Not too far away.. I mean on the map you can go to, and surround, the aral sea.

Tang dynasty, was not all that far away, westernmost point more or less including tadzikistan/kirgistan.
So if you are an enterprising crusader, that somehow manage to get yourself there.. you really shouldnt need any mongol connection to get such things as gunpowder?

...or even aquire such things before the mongols are spawned.. Along with deep trenches along 60ºE.

As the Tang Dynasty collapsed into anarchy and a divided China in 906, I doubt seriously that it will appear in a game that starts in 1066...
