JohannWelf.jpg

Hello. Let me introduce myself as the Creator. I can tell the past AND the future.

In the future my dynasty would expand to the House of Hannover, so yes Vicky is technically an off shoot off ME and in all truth, CK > Victoria, as exemplified in my other story here

Many of you may have heard of my illustrious ancestor, the greatest Guelph that stalked the earth.

HenrytheLion.jpg

He is my past ^^

He was a long and faithful supporter of his cousin, the Emperor Frederick Barbarossa. But Frederick, belonging to the treacherous house of Hohenstaufen as is he, exiled him in 1182.

History books then details; the patronage of his father-in-law the King of England, his return in 1185, his uprising during the Third Crusade, the truce with Barbarossa's son in 1194 and peaceful death in August 1195.

But not many knows his story as completely and vividly as I do, particularly from the year 1187 onwards. I often ask myself whether this marked the greatest time of his life. But more often, I ask "WHY did history neglect this part of his life?"

Thus like crystal ball I will enlighten you with truth, and tell you the forgotten story of Henry the Lion, which began in January 1187...

Good first post. Nice slightly cheeky beginning with a sign of humour, but not too forced. And then a little mystery at the end.

I am graced to see your comments Stnylan, particularly for being first. :)

The AAR is a gameplay one.

While revamping the other AAR (which is my first and pet project I don't plan on giving up), I had many ideas put to paper, scrapped, again and again. Among which were silly ones that could not properly be incorporated into my main AAR.

But this one I could not resist. So I started it as a new thread, this thread.

Not wanting to compromise finite time in AAR writing, this will be a gameplay one and, it would feature the life of Henry the Lion only.

Should I delve past his life, Johann might not be born and such would obscure the other AAR (effects: very bad!!!). :(

Update rates would be fast, or try to.

The game is played on the latest DV patch, Very Hard and Normal aggressiveness. No cheats. Save Loads start of every year.

Hope we enjoy.

Changed Man

...in January 1187, Henry the Lion was not the same man.

Me.jpg

Energetic, Just and Proud - but no longer the Brilliant Strategist

He was now Heinrich Welf.

Old and friendless he'd became preoccupied with money. And yet money wealth he lacked.

His court and bedroom was the same, shabby in equal measure, enshrined by its one member. His wife.

For men of his peerage, he was quite the failure. By contrast to his enemies who were both Kings of the Reich, he was doubly a loser.

It angers Heinrich, this fate of his. "He betrayed me!" he would yell, cursing the Hohenstaufen name with utmost hatred.

mobilise.jpg

Vengeance would bring his prestige back.

Proud and energetic, he resolved to do something about it. So he donned his helmet and he gestured his men to do the same, to the general sense that they would do something.

taxchanges.jpg

Without pay of course

plan1.jpg

Few have seen the Emperor face to face. His men would appreciate the chance to sightsee Frederick's head.

So on 1 January, Heinrich and host marched.

decisionattheinn.jpg

Innsbruck could only raise 1085 men

By 13 May, the 2974 weary and overworked tourists reached their destination. The Alps lived up to its high fame. The scenery was as grand as the time to climb it.

"Should I siege his castle now," Heinrich mused, "I would have more than enough time before reinforcements can arrive."

It was clear what he could do and achieve, but noble brave Heinrich was not a vengeful person. He had justice written all over his biographies.

warodds.jpg

Thanks to Heinrich's moral emminence, Barbarossa's life was spared

Though not vengeful, Heinrich was not forgiving either. So he pursued what could only be right - a Reichstag, a convention on the wrongdoings of the Ghibellines.

The assembly rocked the kingdom. Exchanges were epic; nasty and full of slurs. But in the end the legal suit failed. The rule of law, as it is, was beneath the Emperor.

To teach Barbarossa a lesson for that injustice, Heinrich resorted to dirty legal tactics.

egyptwar.jpg

Nothing annoys your liege than by making him go to war

Thus started the Third Crusade, historically known as 'the King's Crusade', but really it should be renamed 'the Lion's Crusade'.

Though 57 years of age, firsthand experience of injustice changed his life. He was different before, he was different just now, and is now different again.

Though Heinrich was still techinically touched by Midas (stingy fickle Midas), in spirit he was a brilliant strategist again.

