Information

I have verifed my game files (Steam only)

Yes

I have disabled all mods

Yes

I am running the latest game update

Yes

Required

Summary

The game begins to stutter drastically while panning every 1 to 2 seconds, even while the game is paused.

Description

The game begins to stutter while panning as my empire/realm grows independently of government type, population in the world, or any other aspects that would affect performance. The stuttering occurs while the game is paused, or while time is going. The stuttering happens every 1 - 2 seconds, once again regardless of it is paused or playing. It doesn't matter what graphical settings I have on; the issue persists. I have tried the full screen optimization fix + capping the fps at 60 + 1080p resolution, but once again nothing happens. I have uninstalled the game 3 times, the last one being a FULL clean installation (deleted all documents, moved my saved games to a different folder, and installed everything fresh). I have made the game an exemption for Antivirus checks. I have installed C++ and NET. to see if it helps, but it didn't. I have run the task manager while panning to see where the performance drops may be, but there are none. I have looked at almost every post in here that has to do with screen stuttering while panning and tried almost every fix, and nothing works. I rolled back the game to the previous version 1.14.3 and the issues weren't there, but once I updated the game back the stutter appears again. I am at the roads end. I believe I have reached the limit regarding my basic knowledge regarding Ck3 Troubleshooting. This issue is out of my grasp.

I have a 13th Gen Intel(R) Core (TM) i9-13900K 3.00 GHz processor, 32.0 GB of RAM, an NVIDIA RTX 4090, water cooling directly to my CPU. My computer is top tier. Performance is not the issue.

I would like to make emphasis to what I mentioned. The issue is not present in update 1.14.3, and instead only appeared since the latest update.

Steps to reproduce

Open the save. Begin panning across the map. Every one to two seconds the screen should stutter while panning (WASD or mouse). You must have a large realm for it to trigger (AKA Byzantines and HRE together realm size), so the safe will reflect this.

Game Version

1.15

Platform

Windows

As an update, I have been using MSI Afterburner to monitor the FPS drops. They occur every second, and the drops are of about 20 fps in my current campaign (the one where I first noticed the issue). I began a new game to test it in conjunction with MSI afterburner. I chose Castille and began panning while paused. No FPS drops every second (they occur at random, but that's just Ck3 being Ck3). Then I began to use commands to take titles until I saw a drop in FPS. It began with 5 fps, then when I took more land, it was 10 fps. Then I took even more land, and it was 20 fps. Then even more land to the point that it got to 60 fps drops (from 165).

Game is paused and it still happens. You can see it when you pan the screen, but MSI proves that it occurs regardless of panning or not. It is noticeable as it is a constant drop. This is driving me insane, and I don't know what else to try. Please help me.

Can confirm this is also happening to me - originally thought it was a Ck3AGOT issue, but checked w/ the rest of the game in vanill and it’s any large realm. PLEASE fix devs!!!

I've recently completed a Roman world conquer run to get the 'Lingua Franca' achievement, I also suffered the map panning issue you mention, along with originally suffering the diabolical slowdowns compounded by running as administrative government which forced me to switch to feudal for a "slight" speed up. As a test I switched characters to a landless adventurer and then the game ran normally again... so it's not the fact that there exists a giant empire in the game, it's simply that the player is running one. Other issues I noticed, was even while paused UI elements grind to a crawl too, opening portraits or council screen etc all stutter into place - this only happens while running a large empire.

Although I quit my Roman run soon as I got the achievement due to the slowdowns being very much not fun anymore, I still have the save - I can provide if needed, but I also just loaded it up out of curiosity and sure enough, all problems exist; map scroll jittering even while paused, UI jittering when trying to open decisions\council\etc, and a massive slowdown in the passing of time. However soon as the empire ruler died and I selected a new ruler, I completed two tests, first being a landless adventurer and then reloaded just before death to do the second test which was a kingdom level vassal, both tests had all the issues go away immediately.

All of this has me seriously worried for the upcoming DLC and map expansion.

