Something I've always wanted to see in a space strategy game is tech that is dependent on encountering other civilizations.

For example, if you encounter an enemy that has some sort of shielding technology that make your current weapons highly ineffective you will get a research project that will analyze this tech and find weaknesess. So once the analysis i completed you unlock the possibility to develop own shielding and weapons that are more effective to penetrate the shielding. Also, destroying enemy ships or even better, capturing them will give boosts to developing these techs.

This would create interesting scenarios where one side might have a massive short-term advantage over another side and force the defender to take desperate measures to counter the technology.

This would require a sort of semi-randomized tech-tree, sort of like the one in SOTS but perhaps more refined. Certain techs could be locked to only be researched by encountering and researching certain anomalies in space. Also, techs or partial branches of techs could be locked to certain races at the start of a game.

It would be exciting to balance though...

Hm... such a design seems to be highly compatible with my thoughts :D
