A bit of history
On 17 April 1946, Syria became independent. In 1948, Syria and other Arab nations invaded Israel. Its offenssive was a fail, and an armistice was signed in July 1949. A lot of coups took place until February 1954. The new government signed an agreement with the Soviet Union in 1956, as a direct result of the Suez Crisis. The pact gave Syria weapons, planes, and many other military equipment. The massive militarization of Syria worried Turkey, fearing a war with Syria, over İskenderun. The UN resolved this. In 1967 Syria fougth Israel again in the Six Days war. On 13 November 1970, Minister of Defense Hafez al-Assad seized power in a bloodless military overthrow. On 6 October 1973, Syria and Egypt declared war on Israel, but they where defeated. In 1976, the Syrian army intervened in the Lebanese civil war to ensure that the status quo was maintained. In 1981 Israel declared its annexation of the Golan Heights. The following year, Israel invaded Lebanon and attacked the Syrian army, forcing it to withdraw from several areas. When Lebanon and Israel announced the end of hostilities in 1983, Syrian forces remained in Lebanon. Through extensive use of proxy militias, Syria attempted to stop Israel from taking over southern Lebanon. Assad sent troops into Lebanon for a second time in 1987 to enforce a ceasefire in Beirut. When Iraq invaded Kuwait in 1990, Syria joined the US-led coalition against Iraq. In 2000, Bashar al-Assad became the new president. During his reign, there were sanctions and many pro-reformers were defeated or killed,leading to the Syrian Civil War, where this AAR begins.
