The Duke of Connacht, Ruaidri MacAed Ua Conchobair, creates himself first King of all Ireland. A lifetime of battle, murder, and fear mongering have earned him not only the divine right to be regent, but also the nom de guerre Kinga Ruaidri I "the Cruel" of Ireland. The Irish King gained a vast demesne by the forceful acquisition of rival land using every tool at his disposal: fabricating claims , usurping titles as he pleased, and pressing the claims of other nobles. These other nobles, unfortunately for them, quickly found that Ruaidri used them as pawns -he used his political clout and sizable military to play their newly gotten gains into his royal hands.

After secretly murdering his first wife, and her issues, due to their ineffectiveness rulers, Ruaidri remarried almost instantly. He sired a slew of children thereafter, the first son sired of this new line proved to be brilliant, and would make a fitting heir for the King. Safe in title, power, and with a competent heir, the royal court expected affairs would wind down while the King made peace with god. After all, the king was 80 years of age, and a life filled with such turmoil and stress deserved some respite.

But, as the court would come to find out, their king would not go quietly. The power-drunk, senile, lecherous old man had grown tiered the Queen consort. Perhaps sensing the end is near, and knowing he has the antipope to absolve him of his sins, the King seduces his own granddaughter.

Suddenly the King, who became slothful in his old age, returned to new life!

And interestingly enough, this particular granddaughter was betrothed to a boy who is second in line to the French throne. The current Queen of France also happens to be her older sister. Further proof of the King's power trip fueled lechery:

As if born again, the King sets off to take the only remaining independent province in Nothern Ireland.

Although victory is his, he cannot evade the black hand for very much longer.

At an unheard of 83 years of age(for the time), King Ruaidri I "the Crule" of Ireland, passes away. Many thought of him as a tyrant. Many also believed him to be a wizard, or in-league with the devil due to the power he wielded, and the advanced age he attained. His son, Ruaidri II, doesn't waste his time on such matters... He is pleased to finally sit on the throne, and to continue his father's unification of the island.

Just an interesting chain of events for someone in such an advanced age. What an awesome game :D

The murders, usurpations and general violence in carving out a domain for himself don't appear that unusual, from the few AARs I've sampled so far. Territorial conquest, through means fair or foul, seem common. Now, the king's other 'conquest', at the ripe old age of 80 (and with a rather perverted sense of "keeping things in the family")... That I hadn't seen yet. Nor did I expect to see it (or, come to think of it, want to see it. Best not to let the mind dwell on it. Yergh!).

Excellent little AAR, thanks for writing it up. :)

He would have lasted longer with clean living. In my game Harald Hardrada, ally of his grandson the King of Ireland hailing from Munster, is stilll going strong at 88.
