Is it possible for two people to play one nation? For instance one handles the research and production and the other handles the deployments, diplomacy and battles... or whatever is agreed upon.

Yes, you can share countries. It is up to you to decide who will do what though, there is no in-game mechanism to specify each player's permissions.

Yes, it can be particulary entertaining for countries like US, UK, SU or Japan, which have multiple distant fronts and threatres.
