Are you trying to continue a campaign started under the previous 1.0.x patches? Or is this one you started new under 1.1 ?
If the former, try a new campaign, see if that runs okay. If it does, you'll need to revert to the previous patch you had (probably 1.0.6) in the Steam Betas tab for the game.
