Two questions on these:

1. How many levels are there for each branch?
2. Should I do it one at a time (and move on to the next one), or all simultaneously? (I'm beginning to think one at a time is better, especially with random events).
 
The one thing I know that can make you split your efforts is the free points you get from your monarch and neighbors :
If you want a technology before the end of the year (e.g. stability gain before the 1st january income), you can stop putting money in that tech once you know that the free points will be enough to reach your objective.
 
1. Land: 52, naval: 42, trade and infrastructure: 10 both.

And it's your choice... but don't get too ahead, the research cost will increace dramatically if you leave others far behind...
