Has anybody got a good guideline on when to stop teching?
I mean there are levels like 'improved medium 70mm' for armour, or imroved tac bomber for planes, where there is a pretty good increse on basic levels..
Does the need to have a sizeable force offset the benefit of going to the next level?
Does it make sense to knock out say 10div at that level, and know you will need to wait for the next year before the next grade is available.
I appreciate that the answer will be 'it depends on your strategy & situation' but a general rule of thumb or people's opinions would be great.

I think a lot of times that choice hasn't always been decided by your strategy and situation in the game, but perhaps more by a belief that the game isn't going to be completed anyway, so I might as well base a campaign around a tech I can reach with relative ease.

Now, if you've belonged to a great group, or are part of the HoI-PA, and have a certain trust built up with your playing partners that the game is going to last into the later years, I don't think you can afford not to continue to try for better tech. It's about and arms race, always has been. Perhaps it's late in the game and you're planning an invasion to clinch victory. You know your opponents manpower is down because of war to this point, but he knows it too and has secured advanced units whereas you're still working with improved. You're gonna have a tough go of it.

Techs at the moment are too fast in research time, they need to be slowed down.

You should never stop teching, but never prioritise techs over production in war, or leading up to war.

One of the fatal decisions of most HOI players.

Depends what country you play.

UK - Mainly defending the Home Island (Navy), and Africa (Good infantry) is all that is needed, along with an airforce the equivalent in technology as Germany's.

Ger - Mainly on the offensive through land borders (Tanks/Mech), in the air (Fighters/Dive Bombers) and on sea (Subs).

It's all relevant on what country you choose.

Most of the action in most of the games I've played has been decided by basic tac/naval/dive bombers, basic interceptors, basic 70 mm tanks or improved 50 mm light tanks, improved LR subs, arty-brigaded mechs and LOTS of vanilla infantry. You can figure out how to be producing any model above the ones listed above in time for the standard Sept. 1939 war start, but doing so requires major focus and a sacrifice of building troops. Seen another way, I've never seen a player loose because he built too many crap units early instead of waiting on tech research to build better units, but I've often seen players focusing too much on tech and not having enough army when war starts. Specifically I've seen a couple Russian players have a beautiful order of T34s in the production cue, but too late to stop the Germans.

I like to push electronics, industry and guns research all the way to the juicy end advances asap, but it also works to stop after the improved basic computers/polyurthene and improved oil/rubber techs are in. And guns. . .well if you're arty brigading units guns are always a good choice.

I heartily disagree about focusing on navy as UK ( cept maybe a carrier or 2 ). They navy you start with is more than sufficent. But UK does need to ensure it maintains Air supieriority to prevent SeaLion. Then build up mech/armor so you can help russia with a credible d-day threat when barbossa occurs.

Germany you have to watch out for Tech tree creep a lot, gotta screw either sea or air to have a chance. Going for subs imo is just a little too much diversion from Russia. Ive actually gone for strong enough Navy/Air to do Sealion, but then Russia will be too strong and could invade you. ( unless u plan for an eastern defense, but thats a risky strategy, though potentially fun ) Other downside to Sealion is USA enters too early, and Russia will be waiting for you.

And the only really good Tanks are ones with 100+ mm guns at least until Tank defense gets better than mech defense. Imp med 80 are nice but soon outclassed to mech and their free upgrades.
