Ethiopia was the first nation i played when I got EU III. And it has always been an obsession of mine. My dream is to make a mighty Ethiopian Empire, Spanning the entire world!

Well...

Since it is unlikely to happen under my rather incompetant hands, I will set the rather more modest goal of seeing Ethiopia survive untill 1821, and hopefully will have made it at least a major world power by that time.

This will be my first attempt with Ethiopia in Divine Wind. All settings are normal. Except difficulty which will be very hard, and AI agressiveness, which will be low.

I will also be using the Balance Improvement Mod, and have made all the hordes tribal despotisms.

The Known World!:

Hmm... Already noticed something different and interesting! I have a boat! Thats not something Ethiopia ever had in previous releases of the game. Its a cog. May come in handy someday.

Other than that, not much is different. The only nation i am aware of is Adal. They are sunni somalians. And they are not very friendly

Well. For the time being they are safe. I still need to build an army.

The other main concern for Ethiopia is religion. We are Orthodox Christians. But the nation is greatly divided. With large Animist and Sunni communities. Converting them will be a priority.

I look to my advisors and hire a theologan. Many of the religious decisions are worth doing now, With the mod i am using you can later rescind them. Which is something i always felt was missing from Vanilla.

I pass the Advancement of religion act. For some strange reason if i tell people they cannot read the Bible they will really really really want to read it and convert.... actually i guess thats a pretty clever bit of reverse psycology.

I also pass the blasphemy act. I feel dirty, But i need to have religious uniformity. If Ethiopia is to succeed.

I make my first slider move towards Free subjects, Still a long way to go in that department! And Unpause the game.

Nice update! Ethiopia is pretty cool, I saw a documentary about them the other day.

I really want to have a go at an Ethipia game now. I like the look of this, I'll be checking it regularly. Good luck.

I think the tought behind that Advancement of religion act is that if the people can't read the bible, your clerics can tell them the officially "correct" version.

Johhog: Yeah, Ive always been really interested in its history. Considering where it is in the world, it stands out from its neighbhors.

Mark033: I would love to see how you do. I have a strategy in mind for this game, but would love to see what other people would come up with to make Ethiopia strong.

Sather: Yeah i guess that would be the intention of such a ruleing. It just seems counter intuitive in this day in age. But i have to put myself in the mindset of a 15th century tribal monarch

Update number two:

Ethiopia is still a sleepy backwater. Divided by its own religious debates and oblivious to the outside world.

Since i do not have the ability to build anything yet, and wont for quite some time. I can devote my magistrates to creating a cultural flowering in Ethiopia.

Once i reach full stability i devote all my research to land tech. At level 3 i will be able to build forts. But that development is still 50 years away.

The old Chief dies. And leaves me with is rather unremarkable son.... Tewodros! Well despite his rather unpromising nature. I intend to make him history speak of him as one of Ethiopias greatest leaders.

Soon after Towodros comes to power, The Known world gets larger and scarier.

Looks like first contact did not go to well. They hate me more than Adal does. But no need to worry. The mamlukes are at war with Manchu, And Oirat Horde!!!

I get a second Missioanry, and send him to start converting Awsa. Even without an army there, there is no revolt risk. I kinda like being decentralized now.

Blsteen. Well Ethipia has a hard road to follow. As my next update will show. I agree, I think the Ethiopians would have a little more awareness of the outside world than many of the outher countries.

Nedews. Its not a change in Divine wind, but a mod i am using for divine wind. In vanilla DW the centralization slider works the same. Thanks for the luck, ill need it

1406. A dark time for the people of Ethiopia!

Followed a week later by this:

I had 11 ducats on hand, and was now at war. The poor people of shoa are left to die.

I put my army up to full maintenance. And wait to see if my new strategy is going to succeed.

Then some good news!

Although they may now end up being a christian community under Mamluke rule.

Its two and a half months of waiting untill i finally see an enemy army heading into my territory.

[/IMG]

Massawa falls and my cog is forced out to sea, where it is promptly sunk by a massive mamlukian fleet. Which was a bit surprising.

