The Greater Good (A History of the Toran Empire)

The Toran Home world:

Located to the Galactic West, the planet of Tor’vas is the second planet orbiting the star of Olan’Sha (the Life Giver). Though scientific expeditions have revealed that the Toran are not the first civilisation to emerge in the system, they are most certainly the only ones who have managed to develop interstellar travel.

A warm planet, covered in sweeping savannahs, arid scrub land and warm sea’s oceans, Tor’vas is a Veld class world. Though its weather systems are relatively stable, that is not to say life has been or is easy to maintain. Forming their early settlements in the shadow of mighty tree’s, that stretch up tens of miles in hight, with root systems expanding hundreds of miles, without these colossal giants the Toran species would have never progressed beyond the stone age, for it was these strange oasis that allowed the Toran to plant crops, fed by the water these tree’s drew up from deep below, and offered grass lands for the early hunters to stalk prey-beasts.

The Toran People:
A reptilian species, standing on average five foot and seven inches, the Toran are a stocky and well-set species, dense bones and scaled skin allowing them to survive in rather difficult environments for extended periods. Unusual for most reptilians found on Tor’vas, the Toran give birth to live young carried over a six-month period in the female of the species, rather than hatching from eggs, allowing them in pre-historic times, a freedom of movement that others of their genus did not possess.

The evolution and development of the Toran civilisation progressed steadily until the late Renaissance era, when a series of cultural and scientific advancements, coupled with a series of natural disasters sparked war between the various communities, which spread across the whole planet, intensifying in ferocity as time passed by. During these vicious wars, several Toran subspecies were completely and utterly wiped out, their names and cultures long since turned into nothing more than archaeological footnotes. Previously prospering nation states collapsed amid the barbarism.

These wars progressed for approximately three hundred years, when according to tradition during one huge battle, the Toran were visited by what are now termed “the Shroud-walkers”, a mysterious and some say alien species, that emerged at a time of the Tor’s greatest need, starting the long and arduous process of bringing peace. These beings showed acute telepathic abilities, which proved a great aid in their struggle for a diplomatic solution, taking into their confidence various leading figures of the Toran spiritual community, they are said to have revealed wonderous and terrifying visions of the future.

20221130004642_1.jpg

Some saw in these visions the glorious rise of the Tor’s to the crowning power of an inter-galactic empire, others saw the extinction and destruction of Tor’vas itself, witnessing the blasted and lifeless silence that would come if the war continued. Amid these spiritual leaders, the Toran’s own latent telepathic powers emerged and a new caste, appeared at the very top of their culture intent on saving their species from annihilation.

In the years that followed, the whole structure of Toran society was changed, independent nation states were done away with, various government types where abolished and a governing council formed at the pinnacle of a new caste system, thus came the election of Voka Hask’Elohim, the very first ruler of All Tor.

The Toran Government and Caste System:
Ruled by the Farseer Council, the members of this particularly body almost all possess psychic abilities and have demonstrated a clear ability to reach out to the Shroud-walkers, whom although leaving Tor’vas during the first great peace, maintained constant communion with their new wards.

The council elects from its number, one single individual, known as either the Voka (male) or the Vola (female) who is given absolute authority over the planet and its citizenry. Whilst it is customary for the Voka/Vola to consult with the Council on all major decisions, it is not actually a requirement, since it is deemed the election is influenced and sanctified by the Shroud-walkers, who can see far beyond, the average telepaths, down the twisting webs of fate. The members of this caste who are not members of the Council, but serve in the Temples, are referred to as the Ethereal order.

Beneath the Farseer Council is the Water Caste, a teaming body of bureaucrats, scientists, diplomats, civil-servants, clerks, magistrates, artists and such like, whom oversee the running of the state and the advancement of Toran culture These individuals are usually marked out at an early age, when testing is conducted in primary education on the planets younglings, particularly high levels of emotional or academic intelligence assuring them of a brilliant if somewhat rigorous education. Without this caste, the very mechanisms of state could not function, government business is run through their hands, treaties and contracts signed by them, resources distributed, and justice pours from their cup.

The next caste is the Fire Caste, who form the backbone of the Toran military, not only its commanders but also its foot soldiers and police. Training is exceptional and intensive, natural aggression, physical strength and obedience being amongst the most highly sort after qualities. During their training, initiates are not only schooled in the arts of war and combat, but they are also coached extensively in history, philosophy and spirituality, to ensure they do not simply fight for the sake of fighting but do so out of a sense off moral right and spiritual endeavour. The rewards of soldiering are considerable, since on the successful completion of service, soldiers, commanders, and civil-police alike are awarded either a plot of land or a cash-lump some followed by a life-long pension, ensuring the keepers of the peace, feel the benefits of maintaining that peace long after their service is performed.

The Air caste are amongst the most heavily reformed of the caste structure, they originally performed the role of messengers and merchants, nowadays however, they not only keep open their roles as merchants and messengers, overseeing communication hubs and trade agreements, they also now oversee the intelligence service employing spies and informants across Torvas. They also control our space stations and fleets, their members pilot our ships and control the space lanes, teaming up with the water-caste to design new vessels and oversee the deployment of our space ports, their main base of operations now being the Star Gate Station that floats high above Torvas.

