Technically illiterate, need help

Any help would be appreciated. I have a few questions: 1. I downloaded 1.04a, and think I have loaded it correctly. Is there any way to be sure? 2. I downloaded the beta, but can't get it to work. Can someone please give a step by step (for dummies) walkthrough on how to install the beta. 3. Could also use a step by step (for dummies) walkthrough on how to install the patch, to make sure I did it right. 4. Could use a link to the beta, in case I need to download it again. Thanks
