Background
I’m tired of ad-hoc one evening campaigns with players dropping out after failed infantry, constant crashes etc. Therefore I will set up a new dedicated permanent HOI campaign using my 10 Mbit connection as host if no other player is a more stable host. The object is to play a long-term historical campaign with regular players simulating war world II utilizing the full aspect of the game while having a fun and pleasant gaming experience.

Scenario:
HOI 1.04, 1939-48, Very Hard, aggressive

AAR:
An After Action Report thread will be opened and each player will hopefully write something about their country’s progress, plans and view of the game there.

Player countries:
Each faction is played as a team. If the axis are defeated the two allied factions wins a joint victory. A state is NOT allowed to change sides during the campaign,
Axis: Germany, Italy, Japan
Allies: UK, USA
Communist: USSR

*Optional players
Also there could be a circulating minor player playing in order Poland, France until continental France is totally conquered first time. This player will then move on to Axis Hungary or Rumania or a commonwealth minor.
If enough players are interested there will be a discussion of allowing a Chinese player.

Speed and pausing:
The game will be played at the lowest speed that any player wishes for. Pausing is ALWAYS allowed. If you don’t agree with this please do not apply for this campaign.

Player requirements:
Dedicated, mature, polite, skilled, punctual European players with better than modem connection. If a player doesn’t fulfil ANY of these requirements he will be substituted immediately.

Sessions and duration:
The goal is to play 1-2 evenings a week, 4-6 hours from around 18.00 CET with about 6 months of game time per session. The game will go on until on side capitulates or for the duration of the campaign when VP will decide who is the victor. If this is possible the game should be completed in 5-10 weeks IRL. If a player is absent for one session he is supposed to arrange a stand-in in good time before the session.

So far Tuesdays and Wednesdays are out.

Signing up:
If you are interested in participating in this campaign please send an ICQ message to the following number: 103632632 stating the following facts:
Callsign/name
Internet connection
Preferred country, 1st, 2nd and 3rd choice
Days available and time during these days when you can play

House rules: (these are open to discussion by accepted players…)
Tech sharing
A maximum of 3 technologies can be shared per year (of any type) by each nation. Ie. 3 during 1939, 3 during 1940 etc. These can be sent any time during the year. To keep track of them they should be written down on a paper. You can only send tech to countries in your alliance.

Straits
There are several sea lanes that you can´t travel through if the enemy controls it. It´s also prohibited to move a navy to these sea zones unless you control them. Submarines are expected from this rule, they are allowed to sail everywhere the game allows. Convoys are also allowed to pass (or try passing, if they are not intercepted).
Öresund:
If a player controls Copenhagen or Malmö then hostile ships are not allowed to pass through Kattegatt into (or out) of the Baltic sea (Östersjön).

The Sea of Marmara: (Near Istanbul, Turkey)
If an alliance controls both sides of the channel then its prohibited for enemy ships to sail through.

Declarations of war:
The US may not DoW any state until the situation warrants it even if reload bug or WE allows it.

Vichy France:
It’s the German player, not the French player who decides whether to got with Vichy France or total conquest. When this event comes up the French player should ask the German player what to pick. If France is played by AI the AI will decide for itself.

Paratroopers:
Obviously any paratroopers exploits aren’t allowed. Furthermore player countries may construct a maximum of 4 paratrooper divisions each. Also no paradrop is allowed unless the transport has full (100) org.

General exploits
Are not allowed. Only the country that DoWs another state may annex it. (To prevent Italy from DoW for Germany to avoid WE fx. Players should play the game it was intended to be played and avoid possible exploits or be banned from the game.

A maximum of 24 planes per province is allowed...

No supplies or resources may be sent from a neutral player to another player state.

It is not allowed to invade or attack from a neutral state using military access or expeditionary forces through that country.
Welcome...

If you didn't notice, that's part of the game already.

If the axis are defeated the two allied factions wins a joint victory.

That's stupid.

It's a three faction game after all.

Can you say Cold War turned hot?

Furthermore player countries may construct a maximum of 4 paratrooper divisions each.

With 4 troopers max I don't see a reason to build any in the first place.

I knew that the Suez was fixed this way. If the other straits are fixed that way even better. However I suspect that Örsund and Gibraltar isn't. You seem a very attentive young man and surely can inform us what's the case in this matter.

I can say that...
"Cold war turned hot"... see? But that it's stupid is your opinion and you are very welcome to not join the campaign if it bothers you to play along the guidelines ie. historically.

Then this limit shouldn't be problem for people that think like you, should it? It's put there to avoid paratrooper exploits. Also historically no nation had a large amount of para divisions since they were highly specialized units and the game has no inherent limit to this.

I am not sure about Örsund, but Gibraltar functions and behaves just like Suez. That is, as long as Britain controls Gibraltar, none of the Axis ships (except subs) can move from the Med to the Atlantic or vice versa.

In fact, when Italy conquers both banks of the suez, and you, as Germany, tries to move ships into the Med, you will notice that the planned route will take you all the way around South Africa and through suez, as the western route via Gibraltar is blocked. Provided of course that Italy is part of the Axis :D

Thats Great Jan Peter. Thank you for the information.

