The History of World War II (Core .85)

This AAR is a day-by-day recount of the events of World War II. This game was played using HOI 1.06c + Core .85. I will begin at the start of major hostilities. I will give events that occurred during the coarse of the war. I will summarize where there are continuous battles and not give all the details. I hope this fact based AAR will interest some of you.

The Beginnings:

The war started as a result of some fine fighting in the heat of the summer in a village no one had every heard of. The action that took place here would start the greatest war the world had ever seen. Tensions between Japan and the USSR had increase during the past few months. With Japan having successfully pushed the Chinese armies far inland, the heady smell of victory lead to a little foray into Soviet territory. In an isolated location know as Khalkin Ghol, the Japanese advanced forces, probing the Soviet defenses. Finding them weak they pushed a little farther. Stalin consulted with the local commander Zhukov on what to do. Zhukov’s reply was simple, attack. What really happened during the Soviet counter attack is anyone’s guess but it seems that the Japanese got the better of the conflict and feeling that the USSR was unprepared for war decided to push their advantage.

Two days later reports started to come in about fighting in the Far East. Although Japan felt it had an advantage and thus declared war the early fighting did not go well for Japan. The Japanese were repulsed in Vladivostok twice, once on the 13th and then again on later in the day on the 13th.

The world was not prepared for how concerned the USSR was with an active war in the East and possible war in Europe. The allies had to some extend believed that the ideological differences between Germany and the USSR would bring them to war. Reports soon came in that this was not the case. Germany was busy securing her eastern border but was not prepared to secure it to the extent that the USSR was hoping for.

Later that day the first reports of Japanese success against the USSR showed that maybe Japan had not bitten of more than it could chew.

As August came to a close tensions in Europe were very high. The English (Allied Alliance had promised, earlier in the year, that if war came between Poland and Germany that the allies would support Poland and declare war on Germany. Similar statements had been made prior to the collapse of Czechoslovakia, yet nothing came of it. So it was with no real surprise that Germany gave a final ultimatum to Poland. Poland had to decide how much help the allies could be and would they stand up with Poland against Germany. It was decided, in the Polish government that some one must stand up to Germany. With the USSR involved in a war with Japan, Poland had some right to believe that the USSR would not interfere with any war between Germany and Poland. With Poland’s stand against Germany the allies finally showed some backbone and declared war on Germany and her allies.

Opening Moves: September through December

Poland: Sept 1 to End of September, 1939

Hungary decided on September 3 to through her lot in with the Axis and joined the alliance. For the next two days there where a great many air battles as the air forces of both sides fought for control of the skies. The German air forces seemed to be having it all their way in the early going. More air battles dominated the combat new from September 6 to 10. On the 10th Germany claimed her first captured territory and more was to follow. Germany continued to make head way through Poland through out the rest of September. Poznan was captured on the 13th , followed by Torun on the 23rd and Lodz on the 24th. Last to fall in September was Cieszyn on the 25th. The German air force had a great September in Poland never having to face defeat. By the end of September it was obvious to the Poles that the allies had no intention of doing anything except wait for the Germans to attack them. With the defeat of the army on all fronts and the failure of both the air force and the navy to win any battles Poland ended September with very little hope.

Western Front: Sept 1 to End of September, 1939

The first Naval clash occurred on September 2 between Germany naval units and French naval units in the South North Sea area. This first round went to Germany. The German navy would show strongly through out September. While the Germany air force was slow to start against the allies by the end of the month it had gained unquestionable control of the skies over Germany. France began the war well winning a number of air duels with Germany, in fact France’s air force would show up the German air force through out the entire month not losing one battle to Germany. The same could not be said of the French Navy, which seems destined to lose every class with the German navy. Some say this has more to do with the absence of the British navy then anything else. It would seem the oceans are only being defended by the French navy. The British navy may have seemed to be missing but Bomber Command was making every effort to strike out at Germany. After an early success over Hanover though Bomber Command failed to hit any other targets. Bomber command also became single mindedly fixated on bombing Frankfurt am Main. All attacks in September met with loses.

Mediterranean: Sept 1 to End of September, 1939

September 6 marked the entry of Bulgaria in to the war on the side of the Axis. Bulgaria entered the war with very little skill or military technology. The hope of achieving great things was realistically placed and Bulgaria secretly just hoped she had picked the right side to join. Then in late September the British gave some hope to Bulgaria. The British made a quick decision to attempt a quick invasion of Bulgaria and get them out of the war fast. The British attempted twice to invade Varna and failed to get control of it on both occasions. This failure was not acceptable and commander changes occurred. New commanders brought renewed hope to get Bulgaria out of the war.

