I don't know what exactly, but at some event I get weird messages insted of texts. For example: In event 3519 (Brandenburg) I get nothing but a window with EVENT3519 ,and no text.
ACTION_a
Action_b
Most of theese things happen at Brandenburg.

Is something wrong with the file ?

Well I tried but the program runs till let's say 35% when it tells me I don't have a valid text.csv.
You should know that my version is 1.00 and the program says it will upgrade EU 1.01 to 1.02.

You should know that my version is 1.00 and the program says it will upgrade EU 1.01 to 1.02.

I suggest you apply the 1.00 to 1.03 patch (here).

1.01 to 1.02 will not work whan you have 1.00...

I've had some trouble with patch 1.00 to 1.03. I had US version 1.02b, but when trying to update I got that same message about 2not valid text.csv". I haven't edited anything, so I don't understand why text.csv is reported as altered...

I've had to reinstall again from 1.00

I wonder if there can be some sort of program incompatibility with MS Excel.

It has been said that all the .txt and .csv files from the Db folder in both EU and EU2 should be opened with a common word editor (Wordpad, Notepadsize permitting or Word). If one uses Excel to open these files and edit anything, the program changes dunnowhat and the file is no longer recognized by the game programs.

Well, the file designation ".csv" is that of some kind of Excel documents (something like "text files from tables" or something alike)

What I wonder is if by the only presence of Excel installed in any given system all those .csv files are modified, marked or anything by Excel, so slightly as to still being recognized by game program, but enough to EU2 patches to tell that they have been altered...

Does anyone have had this problem AND have Excel (2000 or newer) installed in his system?

It's a real pain to have to reinstall the whole program with every patch, even when not having messed a bit with data files

Patching problems - moved to bug forum... (or should it be support?)

I don't think the mere precence of Excel should mess up the files if you haven't opened/saved the files...

Well, I have installed Excel 2000 before EU2 so my text.csv file is opened using Excel. I don't remember modifing it but I've opened it when I installed EU2, I think.

Now this is a common problem. I think many more people have it but they didin't ask for help. There is something wrong with our text.csv files.
Is it legal to get a copy of somebody else's text.csv file ? If so we could experiment what happens.

if you opened the file with Excel, it is possible you saved it on exiting and therefore Excel changed the format.

Alex: E-mail me at eu_traduction@yahoo.ca and I'll send you the file. If it works, please tell me and I'll find a way to make it available for everyone (I have a web page with a few mb left of free space).

For the others, please do not e-mail me until further notice. Thanks.

It doesn't work ...

Nope. Nothing happens, the same old stupid error: invalid text.csv. Do you know what this means ? It means there is another error different from the invalid text.csv one, but the program can not identify it correctly. But the question is what is the true error ???

Oh, Viper thanx for the help anyway.

try a search on all hard drive for text.csv and tell me if there are more than one files and were are they.

Well, I have 4 text.csvs on my hard disk.

3 in My documents:

1. C:\My Documents - text.csv #1 ( My original text.csv )
2. C:\My Documents\EU Save - text.csv #2 ( EU Save is a folder were I keep my sava games for EU1 and I think this text.csv is for EU1 )
3. C:\My Documents\Tom_Wales-Prussia - text.csv #3 ( This text.csv is also for EU1 and this folder contains a scenario I downloaded for EU1 )

1 in the EU2 folder:
D:\Europa Universalis 2\Config text.csv #4 ( This text.csv is the one you've sent me. I have 2 hard disks, but because I had low hard disk space I was forced to move the EU2 folder here. )

Here's an interesting fact:

Before I tried to install the patch for update Turkey was called Turkey and after I trying to install it and entering the game again, Turkey was calle Ottoman Empire. A few more changes of this type happened nothing special, but that's all, nothing big. Remember, the installation stops at 18%. This means that the program partially changed the text.csv when it stopped. It means that the patch recognises EU2.exe and text.csv, but something bad happens afterwards.

I hope this can help us find a solution for this annoying bug.

Best Regards,
Alex

What good will a reinstallation of the game do ? If the patch didn't work when I first installed the game, what will it make it work now ?

Oh well, it seems it is quite complicated and takes a lot of time. Are you sure this is necessary ?