Wanted to add an addendum (lol) that it’s not just a panning thing and that it occurs even when paused. You can be paused at Speed 1, no panning, and the game will still “freeze” i.e. frame skip every 1-2 seconds. No fix that I know ofZ

I concur with everything you mentioned. As I mentioned in my post, I rolled back the update to 1.14.3 and recreated the same steps. I started as the Byzantines, took the titles of the HRE + Tartaria + Egypt + whatever other large realm, and there was no stuttering while panning (Paused or time rolling). As soon as you switch to 1.15, it all goes to hell.

This stutter has no fix (I have tried all BUT to just do a clean wipe of my PC and I am definitely not doing that) and it was introduced with the newest update. I can't continue my save because when the stutter begins, it just gets worse the more territory your empire has. It gets to a point that it just looks like the screen is tearing or something.

I can't keep playing until they fix this, and the worst part is that they even haven't acknowledged that this is an ongoing issue. If they release a patch and this isn't fixed, I will lose my mind.

Same issue as well. More noticeable in a sub mod like GoT when you control the Iron Throne just get little 1-2 lag even when paused when scrolling the map too even when paused. Turning off animated portraits doesn’t help either.

Exact same way I noticed it. Downloaded an earlier version of AGOT and reversed the beta of the game, and no problem there. Hopefully Paradox fixes it next update.

Ya I would feel more confidant in this issue to be resolved if a paradox Dev member responds to this thread cause it’s really a vanilla issue more then anything else and the initial bug report was vanilla based.

1. Quick Fix: You are gonna need to turn off the one thing you really hate to turn off, and it's Advanced Shader Effect.
Pay attention to how hot the game is running. This is an unfortunate part when Tours and Tournaments were intorduced. It will only get worse form here.

2. The long fix is to tell the devs to fix cap Refresh Rate, not frame rate, Refresh Rate. The game does not adhere to the default setting for capped Refresh rate and it usually runs the highest.
The only way to set Refresh Rate is in PDX launcher, and PDX will ignore your setting the next time you launch it, and the setting itself is saved, but not actually working. Check that. I believe this will drastically helps performance and limiting GPU temp.

Thanks for the tips but sadly turning off shader effects didn’t work I still get the 1 to 2 second lag when panning the map and if I look closely at the char I’ll see a little lag on the char itself for a brief second or so Even while pause. As others stated the problem started with 1.15.0 so hopefully we are drawing enough attention so the team is aware.

Didn’t quite understand long fix number 2 as there is no refresh cap setting in the launcher settings for me just turn off v sync or not.

Any chance we can get some dev feedback on this issue that's it being looked into? While it's not prevalent right away when you start a new game this does eventually become a problem as the game rolls on and the bigger empires like the HRE or Byzantines in the Vanilla CK3 experience expand... Obviously this a lot easier to see in a TC Mod like GoT where you get the Iron Throne and it's massive empire and since from reading comments this wasn't here before 1.15, my hope is this is being looked into.

If it helps!, my specs are:

Operating System: Windows 11 - 64 bit
Processor: Intel Core I9-14900KF
Memory: 32 GB
Card name: Geforce RTX 4090
Native Mode: 3440x1440

this problem is persistent in Dx11 mode or Vulkan I use Vulkan because of that occasional Hard Lock up on initialization game screen you get when using Dx11 due the Windows update back January sadly, hope that too is solved one day, but I'm more concerned about this issue honestly.

Everyone on this thread has tried these fixes. They were initially recommended to me on the troubleshooting forum, but they did nothing. I wish there was a fix for this, anything. Anything that would mitigate it. Anything that would just fix it. But there isn't. Not even that mod from 1.7 that says stutter fix. Not even putting the graphics on potato mode. Nothing. It is super annoying and it forces you to just play in a small empire in the fear that the moment you begin expanding like any gameplay would require you, then you get hit with the unceasing stutter that gets progressive worse the more you expand.

Thabks for the recommendation though.