The Earth Caste are the final rung of the caste system, made up of farmers, labourers, artisans, crafters, technicians and mine workers, their task being always to ensure the citizenry has all it needs to prosper and thrive. Whilst it maybe said the other castes are the ones who contribute most to maintaining the peace on Torvas, in truth it is the prosperity that the earth castes workers have provided that stop civil war erupting once more to consume them all.

The Philosophy of the Greater Good:
Whilst many Tor still hold onto their ancient beliefs in Gods and spirits, the most commonly held and stated sponsored philosophy is that of the Greater Good, first given to the Tor by the Shroud-walkers and penned down by the original Farseers it has come down the ages almost unchanged.

The basic concept of the Greater Good, is that order, justice, harmony and co-operation between the orders are the bedrock of continued peace on Tor’vas. Every Tor is born to play their part within society, and they are expected to contribute every effort toward the strengthening of that One Order. It is commonly accepted that whilst the Tor operate as individuals, they should always seek to put wider society and the overall survival of their species before personal longevity, even to the point of being willing to die in defence of the Greater Good and its ideals; kith and kin, being secondary, personal advancement and prosperity coming after that. A prime example being amongst the scientific community, for whilst scientists will be amply rewarded for technological advances, they are forbidden from monopolising the profits of these discoveries and any breakthrough in research or application, is the property of the state and not the individual.

Equally curious and yet somewhat startling is that death and war are not seen as being in contradiction to the Greater Good, but simply another arm by which the Toran species as a whole may survive, thus execution for treason is still practised, disobedience in military office can offer life imprisonment or death, along with a dozen other crimes and misdemeanours. Order is all that matters, the preservation of the species as a whole, the continued survival off Tor’vas as the Toran Home-world and the maintenance of the Caste system.

No doubt reaching into the stars may challenge this strict ethos but then it is the belief of the Farseer Council that the reason for space flight, is to spread the notion of the Greater Good, into the very heavens themselves, to bring order and harmony to what many belief is a very real existential threat to their way off life.

It's interesting that the Tor aren't the first sapient species on their planet. What happened to the other ones?

Where the Shroud-walkers aliens? Are the Tor now psionic - and, if so, might they discover... other things?

A space fleet is being built. That's probably a good idea, but it characterizes the Tor as paranoid...

Your precursor was the Irrasians? Did they leave anything behind besides the precious metals?

Well, it seems like the Irassians were once very mighty indeed...

Is looking for a plague that wiped out an advanced empire really a good idea? How do you know that it won't wipe you out?

Well, it appears like the precursors left behind some things for the Tora to pick up.

Life in an isolated cave system? That is interesting... especially since the planet is otherwise inhabited. I wonder what the Tora will do there?

Please note:- Due to an update on one of my mods, the saved came has become uncompatable and so I have reset the game the original discussion on the Tor, remains unchanged, but I will have to start the game again.

That's unfortunate (and why I seldom use mods).

Chapter 1: The First Expedition (Age of Exploration)

Vola Namata:- The Private Office of the Vola, The Palace of Light, Tor’vas, 01.01.2200

Namata sat at her beautifully ornate desk, a gift from the regional governor of Khandar, in the south of Tor’vas on her election but a few short weeks earlier. At her desk a dozen different miniature-data cores were waiting for her review, though she was currently preoccupied examining the design of the new science vessel being constructed.

The ISS Entrepid, as it was to be named, would join the ISS Valiant, in the first Toran scientific expeditions outside of the Olan’sha system, and she wished to know every detail of the ships, their crew and their missions before giving the order to depart, though that left her but days to get a grip off all the intel she had been provided from the Air Castes officers.

A lithe and finally dressed figure entered the chamber, Torba’Vala the High Chamberlain of the Palace. “Holiness, Governor Sornas is here to see you” she bowed gently, “shall I show him in?”

“I wasn’t aware we had an appointment today?” the Vola did not even bother to look up from her data-tablet.

20221210151838_1.jpg

“You do not Holiness, but he said he has government business to run passed you” Torba’Vala smiled softly, she knew that Sornas was not the Vola’s ideal choice for Governor, but nevertheless he had been in office longer than her and his experience was invaluable.

“I suppose you had best show him in, in that case” she sighed heavily, placing down the data-tablet on the desk and waving away the servant who had been sorting through state papers on the smaller desk beside her. Torba’Vala bowed again and made back for the main door, the backs of two palace guard just visible through the grand doorway the entered into the private office.

It was only a few moments before the doors swung back open, and the short, stocky figure of Hask’Sornas made his way into the chamber, a gentle bow of the head rather than the customary bow, reminding the Vola, that he had not personally supported her election and was still a little hostile.

Namata forced a smile, For a man who comes from such humble origins you certainly think a lot of yourself Sornas, she mused to herself, the danger of him reading her thoughts nullified by her own extensive training in shielding her mind from intrusion, aside from which the Governor had never shown particular aptitude for the psychic arts.

“Holiness, thank you for seeing me at such short notice!” he smirked, taking a seat without invitation and pouring for himself a cup of wine.

“I assume it is urgent business, if it has brought you to the palace without an appointment?” Namata tried to mask her irritation at his apparent familiarity.

