The N. German Federation that Wasn't?

Not sure if this is a bug or not.

I am playing 1.03 as France. It is the 1870's and I have recently won a war against Prussia triggered by the "Adventure in Belgium" event.

I get two event messages talking about the fulfillment of Napoleonic ambitions. The first one says that the "South German Culture is no longer accepted".

The second one says "N. German Federation is made a satellite".

But wait, the N. German Federation never formed! I am not sure how it forms but I just rec'd an event that should make them my satellite.

Should I have not received this message (a bug) because the Federation did not form?

Should the Federation have formed as a result of all the northern German minors losing the Franco-Prussian war, or some similar reason, and THEN they should have become my satellite?

I know that sometimes events fire for one nation but are delayed for another...but it has been a year or two since this satellite-event was announced and so far there have been no events for Prussia or the German minors that seem to relate to this.

Any ideas?

Ok...

If Prussia wins the war over leadership in Germany against Austria, then a North German Confederation can form, and it will become a satellite of Prussia. If, following that, France defeats Prussia in the Franco-Prussian War, an event called the "Fall of Prussia" will fire, causing, well, the fall of Prussia. Among the several effects of this event is that the North German Confederation becomes a satellite of France.I don't know why you got the event firing, though, because the NGF doesn't exist.

I'll go back in the log and look for Prussian and Austrian events, if that's helpful.

I was pretty confused. Happy to get a satellite composed of former enemies, which would also stunt the growth of my closet rival, but confused when there wasn't any NGF to be found and one didn't form.

I did end up annexing a few provinces, though most were Southern German, not Northern (Bavaria was allied with Prussia at the time of the war). Don't know if that would affect anything or not. Maybe I'll open up the events file and take a peek?

Certainly. Go through the events. It's fun. But unless the NGF forms through the defeat of Austria, and then you defeat Prussia, the NGF won't become your satellite.

NB: The NGF can also form through Prussia accepting the proposal of the Frankfurt Assembly, but since this kills off the Franco-Prussian War event, you can't get the NGF to be your satellite anymore.

Okay, still not sure why I got the event saying the NGF was my satellite, but here's what I found in the History Log. I've tried to include anything that might be relevant.

And here's what happened from the end of the war until the time the events fired. I've left out the various peace agreements with the German minors, etc. This picks up with the surrender of Prussia.

The Fall of Prussia was were I was "awarded" the satellite that didn't exist.

So what do you think? A bug? Or legit, but worthless, event?

Well, I wouldn't call it a worthless event. The French version of the "Fall of prussia" (there's a different Austrian version) leads really to the downfall of prussia. They get revolts in all their western territories, and if they have the NGF as a satellite, which happens if the zollverein forms, it'll become yours. It probably shouldn't be firing for you since the NGF doesn't exist, but it can't hurt.

No, no, you misunderstand me.

I don't mean that the "Fall of Prussia" event series (with all of its effects for Prussia) is worthless to France, I mean that if the NGF doesn't exist then isn't the Event Message I get as France (with no decision for me to make, only that the NGF becomes my satellite) worthless?

Or perhaps, a better way to say it is that "Should there be a different message, one you get if the NGF exists, and one you get if they do not?"

The way that it happened was awfully confusing and the message in the pop-up box doesn't make any sense. That's why I was wondering if it was a bug - because I shouldn't get an event saying a nonexistant nation becomes a satellite.

Of course, in the grand scheme of things, this is pretty minor. As opposed to the Emancipation Proclamation not firing if the USA wins the CW too quickly or other things I've read about, I don't think the game will be any poorer if this isn't fixed.