My strategy is one of Guerilla warfare. I cant take them on head on. I need to stay one step ahead of them all the time and never let them engage my main army, and certainly never let them kill it. I even plan to retreat into the uncolonized areas around my borders if need be to avoid combat with the enemy.

The plan fails. After a couple of months of retaking territtory after the mamlukians leave the territory, I see two more doom stacks heading down into Ethiopia, One has a high manuever general. And i get caught.

I try to make a run for uncolonized territory, but am too slow. My army is destroyed.

Predictably!

The mamlukes completely occupy Ethiopia I keep sending peace offers offering half the country, Which they reject. Then they force a peace on me.

a12t.png
[/IMG]
Hmm, that was surprising, i had expected them to be much harsher.

I have no army Adal Occupies Ifat and Awsa. I offer them peace.

A much reduced Ethiopia after the war.

Well, Defeat. I will have to rethink My strategy. But in the future when Ethiopian armies are storming Cairo, this defeat will make that eventual victory that much more sweet!

Ouch, hopefully the Mameluks and Adal will have trouble pacifying the conquered provinces.

Boris Ze spider: I will try, This is my first aar, and ive never uploaded photos before. If you could share any tips it would be appreciated. You made your excellent Granadan aar look very nice.

Soarom: Yeah, With Ethiopia just surviving is a victory in my opinion. I need time to westernize to take on the mamlukes. I am playing with Historical nations and no hordes in the hopes that the Ottomans will become quite powerful, and distract the mamlukes for me. As for Adal, they just got lucky and i am going to get my revenge as soon as the truce runs out.

Legendary Bard: Yes i hope that one day Ethiopia will be a proper empire. But for now we are still just a group of tribes hardly worthy of Salasie

Colep55: Yeah they seem to have really high levels of rr. And there have been rebellions. The Ethiopians in adal will be liberated at some point. As for My countrymen in massawa, they will have to wait for liberation.

Enewald: Yes that is the hope. Either that or go down in glorious defeat.

Aftermath of the war.

It sucks to be poor! I tell my wounded veterans that they will get no help from me.

The one good thing about the war, is that Adal and Egypt have taken all my muslim provinces. I have only one animist province left. I send a missionary, and it converts within a month. At last Ethiopia is religiously united

But then my Chief lets a loud one rip at the dinner celebrating this fact

I get my second slider movement, I move towards innovative. There is still too much war exhaustion and my army is still to weak to risk centralizing at this stage

I laugh as i see loyal partiots rising up in the lost territories. But the joke is on me. In a rather stupid move i decide to change my government from Tribal despotism to Tribal federation. I now fight a year long civil war with rebels in the south.

After the rebels are delt with and i have regained some stability, I get another bad event. I dont have the cash to pay, and so i pray. It works. And i gain some much needed legitamacy.

Okay, I cant let this stand! I am not going to be treated like trash by Adal... The truce has expired it time for war! I start my armies marching into thier territory in an angry rage.

They have Swahili and Nadj on their side. But it looks like Swahili are at war with Mutapa, with luck i wont have to fight them as well.

Two days before arriving in the lost territories my Chief dies! I Quickly make his son into a general and continue to march, but this cannot be a good omen.

The mamlukes sponser a pretender. Damn... I think for a moment if i should continue. But decide to press on. Taking Awsa and Ifat and Adals Capital. Thier army is a no show.

I march north, and take defensive ground, and Adals army finally comes to fight me. I have a killer advantage being a defender, But they have much better morale. So good in fact that even though they are being slaughtered they keep coming and coming. In the middle of the battle I hear about a dispute between a priest and Philosopher, The preferred opiton of "Cant you see im Kinda busy right now!" Is not available, so i support the philosopher.

The army of Adal is slaughtered! Hopefully they will remeber this the next time they think about stabbing me when i am fighting the mamlukes. I quickly occupy the rest of the country.

I regain my lost territories and now am quite rich

I gather my forces and start marching back to deal with the traitorous pretender.

I bet Adal will think twice before backstabbing you again ;)