Far East: Sept 1 to End of September, 1939

The start of September say more action in the Far East as Soviet forces marched south into Seishin only to be repulsed by the Japanese defenses. The Japanese air forces dominated the skies, but her army could not dominate on the ground as masses of Soviet forces fought there way into Japanese territory. Orogen Zizhiqi was the first Japanese province to fall to the Soviet offensive. Followed a week later by it’s neighbour Hailar. The rest of September was dominated by the two air forces fighting for control of the skies. Late in September the Soviets added Seishin to their tally of Japanese territory. A crisis was brewing in the Japanese army, would they be able to stem the Soviet tide.

The War in October 1939

Poland: October, 1939

Germany started slow in October with a number of battles on going but soon victories were announced in Czestochowa on the 6th then Krakow on the 7th , Przemysl on the 9th followed by Warszaw on the 11th . The Polish air force, having recovered from the defeats of September put in a showing on the 18th in Torun, but by 13:00 hrs they were routed from the skies and with them went the ground forces as well. Four hours later Polish forces in Radom also withdrew. Three days later more disaster for Poland as Suwalki was lost. On the 25th a Polish counter attack was defeated in Radom. The month ended with yet another loss as Lwow fell on the 29th. It was clear, to the both sides, that this phase of the war would be over soon. Poland realized their only chance was to hold firmly to Lublin, but German forces were already on the move to attack Lublin. Time had just about run out on Poland.

Western Front: October, 1939

October say more air battles and naval battles as the land forces seemed content to stay where they were. The British continued to pound at Frankfurt am Main without success. In late October the British shifted their air focus to Würzburg hoping for some success. Very late in October after no successes the British appeared to have ended their air activity over Germany. The French air force continued to dominate the German air force. The British navy was absent again through out October, but the French navy rebounded from early defeats to dominate most of October with victories. Germany continued to defend the Reich against the British, but had continued problems with the French Air Force. After a good start the Germany navy had nothing but failure during October. October 3rd was the start of bad news for the German navy as the French handed them a defeat in Dogger Bank. On October 8th the French navy again defeated the Germany navy this time in Helgoland Bight.

Mediterranean: October, 1939

With two defeats in September the British looked as if they had given up on taking out Bulgaria. The Bulgarians had for their part become very confident that they could defend their country from the British. On October 10, the British finally were able to push the Bulgarians out of Varna. The rest of the month was spent reorganizing and formulating the next province to attack. The Bulgarians retreated and setup a new defensive line in the mountains, still very confident that they would hold the British at bay.

Far East: October, 1939
October continue the status quo, with Japan ruling the air while Soviet land forces continue to win the land encounters. National China started the month with some air activity in Zunyi but that was the extent to which China took offensive action. The Japanese army decided to attempt to retake some lost territory and Seishin was the target. Twice Japan sent forward its army and twice it came back defeated. Japans one notable success on the land was the conquest of North Kuril Island. For the Soviets October was a reorganization month as forces were redeployed for the next round of offensive action. The Soviet air force continued it’s miserable showing in the air.

The War in November 1939

Poland: November 1939

The Polish defense of Lublin finally broke on the 5th of November, with it Germany was in a great position to call for an end to the war. Poland though was not ready to give up just yet. A great naval battle had developed in the Gulf of Danzig. With the Allied victory in the Gulf of Danzig the allies finally participated with the Polish forces, unfortunately it was too little too late. Six hours after the naval battle ended the Polish naval forces were informed that they had become part of Germany. Polish leaders in an attempt to spare the country more blood shed agreed to the German demands for annexation. The war in Poland had come to an end. The Polish delegation went home to help with the disbanding of troops. Germany the announced at 9:00 am on November 9, 1939 that as part of the German Soviet agreement from August 24, 1939, the eastern half of Poland would be turned over to the Soviet Union. The Polish leaders felt completely taken advantage of. The same leaders who went home to help disband troops quickly helped to start the Polish Underground Army.

