Windows 8
Version: 6.2.9200
If so can I ask why? There's no need to do that.

And was that log taken just after one of these crashes? As it shows no problem.

At the end of that dxdiag we see 3 separate types of crashes in MarsSteam.exe , which is pretty unusual for any sort of code bug. How much memory is the game taking up with this save loaded?

The last night I had various crashes, it end up with the shut down of my graphic card (blackscreens). After takening back the overclocking (CPU+GPU) Surviving Mars only starts with Win 8 Comp mode. I just tested it, now it runs without Win 8 Comp mode, but I installed the hole game new. The game crashes without Comp mode also.
Maybe good to know, I run a System with three screens, two full HD, one 4K resolution.

Memory taken with last savegame -> 22.1K colonists, zoomed in 1.55-1.66 GB / CPU load 65-89% (Tabed out to desktop / Tab in game) / GPU Load 55%-75% (Tabed out to desktop / Tab in game) .....
...the more I zoom out the CPU and GPU load rises until the game crashes, memory load stays even. Last Log file attached. there is no information in the log file when the game crashes. So i attached the crash reports too. I've also a log file from the last 7 hours of gaming yesterday until the blackscreen crash, but the file ist 151 MB huge.

Best
Pulsar :)

P.S. : It looks like the game doesnt save any autosave, yesterday i had some luck, the only autosaves that are been over are the last autosave, if the game doesnt do that i'd lost one more time 6 Hours. I switched the Autosave count in the settings from 2 to 1 and to autosave every 2 sols. screenshots to that also attached. the last issue that occured was yesterday that the last 5 savegames wasnt loadabel. atm all is fine. thx for your patient.

As you can see we now get vast numbers of these errors:
[LUA ERROR] HGE::l_GetRandomPassablePoint:
Mars/Lua/MapSettings.lua(403): global GetRandomPassableAround
Mars/Dlc/armstrong/Code/Unit.lua(12): method GoToRandomPosInDome
Mars/Dlc/shepard/Code/Animals.lua(249): method Roam
Mars/Dlc/shepard/Code/Animals.lua(266): <>
[C](-1): global sprocall
CommonLua/Classes/CommandObject.lua(120): <>
--- end of stack
Which is interesting given there were none in the previous log. @ChoGGi_2 will be able to comment more knowledgeably on that error than I, but it looks like a corrupted save game file to me.

It is clear this is not a memory leak due to the huge colony.

I think at this point I'm going to suggest a full clean reinstall of the game:

- move any valued save games elsewhere; they are under
C:\Users\{UserName}\AppData\Roaming\Surviving Mars\{large number}\
- "uninstall" in Steam-Surviving Mars
- manually delete both the Steam/SteamApps/common/Surviving Mars AND C:\Users\{Username}\AppData\Roaming\Surviving Mars\ folders
- re-install game in Steam, run a Steam Verify when done.
- add MarsSteam.exe to the exceptions list/whitelist of your antivirus app
- start the game with no mods active and test

In particular you need to make sure there are no files or folders left under either the Steam SM or AppData SM locations, before installing again.

Now if the save file is corrupted that will not fix it of course - nothing will - but I'm hoping it will stop it happening again.

I'd guess some animals having trouble finding a roaming point in a dome? Either dome is gone or animal is gone and it's stuck in a thread or something looping it?
I doubt that's causing the crash, I'm guessing (since that save file won't load for me); there's just too many objects?

Zipping it will shrink it down to not much.

I assume this is the only game you're having crashes on?

Did this bevor, but did it now again, result.... zoom out crash to desktop :-( .... logfile the same like bevor same errors. Log file is only set if I quit the game by myself. At crash there isnt a logfile thats gonna be saved.
some noteable things:
- the gpu and cpu goes to 100% if i zomm out at max and have a lot of traffic at the screen. if i tab out the cpu an gup load is 30% reduced.
- if i pause the game, same issue
- if i pause the game an go to photo mode, same issue
I know now 22,7 K colonist ist much an the support traffic with 3600 drones an nearly 200 shuttels are massiv and i think thats the reason, maybe the errors to.
If i like to and i have a lot time I will start another city, but i think i will have the same issue, cause this was my 2nd try, i've had already a citiy with 17k colonists, with the same issues. but delete everything cause i was disapointet as hell that the a game that needs a I5 at max. and Win 7 dont runs nicely in the endgame.

