KgW is wrong. King Sebastian did indeed die in Morocco but King Philip II of Spain did not takeover the throne right away and he certainly did not inherit it, he took it by force instead. After the death of King Sebastian, Cardeal D.Henrique became king. Unfortunately he was old and his reign lasted only for two years until his death in 1580. The same year when King Philip II of Spain I of Portugal marched into Lisbon eliminating the resistance he met. A pity that...

Nah, he just got lost in a fog. He'll be back soon.

As the rise of Filipe I, I personaly must say I actually prefer him to that dolt of the Prior do Crato (somebody who gets outflanked like that at Alcântara with an army that actually had a unit of nuns and later offers Brasil to France in exchange for help _can't_ be a decent king).

Keoland

To bad they regained their independence, that is.
:D

I thought the duke of Alva conquered Portugal for Philip.

Yes, although the prior of Crato was proclaimed king at Lisbon in June of 1580, that same month the Duke of Alba entered Portugal with a Spanish army and elminated all resistance within four months. In April of 1581, Philip II (Philip I of Portugal) went to Portugal and received homage. He remained in Portugal until 1583.