Western Front: November 1939

The French navy reverted to its usual ways in November losing more naval battles to Germany first in Helgoland Bight on the 2nd and then on the 12th in the Gulf of Danzig. In Mid November the British navy put in its first appearance with a victory over the German Navy in the Eastern English Channel. The French air force continued to show well when defending France, but suffered the same fate as the British when they went on a foray in to Frankfurt am Main. The month ended with Germany starting the first Phase in her plan to defeat the West, by declaring war on Norway. The allies quickly invited Norway into their alliance and Norway accepted. December look to be a very active month in the West.

Mediterranean: November 1939

With British success in Bulgaria, Britain decided on a two-pronged attack from her beachhead inland. The first attack was directed on Plovdiv, the second on Ruse. The first attack was a failure and on November 13th British forces retreated. The second attack was no more successful as the British retreated on November 27th. Italy entered the axis alliance on November 17th and within 24 hours great air battles sprang up all over Africa. Not much was decided but by November 20th all air activity stopped, as both sides rested and repaired their equipment. Italy ended November with a victory over the French navy in the Straits of Sicily.

Far East: November 1939

The Soviets started their new offensive with a win in Kanko on the 5th of November, this was followed up with a repulse of a Japanese counter attack in Seishin on the 8th. The air battles continued through out the Far East with each side getting in it’s share of victories and defeats. Japanese fortunes took a turn fore the better in the second week of November when she won a naval battle in Ancor Sea on the 10th and then followed that up with a land victory in Commodore on the 11th. This was followed up with a naval victory on the 15th in the sea of Bonin Islands. On the 18th the Soviets returned to the offensive winning a battle in Kange, then on the 24th in Genzan, and repulsed a Japanese attack on Vladivostok on the 25th. The month ended with Japanese victories in South Kuril Islands on the 28th and in the Korean Strait on the 30th. The Soviets continued to show well on the main land while Japanese continued to rule the seas.

The War in December 1939

Western Front: December 1939

With the declaration of war in late November all eyes were focused on Norway, waiting for the expected German invasion and naval activity. None came, instead Denmark folded under diplomatic pressure from Germany and joined the axis alliance and agreed to be Germanys puppet. Then suddenly the main Western Front came alive with the declaration of wars on both Belgium and Luxemburg on December 5th. There then commenced a great air war over Metz, Koln, Bruxelles, Arlon, and Strasbourge. In almost all cases the German Air Force won. On the 13th Luxemburg was occupied by Germany and then annexed on the 18th. The German Navy took revenge for their initial defeat fighting the British by beating them on the 27th in Quesseant. At the end of December a German attack on Strasbourg was repulsed. So the year ended for the German army with a defeat at the hands of the French. The German air force ended the year with great success over Strasbourg and the Navy ended the year with a victory over the British Navy.

Mediterranean: December 1939

After a fast start to the air war in Africa not a single air battle at all in December. The Italians started the month off well defeating the British in Bardiyah on the 10th , but then losing Kismayo on the 12th, followed by Mogadishu on the 22nd to New Zealand. France and Britian ganged up on Italy in the Straits of Sicily handing Italy her first naval defeat.

Far East: December 1939

Air battles were the order of December with both Japan and the Soviets scoring well. The Soviets finally gave as good as they got, showing a determined effort to win the air war against Japan. The ground war continued with the Soviets making headway in to Qiqihar on the 3rd, then Genzan on the 6th, followed by Sinuiju on the 8th. The Japanese navy won a battle in the Tatar Strait on the 17th. On the 21st the Soviets won another victory and captured Keijo. Japan attempted another invasion of Vladivostok but were repulsed by the 25th. As the year ended in the Far East it looked as though the Soviets would drive Japan out of Korea and were starting to make headway in the Chinese interior. Japan had managed to take some far away territory but it was obvious even to the Japanese that something had to happen with the land forces soon or they would be off of the mainland very soon.

German HQ: Report for January 1940: Sir, we have engaged the French in control for the skies of Strasbourg. It would seem that our land armies defeat has been attributed to a lack of air support during the battle. Up until Jan 10 we continued to fight for control of the air space over Strasbourg. We have had to halt operations due to severe snowstorms, but intend to continue them once the weather improves. Our units continue to report great success against the French Air Force.

French HQ: Report for activities of January 1940: Sir, we have been engaged with the Luftwaffe for control of the air space over Strasbourg. We have denied the Germans control over Strasbourg and they have suffered such losses that they have not returned since January 9th.