I actually once controlled Cairo and Sinai as Italy but not the provinces further down the Red Sea and still couldn't send ships throught the channel.

I think that Öresund and Masmara really should work this way as well when contrlled by a hostile faction. Maybe they do, maybe they don't? Anyone knows for sure?

I think there are four of us at the moment. juv95hrn knows for sure, send him a message at icq if you want to join.

I think your attempt to create a stable group is a great idea.

I'm in a group that is pretty stable (4-5 regulars for every game and another 10 or so that jump in and out).

We've been in existence since January. Here are some suggestions that may help you form up a group.

1. in the beginning you're going to have some player flux - can't be helped until your group gets some history and you "learn" which players fit into your styles/schedules/etc...

2. If you can get 1 or 2 guys to play - set up a game THAT night and go out onto Valkyrienet and recruit. You're going to get good, great, bad, ok, and horrible players - but its the only way. Get some jerks? Dump them. Get some great players? Accomodate them. Start up is a bitch but it has to be done.

3. don't set down a bunch of rules before you form the group. Have the group discuss house rules and settle on them. "Demogogue Hosts" never keep players too long. I'm the host of our group and I take great pains to not be a "dictator" and let the group be a "democracy".

4. frequency - how many nights a week is part of the group dynamic but remember that once a month and you'll have no group, everynight of the week and you'll burn people out.

5. Europe/North America - if you are in Europe, just get Euros (and vice versa): The connection issues and time difference will KILL your games and meeting times.

6. Another note on House Rules - house rules should exist to prevent use of game exploits, not to tell people how to play. You (may) think restricting stuff like Alliances makes a more "historic" game but you WILL scare off the more experienced and creative players. Think of it this way - I (personally) am a WWII buff. To me, if the US doesn't island hop its way through the South Pacific or Russia doesn't avoid war with Germany AT ALL COSTS then the game is "divergent" from history. Are you going to force the US to leave its battleships in Honolulu in '41? If each player plays in the "spirit" of their country (i.e. Stalin is a paranoid of ALL the other powers and seeks a Russian hegemony) then you're golden.

Count me in. Juv knows me from EU2 MP and I have got some HOI experience and really would like to try it out.

I'm in if need players.

Thank you diefledermaus for all your advice. I think it makes sense all you are saying and I'm sure more experienced groups should abide by them all. My MP experience in HOI on vnet has been rather horrilbe though, (compared to EU2) so this campaign will be played under a "historical" alliance setup at least. I'm not going to prevent players from being ahistorical ingame but I will not see France and Germany jump Italy in 1939. I think historical alliances and historical gameplay are two different things and that there are enough players out there to try a rather strict implementation in their first serious campaign. As this group grows more experienced I'm sure we will have less restrictions.

Regarding house rules I'm totally open to discussion and advice from more experienced players in MP. The ones I put are, as mentioned, merely suggestions.

I have recently downloaded the "stony road" mod and I must say it destroys my life. I highly recomend it to anyone that wants a real challenge in playing this game. A good practice for MP I'd say.

So far we are 4 or 5 players. Some of the ICQ messages I received did however not get saved so I'm lacking some information about players. If you are not mentioned below please rensend me your info. An anynomous ICQ msg saying "I'm in!" isn't enough either :)

Countries occupied:
Russia
Germany
Italy
Japan
US
UK

Countries free:
-

Playable days:
Sunday
Monday
Thursday

Thursdays will be the playing day if all players are available this day.

Days that are out:

Jon 10Mbit USSR

Well, i would also like to join juv, but i totally suck, so ill come back later when i have at least 24 hours of experience with the game.:)

lol Mulli...

I hear you are doing a great DoN game so I'm sure You'll improve rapidly... Please practice with the Stony road mod and not the original scenarios since they are in no way as challenging as a MP game should/would/will be.

I'm thinking about gathering players in this campaign in the HOI vnet channel to chat and try out connections this thursday at 18.00 CET if all are available. There is still one position to be filled in the game if anyone is interested.

Count me in!

But honestly, I realy suck playing as UK, and I usually start in 1936 in SP, so '39 will be sorta new to me. But I guess I can always practice a bit by myself before we start :)

My ICQ: 313230018

Ok

It seems thursdays will be a good day for all to play. We will try to meet in vnets HOI channel tursday,22/5 18.00 CET. We will discuss house rules, countries, exchange ICQ#s, etc and if time allows set up a game and try connections then hopefully we can start the real camapign after one more weeks preparations including diplomac and strategy plannings.

If you cant make it please let me know...

Heh, juv, you have no idea how bad i am at this game:) . I lost as Germany vs. France on easiest difficulty possible.

So far no one has cancelled but neither has anyone confirmed which usually is a bad sign. It would be good if people could tell me wither way...

We are now 4 players (in the HoI channel on V-Net), ready to soon start a game. Anybody who wants to join can log in to V-Net.

All are here in v-net except juv.:)