“Not overly urgent no” he retorted, but handing her a miniature data-core, “these are the new ship designs for our fleet and I promised the heads of the Air and Water Castes, that I would seek your immediate approval to have the vessels commissioned so work can begin!”

“Are we in need of new warships? I am not aware of any impending threat to our security?” she had only recently consented to the construction of three new vessels and was conscious of the expenditure already mounting up, just weeks into her reign.

“It pays to be cautious Vola” he deliberately stopped using the title, Holiness, as a clear rebuke, “these ships may not be needed immediately, but only you and the Shroud-walkers know what the future holds!”

Vola Namata:- The Private Gardens of the Palace of Light, Tor’vas, 09.01.2200

A chill wind blew across the gardens and frost spread like a thinly laid carpet along the grass, hedges rows and shrubbery, even the gardens fountains were muted, either turned off or frozen offer, in this rare blast of chill which had descended upon the capital.

Walking slowly, through a mid-morning mist, Vola Namata was wrapped up in thick robes with a fur trimmed hood pulled over her head, whilst at her side, Captain Toba’Namara, soon to be commissioned as the commander of the ISS Entrepid.

“I have to thank you for this opportunity” Namara smiled at her companion, her breath catching on the air, “I know there were others who had applied, and it can’t have been easy to have my appointment confirmed!”

Namata laughed, “I am the Vola, my word it seems is law” she looked straight ahead, “the fact is you were the most qualified for the position!”

“And the fact I am your big sister did not play a part?” there was the sense of enquiry and sarcasm in her tone.

“Certainly not” Namata snapped, not an wisp of humour in her voice, “you were the best suited for the job” she turned her face slightly toward her companion, “I was your sister, Namara, but now I am the Vola” she turned once more to the path ahead, gravel crunching under foot, “I renounced any ties to family or Caste in my oath of office, my only concern now is the success and preservation of our people!”

“As you say Vola” Namara stopped in her tracks bowing her head, casting her eyes to the floor, “I meant no offence!”

Suddenly the Vola grabbed the Captains arm, a broad grin beaming across her face, “Don’t be so formal Namara, for heaven sake, you will always be my sister in once sense or the other!”

20221210152312_1.jpg

Governor Hask’Sornas:- The Government Offices, Tor’vas, 15.02.2200

The whole room burst into sudden chatter as the holo-projection of the Vola vanished from the desk’s centre, the whole desk was filled with ministers of state, many off whom were suddenly turning to their aids and agents, passing hushed commands behind them.

Hask’Sornas, Governor of Tor’vas rose from his seat, handing a pile of data-slats to one of his secretaries, “Well friends, you have heard what the Vola wishes us to do” he glanced along the table, making eye contact with the key ministers, “Agree with it or not, nevertheless it is her wish!”

20221210152107_1.jpg

Torba’Telil, Minister for Interstellar Exploration, scowled in the Governors direction, clearly unimpressed at Sornas’ willingness to publicly criticize the will of the Vola. “I think it would be best if I went up to the Star Gate” she turned sharply, directing a number of her staff to make for the door, “If these readings are correct, it would make things easier if I could co-ordinate our response directly, rather than relying on secondary communications!”

“Agreed” Hask’Sornas, did not bother to even look up at his minister, packing away his papers into a case and handing these to another aid. He turned to another member of the meeting, “Hask’Velum will make you some office space available, in case your stay up there needs extending!” Hask’Velum was the Air Castes, chosen commander of the Star Gate, Space Port.

The meeting had been convened to discuss unusual readings picked up on the long-range sensors of the ISS Valiant as it made its way to the edge of the Olan’sha system on its first mission. These hard fortunately originated in the Hark system, too the Galactic South and not currently on the ISS Valiant’s mission brief. Nevertheless, they had caused quite a stir amid the scientific community, who had suggested these particular readings showed not only unusual heat patterns, a second signal, mirrored with its movements indicated a vessel perhaps.

Torba’Telil, Minister of Interstellar Exploration: - The Star Gate (Space Port), 21.02.2200

“You are to stay on course Captain Keldi”, Torba’Telil looked down at her data-slat, the bridge view of the ISS Valiant, almost crystal clear, despite the ever growing distance. The ISS Valiant was heading on its first mission, to the Lombidus System and despite the recent readings picked up in the Hark System, the Minister was keen to not deviate from her original schedule.

“As you wish Minister” the captain could be seen reclining quiet comfortably in her chair, members of her crew going about the tasks all around her. “I will report back when we are ready to enter the hyper lane! Keldi out!”

The door to the Ministers new office suddenly sounded, alerting her that her next appointment had arrived, and she pressed the button to allow the door to open. Two very handsome and smartly attired Tor entered ad bowed respectfully.

“Ahh my friends come in and welcome” Telil smiled genuinely, “take a seat will you both and we shall get started!” she directed them to two armchairs and she herself moved to a third.

Hask’Valgam and Hask’Ekalim were amongst the finest minds of the Water Castes diplomatic corps, both also having qualified from the Institute of Biology and Social Sciences on Tor’vas, they both sat expectantly, as and aid handed them a data-slat each.