I think the only thing I can do is waiting to an update that fixes this issue and i dont think that it has something to do with the animals, the game isnt that smart programmed the it let us build huge cities..... or I need a 10.000 Euro PC. Sad.... :-(

Yes this is the only game i have issues with, rest runs perfectly.... see my post above, i dont think that the crashes only are effected from the animals.... Anyway.... here a last screenshot that I was abel to take yesterday without a crash and with some adjustments in the graphic settings....... and if you like to have the savegame, i send it to you per pm. Maybe you figure something out.

Topic can be closed! thx for you help and patient.... Metropolis will be continued! :)

UPDATE: See below!!!!!

I guess SM is a good stresser for video cards, huh... Good to know you found the problem.

I wouldn't mind the save file if you don't mind (you can email@choggi.org if you prefer or pm whatever works). I like huge saves without mods to stress test my mods (biggest I got now is 10.5K colonists). Yours looks like it'd do the trick nicely ;)

UPDATE!!! : Same Issue, with new graphic card, game crashes to desktop, savegames are'nt loading, also with no issue an no crash the savegames are damaged from the game it selve..... I'm done it is a bad programmed game, thats it. I put in now nearly 20 hours to go from 22k colonist to 25k evertime the savegames arent loading and the game crashes to desktop, i have to start from my working savegame from my usb stick and put in every time two or more hours to optimize metropolis. thats frustrating.... nothing helps, reinstalled the game, reinstalled steam, updated everything on my pc. this is very sad because the game is realy fun if it will work. but it aint works.

Do you still have all overclocking disabled?

Please report the temperatures of your CPU and video (GPU)
1/ before starting the game up and
2/ after say 10 minutes' play.
If your PC's vendor has given you no way of reading temperatures, install
SPEEDFAN http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php

to make it clear (i've written it above) it isnt a problem with the overclocking or the temperature.

I've running CPU-Z, HWINFO and WIN Taskmanager, trust me, i now everything wahts going on on my system.
The CPU ist watercooled and has a temp from 44° in SM. The graphiccard has an temp of 64° and core temp 72° while running
Metropolis with 23K colonists.

Also there are two issues:

1st : Game is crashing to desktop when full zoomed out.
2nd: The autosave games the game saves arent working / are damaged.

to the first issue -->>> i think i figuered out that the cpu is the bottelneck, cause with a population of 13k colonists (older savegame) all runs stabil.
the amount of Metropolis is to high for my cpu. i'vent money atm to buy an other cpu. remeber i've an ryzen 2600x only -> this guy is at 100% with overboost at the
main landing site of Metropolis (see screenshot). at the main landingstrip is a lot of traffic and so a lot to do for the cpu. even the same thing if i zoom out. so thats the simpel thing for the 1st. issue ->> SM Cities over (i think 15k colonists) need a powerfull cpu.
for everybody, there is no way around, no overclocking, no updating, no lows graphic settings.

to the second issue -->>> i dont figure out why the game save corupted savegame files and i dont no why also. some files are running some files are'nt.
with some files the game crashes when loading, with others the game crashes after a short playing time. there is still a -> ?

anyway, i decided to start again from sol 42. I'm shure that the chaotic structure of Metropolis is a problem too. thats why i start a new try to become a good and effectiv strutur of the city. cause i figuered out that the drones and the shuttels are the main task for the cpu. so if anybody out there will try the same like me, build a runnig mega city, keep that in mind form the beginnig.

now I will start the 4th try maybe there is an other system or a other cpu in the future, but i cant spend 3000 or 5000 Euos on an PC system only for running surviving mars. Even if I would like to. If some one would like to support me feel free to contac me.
I will bring a YT Video with the itroducing of Metropolis in the near future and I update your guys here also.
