If Aberration takes care about historic underdogs, why not have Knights Templars as KNI if the Hospitalliers are not present anyway? After all, according to the aberrated timeline there would be no king of France to abolish that order. They could have their capital at Calais, because they had much of their possessions in northern France, irl. Their other provinces would be scattered along Europe:
-Picardy (for adjacency),
-Arragon (because some king of Arragon once almost let Templars inherit his realm),
Highlands (because the Masons claim to be the descendants of the Templars),
and some provinces in crusading area, say, Lebanon and Damiette. They should likely go CRC. They perhaps may be vassals of the Papacy.

Some events I could imagine:

-Once Granada controls Arragon, or Mamelukes control Damiette, or Caliphate controls Lebanon, Templars have to secede it by event.

-Then, after a while, (if KOJ loses Levant) they get an event that they have trouble to reinforce their ME possessions because Granada blocks straits of Gibraltar. They can either:
a)try to conquer the straits,
– get core on Gibraltar
– bad relations/Jihad events for GRA, MAM and CAL
– wakes a current admiral and/or general

b)sell their possessions to Genoa and focus on elsewhere
– secede provinces and lose cores in Damiette and Lebanon
– get some money (500d if Genoa agrees)
– wakes some later explorers/conquistadors

-if Genoa does not want to buy the area, MAM and CAL get the respective provinces

-if Templars decide to give up their mediterranean lands, they may meddle in the Baltic: During the Russian crusade, the Teutonic knights may decide to give them a province as some kind of a base (say, Memel), and get some troops, a decent general and +5 manpower in Prussia to represent Templar efforts to help them. If a catholic Norway is at war with Finland, it may decide to secede Finnmark to the Templars in exchange for a war declaration.

-if Templars find themselves at war with catholic Teutonics, the Pope condemns that fighting. Both sides lose vp and stability, and suffer some desertions.

-if Scotland goes protestant or reformed, it may want to take back the Highlands.

-if the Templars border the Aztecs, the latter may convert to catholic, or face a crusade.

Did the Templars really acted as a nation not more as bankers? Too spread out for a nation.

Well, I've read they tried and failed with a coup in Cyprus aiming to become something like the Hospitaliers or Teutonics. It was under Molay, just before the end. And if the king of France didn't envy them that much, I see no reason for them not to become a nation. They even took king's side when he threatened the Pope, which indicates the beginning of a state's policies. Else, they always tried to trade the lands they got for those closer to their possessions, thus trying to consolidate some of their lands. Anyways, just a proposition for enhancement.

Why not give the Templars Calais, Picardie and Cyprus (I hate the event that let KOJ flee to Cyprus and survive the whole game because they gather a 50k army on the poor island and no one dare to conquer it). They could have claims on some provinces in the middle east, and maybe be able to claim the old provices of KOJ when they are eaten by the powerful Kaliphate. They could also gain some explorers and conquistadors eventually.
