Is there a formula for directing the probable development of a new COT? I've tried to build up one colony very well w/ population, infastructure, putting lots of subsidary colonies and trading post around it, etc. But this does not seem to affect the percieved randomness. Also, before I upgraded my version, I was playing the Fantasia campaign and noticed my new territories would fall into other country's COT, which doesn't really please me, is that no longer the case in the upgrade (1.08)? Thanks.

Yep, there is a random factor involved. You can't be absolutelty sure that your colony will get it. Improve infrastructure, build a bigger colony, but it's still random.

And no, that hasn't been "fixed". Why should it????

Ah! What I meant by "Fixed" was not phrased correctly, I was half thinking to myself! Let me be more direct; is there any advantage to my setting up of tradingposts in the sphere of influence of others? The only income in generates goes to its COT (at least at LV1). I mean, you think since their homeland supplies them and chartered them, they would be forced to trade with our COTs?
That first question brings another question..... is it actually worth the rist to establish a colony in native occupied land without millitary backup? Even very low aggressive natives always kill my people or trading posts off!:(

Still, they are merchants. And they go where the money is. If they think some other COT gives you more profit, they will go there. Logical. They are your free merchants, not slaves.

Yes, it's sometimes worth a shot. Especially if you are nation that doesn't colonize very actively, but you still need that colony. I colonized a bit of Southern America as Austria. I didn't even have a clue how to get my ships there, and if i did, they wouldn't have survived the trip (err... even if i had any ships). So i just risked it. It's worth it... but when there is a military unit available, don't hesitate to use it.

Another interesting aspect not understood

I have noticed that the area and influence of bordering COTs tend to wax and wane... what can influence this? Number of merchants in the respective COTs or perhaps trade level of controlling power?

P.S. "Eyeball-kid": How am I suppose to know "what is up?" I haven't taken my eyes off the monitor since I got this horribly addictive game... and I thought nothing would ever get me off of civ2!;)