“You will, I hope have read in full the report I sent down earlier this week detailing what we know so far about the readings we detected in the Hark system” she paused, checking for their acknowledgement, “Our sensor teams believe these anomalies come from two separate sources and so I have assigned one to each off you” again she paused, allowing the two Tor to engage the files they had been handed and scanning them briefly, “You are to report to myself directly with your findings and I have given you security access to a number of systems that I am sure you will need to investigate properly” she reached down to her own, data-slat and entered a series of commands, “I have also met with the station commander and his own team, and the Air Caste has agreed to lend you access to their longest reaching scout jets and a both off you will also receive a team of engineers, scientists and sensory experts to help you in your task! Any questions?”

20221210152006_1.jpg

20221210152015_1.jpg

“Just one Minister if I may?” Hask’Ekalim, he waited for her concent before continuing with a smirk, “I hear my partner here” he leaned toward Valgam with a smile “has quarters with a window view off Tor’vas and I wonder if we might swap” he chuckled allowed, at the sudden surprise appearing on the Ministers face, his partner laughing also.

“It’s a bloody nightmare as it is getting the agreement of the Air Caste to occupy the rooms we have so far” she was obviously amused at his question, getting up and returning toward her desk, “Be grateful for what you have, or I will send you to be housed in the main crew quarters!”

They both rose, laughing at one another, good friends after many years of shared study at the institute, making for the door, “Goodnight Minister” Valgam bowed and left, following behind his work-mate.

Vola Namata:- The Private office of the Vola, The Palace of Light, Torvas, 28.02.2200

Her patience was running thin and her temper rising, tapping the desk with irritation, “I will not be swayed on this Sornas, I have ruled on it and that ruling is final!” her tone firm, sat across the desk from her the three Ministers looked distinctly unimpressed.

“Well I can only say, with all due respect I believe you are in error Vola” Governor Sornas looked to his colleagues hoping for their agreement, “rather than dispatching science vessels to look at these readings, if they are as it is believed alien life, it would be better to send our military vessels ahead!”

“A show of strength, is what I believe the Governor believes would work best, Holiness” the Minister of Defence, and current head of the Fire Caste, Hask’Endo interjected.

“I know exactly what the Governor believes, thank you Endo” she returned the remark with grace, “however, a show of strength is only worth showing if we can guarantee we have the strength to carry that through” she turned back to the Governor, her gaze sharpening, “At this time we do not possess that knowledge, and I have no desire to bring down the anger of a far superior foe potentially crashing down from the heavens before we have given it due consideration and proper investigation!”

“But Holiness” Torba’Shanon, the Minister for Finance and Resources leaned forward, “we have your consent to begin work on the proposed defence platform designs drawn up by the Air and Fire Castes joint commission? As a cautionary measure?”
20221210152808_1.jpg

20221210152734_1.jpg

Namata pressed her thumb firmly onto her data-slats bio reader, “That I will agree to “ she looked up, feigning pleasantness, “ I have also just added my authorisation to begin construction on the new ship design that has been proposed and I am sure the Earth Caste commanders will be happy to assist you in making the materials available!”

Well, it looks like there are a lot of militarists. How xenophobic are they?

It's nice to see that the ministers are willing to risk their lives too. Helps make them more relatable than faceless bureaucrats to the crew and probably to any future aliens

They are a militaristic species, but not overly xenophobic or Xeno-philic

Chapter 2: To boldly go

Hask’Ekalim:- Scout-jet, the Hark System, 15.03.2200

“Revert to auxiliary power” Ekalim sat at one of jets control panels, having partaken a brief training course with the Air Castes pilots, with the limited space for crew the light vessel had a small crew off only four members, “lets take us in nice and quiet, I have no wish to attract attention!”

“Yes commander” the Ensign obeyed the order instantly, an the little vessel slowed its pace quickly, “We will need to stir clear of the stars gravity well, if we are to prevent ourselves being caught in its pull!” the Ensign, set a course without need for further instruction.

“Engage our sensors to maximum, Torba’Kos” Ekalim turned only slightly to glance over at the young officer in charge of readings, he tapped the ships intercom, “Hask’Kola if you will prepare the probe ready for launch” looking up at the view screen, “Ensign we will need to find the best position we can to engage the probe without interference, if you could find us a course?

“Already on it commander”, the Ensign, Torba’Vas, was a skilled pilot, with clear ambition and should all go to plan, she would receive an exemplary recommendation for Ekalim for her work.

Hask’Ekalim:- Scout-jet, the Hark System, 16.03.2200

The probe had begun only minutes before to return images to the jet, now displaying them on the main viewer. The images on display had struck dumb the entire crew, apart from Ekalim who was stood up, peering over the images with deep intent, gripping his chairs back tightly.

“My friends, today your names will go down in the history of our people for being the first Tor to encounter life from beyond our world” he paused, amazement filling his voice, “And what wonders that is!”

20221210151950_1.jpg

“I didn’t in my wildest dreams believe we would find these out here” the sensor officer was shaking with excitement and no doubt some fear, turning in her chair to look over the readings now flooding across her screen. “Initial reports commander would suggest we sit just outside of the vessels sensor range” she was referring to the bizarre alien craft floating in orbit on the opposite side of the system, “It is obviously impossible to tell about the life-form, what it can see, if it can SEE at all, but I think we are at a safe distance!”