Mediterranean Front: January 1940

Bulgarian HQ: Report for activities of January 1940Sir, we have engaged in an active defense of eastern Bulgaria. We have twice this month smashed the British attacks in to Ruse, one on the 6th and again on the 24th. We continue to strengthen our lines and we should have no problem holding the line. Our navy, which is currently with out a base engaged both the British January 7th and French Fleets on the 12th , successfully avoiding any major conflicts.

Italian HQ: Sir, we have won naval battles over the French on the 21st and over the British on the 25th. Our naval operations continue to be a success. Our allies in Ethopia even managed to repulse a British attack into Jimma on the 30th.

Ethiopian HQ: My God Sir, our army defeated the British this afternoon in Jimma. It won’t be long now and we can look to take Egypt.

French HQ: Sir, our naval activities in the Western Black Sea were a great success as we smashed a Bulgarian Fleet on the 12th. We had a successful recon mission in to the North Tyrrhenian Sea on the 21st, and we can report the Italian fleet is there in great numbers.

British HQ: Sir, our armies are not fairing very well sir in Bulgaria, we were twice repulsed in Ruse, once on the 6th and again on the 24th. We will continue to find a way through the Bulgarian army. Our forces were also repulsed on the 30th in Jimma, by the Ethopian army. The army also suffered a defeat in its attempt to capture Bardiyah on the 25th. The Royal Navy managed a success against the Bulgarian fleet on the 7th in the Western Black Sea.

Far East: January 1940

Japanese HQ: Sir, our air force continues to deny Soviet control of the air space over Mukden. This airal battle started on the 1st and continues even now. Our navy again defeated the Soviet fleet, this time in the West Sea of Japan on the 5th. Our armies won a battle in Mukden on the 5th but were later defeat and had to retreat on the 19th. Our armies also suffered defeats in Shunsen on the 6th, and again on the 23rd in both Linxi and Sinuiju. Our air force was successful in bombing forces in Shunsen on the 30th.

Soviet HQ: Comrade, our armies rule supreme again. We have advance in the following locations Shunsen on the 6th, Mukden on the 19th, Linxi on the 23rd as well as Sinuiju on the 23rd. We continue to drive the Japanese back. Our air force is also successfully defending Mukden and wearing down the Japanese air force in the area. Our navy reports yet another loss, this time in the West Sea of Japan on the 5th.

In CORE there is like a 1 in 50 chance that Haile Selassie accepts an Italian bribeto help maintain order in Ethiopia and be an Italian vassal. Historically the Italians did offer him such a deal but he refused and went on to make his famous speech to the League of Nations.

The War in February 1940

German HQ: The fuehrer has decided to join forces with Japan to free the Russians from Soviet terror. As of 0300 February 9th 1940 we are formally allied to Japan. We will need to commence immediate operations on the Eastern Front to support the Japanese armies. We will need to continue operations on West Front. The sooner we eliminate France the sooner those units can redeployed to the East Front to support our efforts against the Soviets.

Japanese HQ: The Emperor has decided that the German offer of an alliance and thus a second front for the Soviets would benefit our further aims to dominate all of Asia and the Pacific. As of 0300 February 9th 1940 we are formally allied with Germany. We now have to determine where to strike first. Soviets troops should be redeploying to the West to fight the Germans and thus we will have opportunities to take Soviet territory. We must also strike at English possessions as well as capture important oil fields in the Dutch East Indies.

Soviet HQ: Stalin has just informed me that the traitors in Germany have concluded an alliance with the deceitful Japanese. As of 0300 February 9th 1940 we are a war with Germany. We must move forces from the Far East to the German border quickly. Already Comrade Stalin is angry that we had no forces on the border with Germany.

British HQ: Gentleman, it would seem that the Germans and Japanese have concluded an alliance, thus as of 0300 February 9th we are at war with Japan. We must do our utmost duty to ensure the safety of our Far Eastern possessions. We must consider how best do disperse our forces. We are hard pressed at the moment with troops committed to France, Bulgaria, Egypt, Ethiopia, and now we must protect our Asian and Pacific holdings. We must do our best to hold every thing together, God Save the King.

West Front: February 1940

German HQ: Heil Hitler! We have pushed into Arlon on the 8th in Belgium and followed that up with an attack on Bruxelles on the 24th. The navy had a inconclusive fight with France in the North Sea on the 15th but did retreat to allow another attempt to move onto raiding allied shipping. The air force defeated the French on the 18th over Luxemburg.