And his men welcomed the change, for it meant they will be paid now. "To the Holy Land!" they encouraged, in hope of subverting their lord to a total spendthrift.

shipcost.jpg

Democracy at work. Hooray to spending!

And so 2974 men and their noble lord set sail from Aquileia (Venice, Italy) to the Holy Land, sailing well ahead of the Imperial forces.

30 December 1187

On New Year's Eve, Henry reflects on the passing year. "How did I get myself into this?" he questioned his now negative 122 ducat treasury.

Nice humour as before - not too forced, not too brash.

And I think restricting your AAR to the life of one ruler is itself a good idea. Keeps it focused.

Movies to watch: The 300, The Kingdom of Heaven, Pirates of the Caribbean

It was hard to keep a straight mind, that voyage with 2974 men.

24Jan.jpg

On 24 January, they met the royal Jerusalem entourage at Tyres.

"When I heard of your coming, I gleefully prepared your arrival. But what is this? Henry the Lion brought only 3000 soldiers?"

"You!" Heinrich pointed, "What do you do for a living?"
theblacksmith.jpg

"I am the blacksmith," bowed Will Turner

Guy de Lusignan nonetheless plead his case.

Salah ah-Din has unified the heathen Syria north and east with Eygpt and Arabia south and west.

Even the historians had already written in Guy's annals the dates of how and when his Kingdom end.

"Save my annals! Oh mighty Heinrich, I do not want it to end in 1192."

Guy's plan detailed Heinrich spearheading a blitzkrieg on the Syrian front, before he regroup to the Egyptian side.

wardamascus.jpg

Proud Heinrich could not refuse a damsel in distress

jerusenterwar.jpg

The Holy Kingdom, 4 years before their use by date, enters war

On 28 Febuary, Heinrich entered the final phase of his manoeuvre against the Sheik of Damascus.

"This will be our first major engagement men, and already our enemies are quailing at our German might. The way they form up shows their fear of fighting us man to man, their reliance on a women's strategem of throwing things at us. They have no sense of style, no manly virtues, no reason to live, no decent food, no attractive women and their leaders - why, the Devil himself would be shamed to have them in Hell. But shame him we must for God wills it!

"Guelph! Guelph! Guelph!" roared the men.

But it will require hard work, this work of God, I will not lie to you because I can see the brave man besides who is up for this, who knows the way of battle. He knows full well how fast the heathen flees as we charge past their arrows. Hails of arrows, that is, released by trembling hands.

So let us attend to our chivalrous duties and relieve them of their misery. Onwards, and prepare to charge to wherever God wills us!"

"Guelph! Guelph! Guelph!!!"

Speech ripped off from here.

28Feb.jpg
2March.jpg
3March.jpg

On 2 March, they began their advance. By the end of 3 March, his arrowphobic host was too demoralised forcing Heinrich an ordered retreat.

defeat.jpg

"The arrow hurts milord. I don't mind fighting man to man, but the arrows.. oh god no."

Shaking his head in dismay, energetic Heinrich looked to the political situation of Syria.

4LordsofSyria.jpg

The 4 Lords of Syria in light green, and their darker coloured vassals

Since Salah ah-Din levied the services of his lords, they'd brought away with them their army, leaving their capital unprotected.

"As my men find no bravery with enemy archers, they shall look for it empty enemy castles instead."

mvt1.jpg

So Heinrich and host set out to siege Syria.

siege1.jpg

Jerusalem meanwhile kept Damascus busy, by fighting and losing and fighting again.

It was successful. Peace was concluded and Heinrich Welf was recognised, Count of Syria.

A less energetic man would have stopped and be content there. But our hero Heinrich was not such a man, he learnt Arabic and mobilised the young men of Syria into his host; and then to war with the absentee lords of Syria.

mvt2.jpg

They boasted their bravery to Mosul's walls.

Aug25.jpg

Heinrich Welf was unstoppable, really nothing stopped him

On 25 August, he was made Count of Mosul, and it was there where Heinrich was made aware of the rivalry between the Arabs and Turks.

"Salam aleikum! mein herr," greeted his new recruit from Mosul, "we have heard of your noble spirit, your insatiable thirst of justice, and with the incorrigibility of your character we ask you to avenge us for wrongs inflicted by the Turks."