“Considering how well armed that vessel looks” Ekalim swiped across the readings on his own screen, “if these energy spikes do actually represent weapon platforms, then its curious that they are so near to one another!”

Ensign Vas made some minor adjustments to their position and the jet lurched slightly to one side, trying to keep in the shadow off the barren planet they were orbiting, “Maybe the ship doesn’t view it as a threat?”

20221210151942_1.jpg

“That would seem fair” Ekalim agreed, “but I have no desire to test what it will make off us!” the commander turned to the sensor officer, standing behind her and looking at her readings, “Get as much as we can before the probe runs out of power or is detected and then I think we shall make a swift exit back to the Star Gate!”

Captain Torba’Namara:- The Bridge of the ISS Entrepid, the Lytirin System, 12.11.2200

The atmosphere of Lytirin III was highly toxic and the probes they had sent down had been damaged by intense winds passing in the upper atmosphere, only a handful of the probes launched had made it to the designated site in tact and the information they were returning was startling.

Far below the noxious clouds, these small probes had detected buildings and structures stretching for miles across the planets surface, and alien complex for sure but devoid off life, what ever had befallen the inhabitants was unclear but no trace could be found.

“Torba’Namara to main engineering” she pressed her inter-com, the lead officer replying quickly, “What are your thoughts on landing a shuttle down on the planet’s surface, commander?”

20221210152418_1.jpg

“Slim captain, very slim indeed” came the cautious reply, “We would need to seriously improve our deflector strength and I am unsure if the shuttlers we have aboard have the engine capacity to return to the ship and that is if they even manage to breach the winds in the upper atmosphere!”

“See what you can do commander, this is a golden opportunity and I would have every option covered before we move along!” Namara was keen to get a closer look and whilst the probes had provided a good degree of intel as they began mapping the settlements structures, they would not be as revealing as an away-teams eyes.

Vola Namata:- Her private office in the Palace of Light, Tor’vas, Olan’sha System, 24.12.2200

The light of Olan’sha was just beginning to set over the capital and the Vola was still sat at her desk reading over the reports sent back by the various science teams over the last few weeks. The discovery of a lost civilisation was by far the most astounding discovery yet made and this evening, when she had finished reading through all off the information obtained, she would broadcast the discovery to the whole planet. The Minsters and Governor Sornas had urged her to caution, wanting to avoid an unnecessary panic, but she had resolved that all to soon the information would leak out regardless as the various crew members communicated with there families.

Only the other day whilst walking down the palace corridors she had overheard several bureaucrats, gossiping about the alien vessel discovered in the Hark system and its colossal companion. Sensors had suggested the unidentified lifeform was moving toward the hyper-lane that connected their two systems and she had absolutely no desire for an incident to occur should the mining shuttles teams working on the systems edge cross paths with this mighty beast. She had seen images off the creature and from repeated observations by scouting teams it had been deduced that the being was relatively harmless if left alone floating and feeding around gas giants.

20221210153200_1.jpg

Having met with the Farseer Council and the various Caste Leaders earlier that day, she had made her views and decisions known. Whilst the caste leaders largely supported Governor Sornas view that the space-born lifeform should be killed if it entered Toran space and the automated ships should be destroyed, the Council had agreed with the Vola that a peaceful and cautionary approach was best.

It had also been decided that in the morning, the Farseer Council would meet again and they would collectively reach out to the Shroudwalkers in the hope off receiving some divine revelation as to the new discoveries.

Vola Namata:- The Hall of Communion in the Palace of Light, Tor’vas, Olan’sha System, 25.12.2200

The council members took their seats, six Farseers in all taking up the inner circle, behind them the four castes had sent their respect leaders, three each from each Caste to observe the proceedings. Vola Namata stood at their centre beside a large plinth, a cloth layed over its top, hiding from view the Heart of Peace, the Eye of Tor’vas also known as the Shroud-stone.

The stone had fallen from the heavens in the time just after the first of the Shroudwalkers had reached out to the minds of the Tor and whilst those initial communications had been sporadic and largely came in the form of dreams and visions, the stone had been found to possess a unique power; direct connection to the Shroudwalkers themselves. Since those times it had been set down in law that only members of the Farseers order could touch the stone and only the Voka or Vola could decide if and when the stone was to be used, since the very act of communion was viewed as a sacred action and only those posing keen control of their species psychic abilities could handle the visions and emotions the stone bequeathed without serious damage to their body or minds, and even then, the most powerful psychics and priests could find the experience jarring.

An attendant stepped forward removing the fine covering from the stone, whilst another stepped forward wafting a blend of incense and spices over it, all in attendance, except Namata averted their eyes, for it was said to gaze into the stone without clear intention was itself damaging. The Vola stepped closer, raising out her hand tentatively, within the stone deep clouds of purple could be seen reeling, lightning, and storms in far off places flared, eyes and whispers began to rise from the glass like surface, calling out to her.

