So far in my brief EU career I've been an explorer/colonist with Portugal, with only brief wars against single opponents (Morocco, Aztecs, Spain).

I thought I'd try something different, and played Denmark.
For my first militaristic goal I wanted to take the Hanseatic League.

I saved the game just before attacking (for a reason, I haven't quite figured out yet military strategy, so this really was 'practice').

My allies were Russia, Saxony, Hessen, and Pstov.
Twas us vs HL, Brandenburg, Teutonic Knights (+ Portugal and Venice, though they did not take part).

I won the first attempt. The HL ceded a province + cash to me, while the Hessens gained one from Brandenburg, war over for everyone.

I reloaded to try a different strategy (to study the affect of sieges, supply lines + cover).

Second time around, things did go better. Fewer losses, more provinces gained. During the war however, Pstov sued for peace against the Order, Saxony bowed against Brandenburg. I ended up taking 2 provinces from the HL, the Hessens one (they deserved it, as they fought really well).

However, after the HL conceded, Brandenburg and the Teutonic League fought on! Plus the Saxons were fighting the HL, and the Russians and Teutonic Order were still going at it (niether sign gaining very much at all).

My weary Dane troops march into Brandenburg's capitol, and again with help from the Hessens we capture it. By this time the war has gone on for three years. I sued for peace, and gave the Hessens a province from Brandenburg. But the Order was still at war with me and the Russians, and the Saxons were still fighting the HL.

What the heck happened?
I tried to save but alas the game froze (one of the few times I've had trouble).

You must have made a seperate peace.

I don't trust that load game button. Say I'm playing a GC with Portugal and I get tired with it and decide to load some other game (perhaps a different scenario). It goes through all the motions but it doesn't really load the game I wanted it load! It's back to Portugal in the GC and I think it's in some odd state too. I then try a third time to load and the game crashes while loading (it never crashes otherwise). Unfortunately, I think the only safe way to load a game is to first surrender and then go back in.

More specifically, it appears (it's getting late so can't verify) that if you're playing say Russia in a game and you then load a game where you had been playing Austria that the game will load up but you'll be playing Russia instead of Austria! Because of this, I really don't trust the Load Game option.

Yes, whenever you start playing a game and then load a saved game, you are placed in control of the country that you were initially playing, regardless of which country you had been playing in the saved game (unless this has been changed in recent patches).

Fritz,
Who was the alliance leader of your opponents in the war (I assume that you were leader for your side)? If you make peace with the alliance leader, then that peace is effective for all countries you are at war with, but a peace with a country that isn't the leader is a peace only with that country, the others will fight on. Thus, in your game the Order must have been the alliance leader during the war.

Thanks for the feedback.

I assume it was Portugal who led the opponent alliance (they are listed first).

What I don't understand is why the first time everyone quit, but the next two times (played the war again for a third time) it didn't. It would appear in both the case I described above and in the third case -- both times when the Order continued to fight -- they were the alliance leader.

There's tons of stuff I'm not getting about the military aspect of the game yet . . .but that's another post for another day (and yup I've read the faqs :)