"Wa-aleikum-as-salam," replied Heinrich courteously as Arabs make up nearly half of his forces now, "What gives?"

"For hundreds of years, Kirkuk was our ancestral home. Now the Turks from the steppes have dominated it, calling it theirs. Take us there, so may we drive them out."

Heinrich was intrigued by this new recruit. He could use a Marshall. "And how would you suggest we do that?" tested Heinrich.

"The Emir of Kirkuk, a foolish man has his capital on a hill, protected by no castle but a mere fort. Should we defeat him at his base in Kirkuk, we could finish our siege before his vassals come."

innsbruckoftheeast.jpg

"Innsbruck of the East had 2420 men"

Energetic Heinrich quickly studied his plans.

kirkukxbowtech.jpg

Green equals +7 arrow attack and 30% more effectiveness aginst his infantry, so Brown equals uh minus that

Encouraged that the Turk's arrows were not as potent as that at Damascus, justice-seeking Heinrich and his 3604 justice-seeking men marched off to Kirkuk.

They enjoyed safe passage til they declared war at the enemy capital, on 13 October.

18 October they began their advance. Heinrich had lost hope in rousing speeches, and crossed his fingers that his calculations prove correct.

Whizz! An arrow flew past missing Heinrich's forehead just. The man behind was not as lucky - the heavy bronze necklace he had been wearing for 5 days into the charge bursted aflamed, shattering into a billion pieces leaving him unscathed, and began the man, "although it was a bitch to carry, I'd always knew it would come in..." before another arrow came and killed him on the spot. Heinrich was used to this by now and brooded on it no more. He kept charging and was glad that men around him did the same, still in good spirits, unlike Damascus. And they were close now, and his men knew it, and were eagar to give the enemy the taste of their steel.

battle13October.jpg
battle18Oct.jpg
battle23Oct.jpg

YES! YES! YES!

23 October marked the start of the skirmish, and happy happy Heinrich blessed his men:

"Before us, my brave men, lies a most sorry sight; their excuse of an army; no longer able to employ their womanly ways, and oh Lord preserve us how they shudder in fear!

Here we stand to deliver God's justice. So have no fear carrying out his work, but feel proud and strong in his name. And let them pray mercy as they will need it in heaven where they will be judged soon enough.

As we go onward, remember this; we have braved through hails of arrows, worked so hard for the past five days. Nothing can testify our noble spirit better than that. And as God's chosen, let us together deliver his judgement."

"Guelph! Guelph! Guelph!!!" roared the men in reply.

Heinrich's army outnumbered their foes almost 2:1

battle26Oct.jpg

They fled on 26 October. Only the Syrians held and the odds became 1:6; so completely unfair.

He predictably lost.

"It hurts milord. Oh god no! We Germans can't beat their light units like that. Our advantage lies with heavy infantry and knights - a frontal, yes we can win with a full frontal."

"I'm homesick," cried the same recruit from Mosul, "I've been away for too long."

Shaking his head in dismay, Heinrich rallied his confused men to the neighbouring province.

25novmvt.jpg

But by 25 November, his enemies somehow reached Oromieh before him.

With the state of his army, Heinrich knew full well that another defeat in Oromieh could wipe them out.

He ordered a re-organisation.

Reorg.jpg

Syrians first in recognition of their bravery

And strangely enough, they weren't confused no more.

nonconfuse.jpg

Heinrich found himself in the situation he fought so hard for

siegekirkuk.jpg

They could not reach Kirkuk fast enough

It was December when Heinrich Welf was made master of Kirkuk. And he was jubilant through to Christmas.

News soon reached that the 4 Lords of Syria have returned to bite him, having convinced their King Salah ah-Din to completely bypass Jerusalem to get him.

lostsyria.jpg

Faced with new needs for defense, Heinrich was appalled by Jerusalem's progress and pondered where was the army of Christendom to protect him.

ayearaway.jpg

Just starting to move it seems

On New Year's Eve, Henry reflects on the passing year. "How did I get myself into this?" he questioned his now negative 177 ducat treasury. Has Midas forsakened me?

The recruit from Mosul had dissappointed him. Where can I find my Brilliant Strategist?

