Tech levels

in this forum we have received plenty of info (thanx!) about the benefits of improving tech levels in army, navy and infrastucture, but
what about trade tech levels? how do they affect the number/performance of merchants?
i know that it will be in the manual, but be kind with poor Latins that can translate no more than one line of german each time...