Allied HQ: The Germans have advanced into a captured Arlon on the 8th and then Bruxelles on the 24th. The French air force took heavy casualties over Luxemburg on the 18th and then again on the 30th over Sedan. The French fleet defeated an attempt by the Germans to break into the north sea on the 15th. A combined British and Canadian fleet defeated the Germans in Skagerrak, hopefully forestalling an invasion of Norway.

Mediterranean Front: February 1940

Action in the Med started with yet another attempt by Britain to capture Ruse on from the Bulgarians. Reports indicate that the British took a pounding prior to retreating on the 9th with very little casualties caused. Not to be out done the British went back for a second helping and were similarly sent packing from Ruse on the 23rd. Italy had a good month defeating British war ships in the Straits of Sicily on the 18th and then defeating British troops in Al Quattara on the 25th, lastly French forces were routed out of Tripoli on the 30th bringing an end to the French Colonial forces offensive.

Eastern Front: February 1940
The war between Germany and the Soviets commenced on the 9th of February 1940. Given that neither side had many forces deployed along the border, with the Soviets having none. It took 3 days before and real hostilities commenced. The opening combats were between the air forces of the two nations, which dueled through February for control of the skies. Most of the air battles took place over Rezekne, neither side seemed able to maintain air superiority in this local. Germany captured the first territory by taking Rowne on the 21st. Hungary took Lowe on the 28th marking the only other change of territory.

The Far East: February 1940

The Soviet offensive in Korea continued with the capture of Taikyu on the 2nd. This was followed up by the capture of Dalian on the 13th, then Koshu on the 14th, then Fuzan on the 19th, and two successfully defenses of Mukden on the 20th and Vladivostok on the 19th and 20th. The Japanese forces hoping for some relief of Soviet hordes now that Germany had entered the fight decided to attak in China and captured Xinxiang on the 21st. The Japanese navy continued to dominate on the ocean defeating the Soviets in the Western Sea of Sapporo on the 23rd, then in the West Sea of Japan on the 24th. The Japanese air force seems to have gained control of most of the skies over the Far East as the Soviet air force redeployed to the West to deal with the German invasion.

Politically speaking the USA had taken a slow approach to entry into the conflict. But sensing that the world was quickly coming apart at the seems, it was deemed prudent to reinforce the Philippines with more aircraft and on March 1st they were sent to Manila. Also on the 1st mobilized the Philippine army. In a somewhat opposite view the US strengthened the embargos on export of war materials to other nations. Germany had bad news as partisans operating in the captured territory were already making their presence felt on German manpower and Soviet morale. Soviet politics to a big reverse as all the formerly purged officers were returned to active duty. Belgium became the second nation to formerly surrender, followed by Inner Mongolia as the third.

England again tried to capture more Bulgarian territory but as usual failed to take Ruse being forced to retreat on the 6th. Bulgarian forces were continuing to gain confidence and once again sent the British packing out of Ruse on the 24th. The British had considerably more luck against the Italians as they won three naval battles on the 24th in the Gulf of Sidira, then on the 27th off the Coast of Libya and again on the 30th off the Coast of Libya. The British army captured Bardiyah on the 26th followed by Kismayo on the 29th and had already captured Siracusa on the 18th. Italy did have some relief as the French colonial forces were again forced to retreat from Tripoli on the 30th.

Japan opened March with a major bombing campaign of British Indian possession. First Mandalay was hit on the 1st, then on the 4th, and then on the 6th and the 7th. British reports from Mandalay indicate that no damage of significance was caused. Bassein was bombed on the 2nd, then the 3rd and again on the 5th. Once more reports indicated that no real damage was done. Infact of all the bombing done by Japan only at Patna and Rampur Boalia was any damaged caused. The Japanese strategic bombing efforts left much to be desired. The Soviet offensive continued forward with the capture of Heijo on the 4th, then Hohhot on the 8th, followed lastly by Zhangjiakou on the 23rd. Soviet forces seemed hardly dimished in numbers and it looked as if the Soviets were planning to eliminate the Japanese first before returning forces to the Western Front. The only Japanese success against the Soviets this month occurred in Petropavlovsk-Kamtjatskij were a Soviet attack was repulsed. Japan also won a battle against China in Hengyang. On the 26th New Zealand forces occupied the Caroline Islands and then were prompted defeated at sea the same day by Japan. Japan also managed to occupy Khota Baru and Rach Gia unopposed.

The small numbers of Soviet forces were simply not sufficient to stop the German advance.
