Chapter one: The battle for Sevilla.

"CHARGE!" Captain McKenzie yelled. We all left the trench and ran towards the Nationalists lines at the square of Sevilla. A machine gun opened fire, and we got pinned down. As the captain yelled to us to duck, I had already thrown myself to the ground.

"WHAT ARE WE GONNA DO, CAPTAIN?" I shouted.

"YOU, FISCHER, CLARK AND MURRAY CRAWLS TOWARDS THE LINES AND THROW IN A GRENADE! WHISTLE IN A PIPE SO WE KNOW WHEN TO PROVIDE COVERY FIRE, THEN RISE UP AND RUN FOR YOUR LIFES!" The captain answered. We started crawling towards the Spanish sandbags. The machine gun continued the endless firing, and I heard my friends scream from pain and agony.

Eventually we came to the sandbags unnoticed, threw in the grenade, whistled, stood up and ran. The machine gun took aim on Murray, who fell down on the ground and screamed. I was the fastest person in the platoon, so I came to our lines safe, but Clark got shot in the head, and Fischer were hit in the leg at the same time as he arrived to our lines and the machine gun was blown up.

"OKEY LADS, LET'S TAKE THE REST OF THIS SQUARE! CHARGE!" The captain shouted, and we ran towards the sandbags, and drove the defenders from the square. Three days later the city of Sevilla was in Republican hands.

"Mates, I am proud of you! You showed that the Australians is good fighters, and you've done a great job, especially Murray, Fischer, Clark and Tilbrook, when they threw the grenade unnoticed into the enemys defence line. Congratulations." The captain said to us. I was shy, so my face turned red when my name was metioned and everybody applaused and looked at me.

The Australian expeditionary corps that were sent to Spain to aid the Republicans took Sevilla October 16. 5,300 Australians falled in the city, but the Nationalists was driven away towards northwest, after the surrender of 2 militia divisions. Private John Tilbrook and private Albert Fischer got awarded for their actions on the square.

Hey Wamo,

It may interest you to know that Aussies actually fought on both sides during the war. Perhaps you could have your young hero discover that he has killed someone he knew from home. A true international fight of the Ideologies!

Cheers,
Duritz.

This is an interesting storyline. I am awaiting more. :)

I don't think Orwell was Australian, but he fought in the Civil War didn't he?
