TAG limitations and parameters

I'm sorry if I've missed it but I could not find references on the board on TAG parameters and limits.

How many different country tags can the engine handle? I see that people are arguing about which TAG's to demote and reinvent as new countries yet I have not seen an explanation as to why any unused 3-letter strings could not do. For instance Hartmann adds the new SPR TAG and that works, why can't others work and how did people figure SPR was kosher???

Tags that do not have associated archives worth of graphics and entries in certain files like revolt.txt and text.csv will crash the game.

And You can´t introduce new ones even with providing all files and entries in gfx and db etc, because some info about the tags is hardcoded in the europa.exe. So wer´re stuck with the existing ones. SPR was an exception only insofar as it didn´t occurr in text.csv. We found out about it´s 'existence' by looking at the other files. But there are no more 'hidden' tags. The other ones not used (MER, ITA, MIN) etc. do not work.

I undestand fully now why you ponder how or whether to squeeze out minors to get free TAGs.