For a handful of moments Namata held back, almost about to withdraw her hand but then at last she touched her fingers to the stones surface and it gripped her hand tightly. Her arm stiffened, her body jerking, her head tossing back, and her breath suddenly caught in her chest. Her mind was whirling as the voices came crashing in and the sound off howling etheric winds battered her senses, the room vanished in a heartbeat.

Her ethereal body traversed the stars, the cold dark of the void touching at her soul for a moment, burning it like the fire caused by ice waters, dark visions and monstrous entities seemed to linger far away in the distance, and suddenly it calmed. A great peace descended upon her thoughts, her etheric body forming itself once more into a coherent shape as she found herself stood in a dimly lit room, surrounded by figures robed in deep red gowns, these were the Shroudwalkers, the Shadow Enclave, the Peace-bringers.

Wait, are the Tiyanki the Shroudwalkers lore-wise?

It seems as if the Epsilon Aliens are very advanced. I wonder if this will lead the Tor to invest in advancing their military technology?

Sub-chapter: Lytirin II

Captain Torba’Namara:- The Surface of Lytirin II, the Lytirin System, 09.07.2201

Namara tapped one of the little bio-jars on the table, the strange little life-form retracting its tendrils as it sensed the vibrations, “They are quite marvellous little things aren’t they” Namara turned to the biologist behind her, “this one is a curious little beauty!”

“And quite deadly I assure you Captain” the biologist only turning ever so slightly to note which specimen her captain was referring to.

“Deadly?” she looked ever the more closely, “such a delicate creature hardly looks dangerous!”

digi-5.jpg

“And there in I suppose is what makes it all the more lethal, it appears harmless” the officer but down her data-recorder and moved beside the captain, moving the jar around slightly, “The tendrils off this particular specimen are coated in a toxin that can dissolve flesh and though the wound it inflicts may only be small, the poison then moves into the blood stream rapidly, congealing blood at an astonishing rate and putrefying the flesh!”

“And this one?” Namara pointed to another bio-jar, inside which a strange yellow mollusc was clinging to the glass.

“Harmless enough to you or I” she moved the jar-closer, “but from the observations of this fellow in its natural habitat it is quite the ferocious predator” she handed over a data-slat from the table detailing the region the specimen was acquired. It had like the previous specimen, been found in coastal rock-pools on the eastern shore line not far from their current location. The initial observation report detailed it to be a carnivore and one of the key predators of its own domain, though judging from other species found across Lytirin II it was off little significance.

The Captains attention suddenly turned to another specimen jar, inside of which a tiny blue, life-form was beginning to extend its body from underneath a small shell filled with holes. “Quite the inquisitive fellow isn’t it!”

“Yes, I have done some studies on this one especially, it responds acutely to sound and vibration, it actually seems to be more stimulated when the potential for danger is around, though it has no reason to fear, since those spines cause almost anything that touches them to suffer from rapid asphyxiation!”

Namara stood up, her curiosity currently sated, “All very fascinating” she patted the biologist on the shoulder, “Name one of them after yourself my friend, I am sure the Head of the Biological Institute would not complain if we sent them back the first ever specimen of say the Torba’Nemulen Slug!” She chuckled to herself, moving for the tents exit, “keep up the good work, I have a flight to catch!”

Captain Torba’Namara:- The Surface of Lytirin II, the Lytirin System, 12.08.2201

A warm, dry wind blew across the landscape, incredibly rugged terrain stretching out for miles and miles in all direction, rocky scrub land. The away-team had established a base camp on a rocky plateau only accessible by one single path up the slope and just wide enough to allow a scout jet to land with a few tents and facilities.

“Here captain use these” the guardsman in charge of the team’s security handed Namara a pair of high-tech binoculars, “I could take you closer if you wished but it seems to be their mating season and they do not take at all kindly to intrusion of any kind.”

Placing the binoculars to here face, with a little confusion, Namara pushed a button the little device to suddenly zoom in and refocus its lenses, peering down the viewer, one could see almost as if you were stood right beside the magnificent beasts in the distance.

Six huge reptilian specimens were lumbering across the rough terrain, seemingly unconcern by heat and difficult ground, beside one specimen a “calf” could be seen trying to keep pace and even at nearly a mile distant, Namara could hear the calls of these beasts as they warned off others from crossing their path.

Scanning across the landscape, the captain noted at least a hundred more off these animals marching in small family units, all travelling in the same direction, a shallow river, breaking up the landscape, “They are moving for water?”

“Apparently not Captain” the guardsman answered, “this appears to be a migration route and such as it is, our teams who have followed these beasts for some weeks now have yet to find a single instance of them drinking” he pondered, “they seem to not require water at all, indeed we came across a corpse off one individual and when we tested its body, no traces off water could be found, they have an almost sand like circulatory system, their lungs are quite unique as well” he paused again, watching the Captain tracking the herds movement, “the planets atmosphere is rich in oxygen yet these beasts breath nitrogen, extracting it through one of the most complex respiratory systems we have ever seen.”

Captain Torba’Namara:- The Surface of Lytirin II, the Lytirin System, 28.08.2201
“They have been named Flamaxin commander, and are exceptionally territorial” the medic covered over the body of their crew member, deep scars covering his body, from thousands off little cuts and bites, “Hask’Kanha was out on a routine patrol, when suddenly they appeared over head and whilst the rest of the team took shelter, he did not have time to get away before the attack began!”