Midas appears to have well and truly forsaken him - but then he seems to more properly be a follower of Mars not Midas :)

Heinrich's defeat at the battle of Kirkuk was really a disgrace. :D

I like the Welfs, and I like your AAR. It has got light humour without needing to force it. I'm interested in how Heinrich's going to hold out until the forces of Christendom do finally deign to show up on the scene.

Rwar?

The year 1189 began with a shaky start.

Heinrich has been away from home too long.

Unrest grew from two years of high taxes and neglect, public buildings were sold to provide funding for the wars, and every month his coffers lapsed more into the red.

deadmatilda.jpg

Poor Penelope could not wait for 2 years

And surrounding his new realms were stuanch moslem enemies; Turkish emirates to the north, Khwarizism to the east, Abbasids to the south and Ayyubids to the west.

"The armies of Christendom will come dad, they will come, they will come," yelped Heinrich's son who recently came of age.

But taking advantage of Heinrich's absense, the backstabbing Hohenstaufen exiled Heinrich in-absentia the second time, and purposely delayed the Imperial Army.

war1.jpg

Not the man to sit and wait for his fate to unfold.

But it was too late;

Ahmadal-NasirAbbasid.jpg

For Ahmad al-Nasir Abbasid has hid himself in Derbent, atop the Caucasus where the Lion could not reach.

derbent1.jpg

Sadly, it was a strategy that worked. Heinrich was stretched out too thin. Should he capture Baghdad, he would not have time to capture Derbent.

"The armies of Christendom will come dad, they will come, they will come."

No they wont.

"They WILL come, they will-"

knighting1.jpg

Even with his homes affairs and finances solved, the situation was still dire.

The Luneburg regiment now serve his son. And the Turks in Kirkuk would not fight for him.

Heinrich alone stood among hordes after hordes of saracen warriors. For the lives of men who followed him faithfully, he was willing to injure his pride. Bearing the white flag, Heinrich surrendered.

INTERLUDE

Time for some FEEDBACK: Because I love Haardrade and Haardrade loves me.

I'm happy to hear the AAR's interesting as well as funny. I try to make it as interesting as I can, as my intention is to interest readers more to playing CK. As for funny, it writes itself.

Stnylan: I think the idea of one ruler is good too. But more on that we'll have a clearly defined end rather than 1460 or something, I never reached a game that far. My computer, like a space ship reaching the sun, burns up before it gets so far.

Maver1ck: All my sources comes from Wikipedia, and reading it, Henry the Lion appeared so honourable that it was such a shame to be betrayed by his cousin the Emperor. It says he died in 1195, so let us hope he could last at least that long. I'm actually scared now that he has reached 60 years old, suppose he dies, should I reload? If not, how do I explain it congruently, and if so, til how long should I prolong him?

Stnylan: Well, from the peace deal just now and the knighting of his son, he has well excess of what he started with. Moreover, he could enter another marriage gaining more gold. But then, I suppose money can run just as quick. Henry the Lion was a brilliant strategist with 22 martial stats, more than El Cid, it says so in the 1337 scenario. But in the 1187 scenario, he was somehow Midas Cursed :( losing battle after battle... after battle...

Enewald: I agree the conquest was kinda easy. And I am concerned that I might be getting too 'gamey' not just from the last one, but also for the many updates to come. But then again, 3000 men must be ruthless conquering the middle east and all.

The_Guiscard: It is a total disgrace, really, he has yet to win ONE battle. But for some reason they keep running away :( and I believe that one day, it would really cost him. And sadly, this is how Heinrich held out - by surrendering - its injurious to Heinrich's prestige, but I kinda planned to exploit this vassalage-liege function from the start. It's sort of 'gamey' but it also highlights the absurd maths the AI use to deal with this, that is, you can declare war with anyone and they will accept you as their vassal unconditionally and even give you all their money.

On New Year's Eve, Henry felt positive, for his treasury was positive, 153 ducats to be exact.

I am going to the beach now, so for now, I will save this post here on paradox.

A positive treasury! Will wonders never cease? :)

Henry the Lion is one heck of a strategist. You have managed to keep your small army alive surprisingly long time and even managed to gain some provinces and titles. That's great achievement.