“And do we have any idea why the attack took place at all?” Namara was deeply unsettled by the loss off one off her crew, considering thus far the exploration of Lytirin II had been an exceptional success.

2e5fa895a3cf0baae8c001752c01c35d.jpg

“It would appear the team was patrolling around one off their night time roosts, high up in the hills and as they came in for the evening they caught Kanha and tried to drive him away” the medic turned, pulling off her blood stained gloves and dropping them in a bin, “I am sure death was not their intention but nevertheless it is the outcome!”

“A most unfortunate outcome and one that will certainly count against Lytirin being ear marked for colonisation” Namara knew all to well of her sisters hopes to settle Toran colonists on new worlds, and considering the landscape of Lytirin II and its numerous inhabitants it was becoming clear that this particular planet would prove challenging to any would be settler. High mountains, hilly terrain, dense scrub lands and sweeping stretches of thin earth, not exactly marking the planet out as a jewel to be plucked.

Very fascinating bit of Xenology! I especially liked the nitrogen breathing migratory quadrupeds, they seem very relatable yet different from our migratory megafauna here on earth. From where did you get those images? Is that a series or a book..?

This update notes a problem with exploring new worlds - the megafauna could be deadly. Of course, somebody has to do it...

Still, that should cause a slight decrease in interest in xenological exploration... since most people don't want to die

Chapter 3: High Mountains and Deep Caverns

Vola Namata:- The Private Office of the Vola, The Palace of Light, Tor’vas, 30.11.2201

The clouds hung grey and heavy over the capital, rain falling amid the eaves of the mighty trees whose branches covered many of the city districts beneath their boughs. The colder season had begun a little early this year and was predicted to last slightly longer than usual if the meteorologists of the Air Caste were to be believed.

“Close the window will you please” Namata looked up from her reading and the servant quickly responded to her wish.

Going back to her work, she skipped a few pages of the report she was reading, keen to get to the point rather than spend hours looking over the intel of the various species found and investigated by Captain Keldi and her crew whilst mapping Lombidus II. Both science vessels had detailed a huge plethora of life and acquired many specimens they wished to send back to the Institute of Biology for study, whilst a half dozen scientists from the College of Engineers and the Institute of Physics had applied for permission to visit these two liveable worlds to bet study articles of interest and yet approval for either direction of travel was currently withheld.

20221210153246_1.jpg

Namata was keen to judge the habitability of Lombidus II and the likelihood of developing a colony there that could thrive and contribute to the Greater Good rather than simply being a drain on resources. Lytirin II had currently been judged too costly to colonise and then sustain that colonisation without the potential for significant loss of life and resources. Looking over this report, Namata felt pleasantly confidant that Lombidus II would prove a good candidate and instructions had already been sent to the Earth Castes and the Air Caste commanders to gather volunteers and build a ship worthy off carrying them and all the material required.

Captain Torba’Namara:- The ISS Entrepid, Saldropis System, 23.05.2202

The hour was quite late and Namara was beginning to feel herself ready for retiring to her quarters, the bridges night time crew were currently taking their hand-over reports from the previous team, though Namara’s second in command was yet to come up to the bridge. She tapped in a few commands on her control panel ready to hand command systems over to replacement.

The ISS Entrepid was currently observing an alien structure on the edges of the Saldropis system, extensive reports had suggested the structure was a gateway which when activated might provide travel through a currently unknown type of space, but these where only hypotheses based on the sub-space energy signals an unusually sporadic atomic and energetic readings coming out of the structure.

“Commander Hask’Paro to Captain Namara” the internal comm-links engaging, “I am on my way Captain, I have read the handovers and your welcome to take yourself off!”

20221210153427_1.jpg

“Namara to Hask’Paro, understood commander, I shall see you in the morning, Namara out!” and with that she disengaged her comm system, and got up from her chair making for her quarters located at the back of the bridge, “Night all!” A few crew members wishing her a good sleep, others just continuing with their work.

It was but a few minutes later that she had changed into her nightwear and the lights dimmed, sitting on the edge of the bed the captain gazed out of her window at the distant light of the Saldropis star. The Entrepid had finished its exploration of the Lytirin System the previous year and then had been recalled to Tor’vas, to be welcomed into the capital like conquering heroes. Namara had had frequent meetings with her sister the Vola, being questioned at length on the wonders of Lytirin II, and some off her team had been granted permission to leave the ISS Entrepid to take up planet-based mission’s surveying the new worlds and their species. They had then been dispatched here to the Saldropis system, where extensive studies awaited them considering the number of planets and planetoids in orbit of the central star.

Far from Tor’vas though she was, she wondered how much further they would travel, what wonders and dangers awaited them, she pondered on her family and her sister, who was not without enemies, whispers came to her mind and Namara lay back softly on the pillow. She was not the psychic her sister was, hence, why she had joined the scientific institute. But out here, amid the void and away from the din of other Tor, the voices in the darkness where easier to hear, like whispers in the heavens, she could when she was especially tired, just lay, with her eyes closed and eaves-drop on these half-spoken dreams.

Vola Namata:- The Star Gate Space Port, Olan’sha System 23.05.2202

The little shuttle eased in gently, passing through the space ports deflector after but a seconds pause, Namata could here a constant rely off commands and permissions being exchanged by her pilots as they made entry. This was her first visit to the Star Gate, and she anticipated a very busy schedule with a series of speeches, meetings, and broadcasts.

They had timed the visit perfectly, having left well before dawn would break over the capital to ensure the very first capital broadcasting channels would show Namata all over the morning news. She herself had hoped as Vola she would be above such petty acts of statecraft and propaganda but Torba’Vala, the High Chamberlain had politely reminded her that it was naivety to believe the Vola could be above such things, the people after all needed to see their leader leading.

An officer suddenly stuck his head through the cabin door, “We will be landing proper in a few moments Holiness, there is a little bit of congestion moving a mining cargo vessel out of the landing bay” if he was daunted by speaking with her, he did not show it. Nor did he wait for her to reply before he returned to the pilot’s helm.

Torba’Vala, sitting opposite suddenly looked up, smirking slightly “Torba’Vilins office has just messaged me Holiness” she paused waiting for permission to pass her message, looking down at her little comms-device, “she will be making her way here in about an hour and a half, that thunder storm broke not long after we left, so the pilots are holding off briefly!”

Namata laughed allowed, suddenly amused, “Well never mind what time Vilin gets here now, if you wanted us to have a broadcast ready for when the capital wakes up, we are already an hour late, the thunder will have woke every Morda and her Keer, for twenty miles and more!”

20221210153539_1.jpg

“Well that is unfortunate yes!” the Chamberlain pondered a moment, irritated, the visit would still be a surprise, but it would have been better for people to wake to the news and not have it come to them once their day was well underway, “A weapons test!” she laughed, picking up a data-slat and tapping through a series of rapid commands, “You can proclaim Torba’Vilin, Admiral of the Fleet and then we shall run a weapons test and manoeuvres etc, that will cause a bit of a stir and drum up some attention!”

“You amaze me Vala, you really do” Namata gripped her seat as the shuttle landed itself down with a bump, “I thought I was supposed to be a Holy figure but it turns out I am just a minor celebrity, the same as any would be actor or singer found in the entertainment district of the capital, in need off ever greater press coverage!”

“Please Holiness” the Chamberlain laughed for a moment, then looked very serious, “with respect you are both Holy icon, celebrity and politician, like it or not!” she sounded fair but firm, “One of my jobs is to build your political capital and that is done by ensuring people see you doing your job, but also by ensuring your name is positively spoken about in more houses than your enemies speak negatively about you!”

The doors to the shuttle began to open and its little ramp extend, lights flashing as news crews and photographs wasted no time to try and catch a good picture off the Vola.

Captain Torba’Keldi:- The Bridge of the ISS Valiant, the Nigiro system, 07.07.2202

“Captain Keldi to the bridge” Keldi touched her comm-device, and a reply sounded from one of the bridge crew, “all members of the away team are back on board” she turned to help her team help one of the young engineering officers who had been wounded by a pipe bursting aboard the alien mining station. Across his body suit, there were cold scorch marks where a near freezing gas had poured out and blown him across the room, “Get him to the medical bay, Hask’No and then return to the bridge.”

“Captain we await your orders?” the commanding officer of the bridge team enquired.

“We will hold position here for now commander” she looked over the shuttle and her crew, “I think we may need to launch another few missions aboard the station whilst we have time!”

20221211154857_1.jpg

Upon entry to the Nigiro system, the ISS Valiant’s sensors had picked up unusual gaseous emissions from an asteroid and on closer inspection it had been revealed that an ancient and now derelict alien mining base had been burrowed into the hard surface. From preliminary scans aboard the station, it seemed there was colossal amounts of ore still available for extraction, suggesting that the stations use had been terminated not long after its original construction, though little sign of its builders remained.

“You know captain I reckon with a few alterations and repairs, that station could be put back into service?” the Chief mission engineer, Hask’Maro offered without invitation, always a chatty individual and one bursting with enthusiasm.

Captain Namara:- The Caves of Saldropis III, Saldropis System, 03.04.2203

The away-team kept a close formation, a heavy guard team having been deployed to support the science teams, forming a perimeter. Namara noted the commanding officer giving several quick hand gestures to his squad, their weapons fixed on the three beasts moving down below.

20221211155057_1.jpg

Great cave systems had been found below the surface of Saldropis III, cut off from the surface world above, allowing to completely separate ecosystems to evolve, sure enough they shared similar genetic origins but at some point in the distant past, due to some unknown disaster the caves had become isolated and the evolutionary paths had taken a widely varying path. Beneath the surface these caves were much warmer than the world above and dominate species down here, were reptilian in appearance.

The species they were currently tracking, Saldoran grox, were a formidable creature, standing almost double the height of a Toran adult, sporting a thick armoured hides with dense horns and claws. Fortunately, they were herbivorous, eating a wide range of mosses, fungi and lichen that covered the cavern walls. They seemed to prefer the deeper cave systems, wandering between a series off underground thermal pools connected by tunnels that stretched for miles under the mountains.
